DPTO MOVIE NIGHT – The DPTO wishes to thank all the members of our community who supported the tradional Movie Night last Friday. The event was well attended and the DPTO and Discovery parents made it a great success for our students.
INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PICTURES FOR THE YEARBOOK – Individual student and class pictures (as well as individual teacher pictures) will be taken this Tuesday, March 6, Wednesday, March 7 and Thursday, March 8. Please see the schedule below. Retakes, special teachers, an all-school picture will be taken on Thursday, March 8, and special group pictures (i.e. Drama Club, Math Olympics) will be taken on Wednesday, March 15. Sponsors of these groups should make sure the students are informed.

WEDNESDAY IN-SERVICE TOPICS – Last Wednesday afternoon, the in-service for teachers focused on use of documents in teaching critical thinking skills. We began with a presentation by Ms. Kristen Fink, Middle and High School Social Studies teacher, on Document-Based Questions (DBQ’s). She shared with the teachers how they can develop lessons around primary and secondary source documents to develop higher order thinking skills, such as synthesizing and analyzing. She included examples of lessons she has developed and used with her students, including instruction sheets and rubrics. DBQ’s are excellent preparation for the MAP, PSAT and SAT, as well as for Advanced Placement (AP) exams. Since we believe that Pre-AP begins in Kindergarten, this information was relevant for all of our teachers. Even Kindergarten teachers can use the DBQ’s with their students!
Following the presentation on DBQ’s, the teaching faculty was given a refresher course on the resources and procedures in the Library by Mr. Carlos Echeverria, Librarian. Teachers were then given a scavenger hunt form to use in browsing through the Library—with a focus on discovering resources that they did not know were there and that they will use with their classes—including magazines, books, reference materials, etc. Teachers were also shown how they can access the Library’s electronic database from the computer in their classrooms or in the teachers’ workroom to search for books and resources, and to place them on hold for their classes.
We encourage parents to browse in the Library whenever it is convenient for them. Parents can check out books, as well as students!
DISMISSAL PROCEDURES- To facilitate a safe transfer of our students at the end of the school day, at 3:00 p.m., students are brought to the dismissal area by their teachers. The students in Grades K-5 sit on the bleachers with their classes and wait for their ride. Their teachers will stand in the gym facing the students and the parking lot, watch for each child's car, and have the child ready so the car has a minimal wait. The students in Grades 6-12 gather under the arches to wait for their rides or go to their bus. When the car arrives, they are to get in the car and go home.
Once students have arrived in the dismissal area (either under the arches or in the bleacher area), they are not allowed to go back downstairs or into the office area. At 3:15 p.m., all students who have not been picked up by their parents or drivers will go to the Reception area to wait for their rides.
We will NOT process permission slips for students to go home with another student at 3:00 p.m. If parents want their child to go home with another parent, they must give that information to Carolina, Receptionist, in advance--preferably by noon. Any permission requested after 2:30 p.m. will not be granted unless there is a clear emergency, and Carolina does not have the authority to grant that permission. It must be received from an administrator (Ms. Cristiana, Ms. Gloria, Ms. Ivonne, or Ms. Giles).

DRESS CODE - We would appreciate parents’ help in making sure the students are dressed appropriate for school. The guidelines are in the Parent/Student Handbook. If you have any questions, please contact one of the Administrators.
STUDENTS WHO ARE LEAVING – If you already know that you will not be here for the 2012-2013 school year, please contact Carolina, Receptionist, as soon as possible and fill out the necessary forms. If we have the information in advance, there will not be delays at the end of the year in processing documents.
ARRIVAL TO SCHOOL - We would like to remind all parents and students that the first bell rings at 7:55 am. The second bell rings at 8:00 am. By this time, all students should be in their classrooms ready for instructions. If your child is late, he/she misses important information and disrupts the rest of his classmates. Students that are arriving late to school constantly will not be allowed to the first class period in the Middle and High School.
JUNIORS TO CAYOS COCHINOS – Our Junior class of 2012 will visit Cayos Cochinos during the month of March. We will visit and work with the public school of Cayo Mayor, which suffers of poor resources and scarcity. As responsible citizens we are determined to provide these students with the necessary materials. For this reason, we are requesting your donations of the following school materials (new or used): Markers, pencils, crayons, notebooks, colors, sharpeners, etc. Thank you for your generosity. We will be collecting the materials until March 20th. Junior Class 2012.

