YEAR! Once again we would like to welcome our parents and students to a
wonderful school year! We are delighted to have you be a part of our Discovery
School community, and we thank you for entrusting your child’s education to us.
DISCOVERY SCHOOL TEACHERS – Our teachers
have worked very hard preparing their classrooms and lesson plans for our
students. Their professionalism, dedication and hard work have paid off, and
our students and parents have had a great beginning of the school year. The school is grateful for all of our
teacher’ ‘continuous enthusiasm and pursuit of excellence.
WELCOME TO OUR NEW TEACHERS! Once again we
would like to welcome Mr. Andrew Dureya (2B), Ms. Dariela Velasquez (3B), Ms.
Diane Howard (4B), Ms. Ashley Pileika (5A), Mr. Cesar Martinez (MS and HS) and
Ms. Marilis Zambrana Beckmann (School Counselor) to our teaching staff. Discovery School is
fortunate that you have joined our school family.
TEACHERS’ TRAINING - In preparation for this school year, and
following the guidelines and needs of adopting the Common Core Standards in
Language Arts, the school hired a consultant who worked with our teachers in
three different trainings during the first week of August: 6+1 Writing Traits Assessment,
Differentiation in the Classroom and 4 Blocks of Literacy. If you would like to
know more about what this means for your child’s education, please talk to your
child’s teachers. They are eagerly incorporating these innovations in the
delivery of the curriculum.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY – Discovery School
parents are invited to attend the General Assembly that will take place on Saturday, August 24 from 9:00 to
11:00 a.m. in the School Cafeteria. Important matters such as a
suggested revision to our school calendar, budget information, an update on the
status of the Concrete Plant, and school-wide implications of MAP data will be
addressed. YOUR ATTENDANCE IS CRUCIAL—we need a quorum of 1/3 of our parents
(55 parents) for the meeting to be considered a legal meeting of our school
Association. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending. Believe and Achieve Sports will be at the
school to work with the children while the parents are attending the meeting.
DPTO EVENT – Parents’ and Teachers’ Night Out!
Mark your Calendars
The Discovery Parent Teacher Organization will host an informal get-together
for parents and teachers (especially for those new to the school) next Friday,
August 16 at Ibiza Restaurant in Col. San Ignacio, from 7:30 p.m.
onwards. Ten percent (10%) of the proceeds
will be donated to the school! Invitation and further details will be
sent by the DPTO via email next week. We hope all our parents and teachers will
be able to join us!
AFTER-SCHOOL SPORTS PROGRAM – Mr. Eric Hamm with Believe and Achieve Sports
will begin activities on Tuesday afternoon at 3:15 p.m. for those students who
have signed up. If you have not had a chance to sign up yet, please contact Ms.
Paola Mena, Administrative Assistant, at dsoffice@discoveryschool.edu.hn,
2221-7790 or 9950-66924 to let us know of your interest.
BUS EXPECTATIONS AND CONSEQUENCES: If your students
ride the school bus, please remind them of the expectations and consequences,
as follows:
- Students are expected to
enter the bus, sit down,
buckle the seatbelt, and remain seated. To safeguard the students,
they are not allowed to leave the bus once they have gotten on.
- Students need to remain in their seats and use
seatbelts for the entire trip. They are not to be standing until the
bus comes to a complete stop at their own house.
- Students should keep their arms and legs
inside the bus at all
times, and not open or close the windows unless instructed to do so by the
nanny
- Shouting is not allowed on the bus. Students need
to speak using a quiet
'indoor' voice and talk
only with the student seated beside them. It is distracting for the bus
driver when the students become too loud, and it creates an unsafe
condition on the bus
- Students are expected to treat other students, the bus
nanny, and the driver with respect. Name-calling,
foul language, or obscene gestures, shoving, kicking, and teasing are not
allowed on the bus.
- Students should not
throw garbage, papers, or any other objects in or outside of the bus
- No food or drink is allowed on the bus
Consequences:
- First Offense:
Warning and reminder of the rules
- Second Offense: Conference
with Transportation Supervisor, and parents notified
- Third Offense: Loss
of bus privileges for one to three days; parents notified; notation in
student's file
- Fourth Offense: Loss of bus
privileges for 10 days up to the remainder of the school year; parents
notified; notation in student's file
ENROLLMENT DRIVE: Last year's Enrollment Drive brought in 14
new students to the school and helped account for the 13% increase in
enrollment that we experienced last year. The Board of Directors elected last
year to repeat the Enrollment Drive again for the 2013-2014 school year, and
the term will expire soon.