TEMAS PUESTOS EN PRACTICA DEL MIERCOLES – La tarde del miércoles pasado, la puesta en practica de los maestros se enfoco en el uso de documentos de la enseñanza de habilidades para pensamiento practico. Comenzamos con una presentación por Ms. Kristen Fink, Maestra de Estudios Sociales de Secundaria, con Documentos Basados en Preguntas (DBQ´s, ingles). Ella compartió con los maestros como pueden desarrollar lecciones usando la fuente de documentos para desarrollar habilidades de pensamiento en mayor escala, como resumiendo y analizando. Incluyo ejemplos de lecciones que tiene que desarrollar y usar con sus alumnos, incluyendo hojas de instrucciones y acciones. DBQ´s son una excelente preparación para el MAP, PSAT y SAT, así como para exámenes de Colocación Avanzada (AP). Ya que creemos que Pre-AP comienza en Kinder, esta información fue importante para todos nuestros maestros. Hasta los maestros de Kinder pueden usar el DBQ´s con sus alumnos!
A continuación de la presentación de DBQ´s, la facultad docente recibió un curso refrescante acerca de los recursos y procedimientos en la Biblioteca por Mr. Carlos Echeverria, bibliotecario. Les fue dado a los maestros un formulario de búsqueda para usar en la biblioteca- con enfoque en descubrir los recursos que no sabían adonde estaban y que usaran en sus aulas- incluyendo revistas, libros, materiales de referencia, etc. Se les enseño también a los maestros como pueden tener acceso a la base de datos electrónica de la biblioteca desde la computadora de sus aulas o en el aula de trabajo de maestros para buscar libros y recursos, y solicitarlos para sus clases.
Animamos a los padres a buscar en la Biblioteca cuando les sea conveniente. Los padres pueden sacar libros, así como los alumnos!
PROCEDIMIENTO DE SALIDA - Para proveer un traslado seguro de nuestros alumnos al final del día escolar, a las 3:00 p.m., los alumnos son traídos a el área de salida por los maestros. Los alumnos de Kinder a 5 grado se sientan en las graderías con sus clases y esperan su transporte. Los maestros estarán de pie en el gimnasio viendo a los alumnos y al estacionamiento, atentos al carro del niño, y teniéndolo listo para que el vehículo espere el menor tiempo posible. Los alumnos de 6 a 12 se reúnen debajo de los arcos para esperar su transporte o irse en el bus. Cuando el carro llegue, deben subirse e irse a casa.
Una vez que los alumnos lleguen al area de salida (ya sea debajo de los arcos o en las graderías), no les es permitido regresar abajo o ir al area de la oficina. A las 3:15 p.m., todos los alumnos que no son recogidos por sus padres o conductores se iran al area de recepción a esperar.
NO daremos pases de salida a los alumnos que se van a casa con otro alumno a las 3:00 p.m. Si los padres desean que sus hijos vayan a casa con otro padre, deben dar la información a Carolina, Recepcionista, por adelantado—preferiblemente antes del mediodía. Cualquier permiso solicitado después de las 2:30 p.m. no será concedido a menos que este sea una clara emergencia, y Carolina no tiene la autoridad de conceder ese permiso. Debe ser recibido de un coordinador (Ms. Cristiana, Ms. Gloria, Ms. Ivonne o Ms. Giles).

CODIGO DE VESTIR – Apreciaríamos la ayuda de los padres en asegurarse que los alumnos estén vestidos apropiadamente en la escuela. Los lineamientos están en el Manual de Padres/Alumnos. Si tienen alguna consulta, consulte a alguno de los Administradores.
ALUMNOS QUE SE VAN - Si usted sabe que no estará con nosotros para el año escolar 2012-2013, favor comuníquese con Carolina, Recepcionista, tan pronto como sea posible y llene los formularios necesarios. Si tenemos la información por adelantado no habrán retrasos en el proceso de documentos al final del año.
LLEGADA A LA ESCUELA – Nos gustaría recordar a los padres y alumnos que la primera campana suena a las 7:55 a.m. La segunda campana suena a las 8:00 a.m. Para entonces, todos los alumnos deben estar en las aulas listos para instrucciones. Si su hijo(a) llega tarde, pierde información importante e interrumpe el resto de sus compañeros. No se les permitirá entrar al primer periodo de clases a los alumnos de Secundaria que lleguen tarde constantemente.
VIAJE DE JUNIORS A CAYOS COCHINOS – Nuestra clase de Juniors de 2012 estará visitando Cayos Cochinos durante el mes de marzo. Visitaremos y trabajaremos con la escuela pública de Cayo Mayor, que sufre de escasos recursos y pobreza. Como ciudadanos responsables estamos determinados a proveer a esos alumnos con los materiales necesarios. Por esta razón, estamos solicitando sus donaciones de los siguientes materiales (nuevos o usados): marcadores, lápices, crayones, libretas, lápices de colores, sacapuntas, etc. Gracias por su generosidad. Recogeremos los materiales hasta el 20 de marzo. Clase de Juniors 2012.