1. PERIOD
OF THE ENROLLMENT DRIVE: This
opportunity is available until August 31, 2013, and is not retroactive.
2.
CONDITIONS:
A. Discovery Parent must personally introduce
a potential new student and parents to Ms. Giles at the beginning of the
admission process (this must be someone who has not already requested
information on admission)
B. The school will follow the usual
admission process in determining whether the student will be admitted
C. The cash benefit will apply only if the
new student is actually admitted for the 2013-2014 school year.
3. CASH
BENEFIT FOR DISCOVERY SCHOOL PARENTS AND TEACHERS:
During the enrollment drive period, for each new
student that a family introduces to Ms. Giles and who is thereafter admitted
after meeting all of our admission requirements, the sponsoring parent or
teacher will receive a cash bonus in the amount of 5% of the tuition
(not capital fee) that the new student actually pays during the 2013-2014
school year.
4.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: All new
students are required to meet the admission requirements that are already
established. If a student applies and is not admitted, no bonus will be paid.
5.
ORGANIZATIONS: This offer applies
to individuals who pay their own tuition and does not apply to organizations.
6.
UNFORESEEN COMPLICATIONS: The
Board reserves the right to discontinue the Enrollment Drive at any time if
there are any unforeseen complications for the school.
**NOTE: If a
class is or becomes full, Discovery School reserves the right to put a new
applicant on a waiting list. In that case, the bonus would not be paid unless
the child is admitted during the 2013-2014 school year.

INSTRUCCIÓN DE MAESTROS – Como preparación para este año escolar, y siguiendo
los lineamientos y necesidades de adoptar los Estándares Generales Comunes en
Lenguaje y Literatura, la escuela contrató a una consultora quien trabajo en
con los maestros en tres diferentes capacitaciones durante la primera semana de
agosto: 6+1 Writing Traits Assessment, Differentiation in the Classroom y 4
Blocks of Literacy. Si le gustaria saber más sobre lo que esto significa para la educación de sus hijos, por favor
hable con los maestros de sus hijos. Ellos están introduciendo estas

ASAMBLEA GENERAL – Los padres de la Escuela Discovery están invitados a asistir a la
Asamblea General que se llevará a cabo el
día sábado 24 de agosto de 9:00 a 11:00 a.m. en la Cafeteria de la
Escuela. Asuntos importantes como la revisión del calendario escolar, información
de presupuesto, actualización al estatus en el caso de la Planta de Concreto,
se hablará sobre las implicaciones generales que da la informacion de las
pruebas MAP. SU ASISTENCIA ES CRUCIAL –necesitamos quórum de 1/3 de los padres
(55 padres) para que la reunión sea considerada legal para la Asociación de la
escuela. Por favor marquen en sus agendas para que planifique asistir. La
organización deportiva “Créalo y Lógrelo” estará en la escuela para trabajar
con los niños mientras los padres asisten a la reunión.
EVENTO DEL DPTO – Noche de Padres y Maestros! Marquen en sus agendas que la Organización de
Padres y Maestros de Discovery organizará una reunión informal para padres y
maestros (especialmente aquellos que son nuevos en la escuela) el próximo viernes
16 de agosto en el Restaurante
Ibiza en la Colonia San Ignacio, desde las 7:30 p.m. El diez por
ciento (10%) de las ganancias serán donadas a la escuela! Una invitación y más
detalles serán enviados por el DPTO por correo electrónico la próxima semana.

PROGRAMA DE ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES - El Sr. Eric
Hamm de la Organización Deportiva “Créalo
y Lógrelo” comenzará actividades el martes en la tarde a las 3:15 p.m. para
aquellos alumnos que se han registrado. Si usted todavía no se ha registrado,
por favor comuníquese con Ms. Paola Mena, Asistente Administrativa, a dsoffice@discoveryschool.edu.hn,
2221-7790 o 9950-6924 para informarnos de su interés.
LINEAMIENTOS Y CONSECUENCIAS DEL BUS: Si su hijo utiliza el bus, por favor recuérdele los
lineamientos y consecuencias que son los siguientes:
- Se espera que los alumnos entren al bus, se sienten, abrochen su cinturón y permanezcan sentados. Para
asegurar a los alumnos, no se les permite bajarse una vez que hayan
abordado.
- Los alumnos necesitan permanecer
en sus asientos y usar su cinturón todo el camino. No deben pararse
hasta que el bus se detenga por completo en su casa.
- Los alumnos deben mantener sus brazos y piernas adentro del bus
en todo momento, y no abrir o cerrar las ventanas a menos que sea indicado
por la niñera.
- Gritar en el bus no está permitido. Los alumnos necesitan utilizar su “voz de interiores” (calmada) y
hablarle solamente al alumno que está sentado a su lado. El conductor del
bus se distrae cuando los alumnos hacen mucho ruido, y crea un ambiente
inseguro en el bus.
- Se espera que los alumnos se traten
mutuamente, a la niñera y al conductor con respeto. No están permitidos
los insultos, lenguaje grosero, o gestos inadecuados, empujones, pateadas,
y molestarse en el bus.
- Los alumnos no deben botar
basura, papeles, o cualquier otro objeto adentro o afuera del bus.
- No es permitido ir con comidas
o bebidas en el bus.
Consecuencias:
- Primera ofensa: Advertencia y recordatorio de las reglas
- Segunda ofensa: Reunión
con el Supervisor de Transporte, y notificación a los padres
- Tercera ofensa: Perdida de privilegios de bus por tres días;
notificación a los padres; nota en el expediente del alumno
- Cuarta Ofensa: Perdida de privilegios de bus por 10 días hasta
el final del año escolar; notificación a los padres; nota en el expediente
del alumno.
CAMPAÑA DE MATRICULA: La Campaña de Matricula del año pasado trajo 14 nuevos
alumnos a la escuela y ayudo con el conteo con un 13% de incremento en la
matricula que hemos experimentado este año. La Junta Directiva ha decidido
repetir la Campaña de Matricula para el año escolar 2013-2014, y los términos
expirarán pronto.
- PERIODO DE LA CAMPAÑA DE MATRICULA: Esta oportunidad es desde
el 16 de abril hasta el 31 de agosto del 2013, y no es retroactivo.
- CONDICIONES:
A.
El padre de
Discovery debe presentar personalmente al nuevo alumno potencial y los
padres a Ms. Giles al comienzo de proceso de admisión (estos deben ser
personas que no han solicitado información de admisión)
B.
La escuela
seguirá el proceso de admisión acostumbrado para determinar si el alumno
es admitido
C.
El beneficio en efectivo aplicará solamente si el
nuevo alumno es realmente aceptado en el año escolar 2013-2014.
- EL BENEFICIO EN EFECTIVO PARA LOS PADRES Y MAESTROS DE DISCOVERY:
Durante
el periodo de matrícula, por cada nuevo alumno que una familia presente a Ms.
Giles y por consecuencia es admitido después de reunir todos los requisitos de
admisión, el padre o maestro que lo apadrino recibirá un bono en efectivo
del 5% de la colegiatura (no el fondo de inversión) que el nuevo alumno pague durante el año
escolar 2013-2014.
- REQUISITOS DE ADMISION: Se requiere de todos los nuevos alumnos
cumplir con los requisitos de admisión que ya están establecidos. Si un
alumno aplica y no es admitido, no se pagará el bono.
- ORGANIZACIONES: Esta oferta solo aplica a individuos que pagan su
propia colegiatura y no aplica a organizaciones.
- COMPLICACIONES IMPREVISTAS: La Junta se reserva el derecho a
descontinuar la Campaña de Matricula en cualquier momento si se presentan
complicaciones inesperadas para la escuela.
**NOTA: Si un grado se llena,
la Escuela Discovery se reserva el derecho de poner al nuevo aplicante en lista
de espera. En tal caso, el bono no será efectivo a menos que el alumno sea
admitido durante el año escolar 2013-2014.
