PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT – The school
recognizes and appreciates our teachers’ enthusiasm and hard work during Ms.
Fenton’s visit last week. Throughout the week, groups of teachers worked on the
following:

Language Arts Common
Core Standards
·
Four Blocks Literacy
Program (Grades 1-3)
·
Cooperative Learning
·
Authentic Assessment
·
Literature Circles (Grades
4-12)
These are areas that teachers will focus on throughout
the remainder of the school year, as we adopt the Language Arts Common Core
Curriculum.
In alignment with our 5-Year Curriculum Review Cycle,
we will also spend this year reviewing our current Math Curriculum and
resources, discussing the Common Core Math Curriculum, and writing our Math
standards for Nursery through Grade 12. Those new Math standards will be
implemented during the 2014-2015 school year.
During the week, the Curriculum Coordinators developed
an Action Plan for the reminder of the school year, which will allow training
and structure for implementing the Language Arts Common Core Curriculum and
writing the Math Common Core Curriculum during this school year
At Saturday’s Board training, Ms. Fenton and Ms. Giles
briefed the Board on what the school is doing to implement the Common Core and
bring our school into further alignment with the Mission and Vision of
Discovery School. The Board expressed their appreciation for our outstanding
faculty and recognition of the extra effort and planning that this will entail.
LITERACY PROGRAM IN GRADES 1-3 – Beginning with the second quarter, the schedule for Grades 1-3 are
being rearranged slightly to allow those grade levels to have an uninterrupted
2-period block for Language Arts and implementation of the Four Blocks Literacy
Program first thing in the morning. Teachers start instruction promptly at 8:00
a.m., and it is very important for our students to be settled in the classroom
before that time. We would like to ask our parents to make an extra effort
to make sure their children arrive at school by 7:50 a.m. at the latest.
This will enable the children to greet their friends, put their lunch boxes and
backpacks away, and be ready for instruction by 8:00 a.m. Thanks in advance for
your help.
In keeping with the Discovery School philosophy, the
children will follow a variety of activities and learning strategies that will
keep them engaged and interested in what they are learning throughout the
2-period literacy block. The Four Blocks program includes these four areas:
- Working With Words (Phonics, Spelling, Vocabulary, etc.)
- Guided Reading
- Self-Selected Reading
- Writing
MAP FALL TESTING SESSION – This is the
second week of our first MAP testing session. We appreciate your cooperation in
making sure our students are in school on time.

DONATIONS NEEDED: “Ya Tengo Donde
Escribir” is an organization aiming to help children from public
schools that cannot afford notebooks. In order to help, the organization makes
notebooks out of cereal boxes and pages from used notebooks. They are now
collecting cereal boxes until November 20, and we encourage our students and
teachers to bring cereal boxes from their homes. At the end of the contest, the
grade that brought the most boxes will be awarded a pizza party or ice cream
party! Please help us help those in need!

DESARROLLO
PROFESIONAL - La escuela reconoce y agradece el entusiasmo
de nuestros maestros así como el arduo trabajo durante la visita de Ms. Fenton
la semana pasada. Durante la semana, grupos de maestros trabajaron en lo siguiente:
· Estándares de Currículo
General de Lenguaje y Literatura
· Programa Literario de
Cuatro Bloques (de 1-3 grados)
· Aprendizaje
Cooperativo
· Evaluación Autentica
· Círculos Literarios
(de 4-12 grados)
Estas son las áreas que los maestros se
enfocarán durante el resto del año escolar, mientras implementamos el Currículo
General Común de Lenguaje y Literatura.
Tal como lo estipula nuestro Ciclo de Revisión de Currículo de 5 años,
también este año estaremos revisando el actual Currículo y los recursos de Matemáticas,
discutiendo el Currículo General Común de Matemáticas, y escribiendo los
estándares de Matemáticas para Nursery hasta 12vo grado. Estos estándares
nuevos de Matemáticas estarán implementándose durante el año escolar 2014-2015.
Durante esta semana, los Coordinadores de Currículo
desarrollaron un plan de trabajo para el resto del año escolar, que permitirá capacitaciones
y estructura para la implementación del Currículo
General Común de Lenguaje, y la elaboración del Currículo de Matemáticas
durante el presente año escolar.
En la capacitación de la Junta del día
sábado, Ms. Fenton y Ms. Giles informaron a la Junta en lo que la escuela está
haciendo para la implementación del Currículo General y llevar a nuestra
escuela más cerca al lineamiento establecido en la Misión y Visión de la
Escuela Discovery. La Junta expresó su agradecimiento por nuestros excelentes docentes
y reconocimiento por el esfuerzo y planificación extra que esto implica.
PROGRAMA
LITERARIO EN GRADOS DE 1-3 – Empezando el segundo trimestre, los
horarios de 1 – 3 grado está siendo acomodado para permitirle a estos grados
tener un bloque de 2 periodos ininterrumpidos
para Lenguaje y la implementación del Programa Literario de Cuatro Bloques en
las primeras hora de la mañana. Los maestros comienzan la instrucción a las
8:00 a.m. en punto, y es muy importante que los alumnos estén listos en sus
aulas antes de esa hora. Les solicitamos a nuestros padres que hagan un
esfuerzo extra para asegurarse que sus hijos lleguen a la escuela antes de las
7:50 a.m. por tarde. Esto permitirá a los niños saludar a sus amigos,
guardar sus loncheras y mochilas, y estar listos para la instrucción a las 8:00
a.m. Agradecemos de antemano su colaboración.
Siguiendo la filosofía de la Escuela Discovery,
los alumnos realizaran una variedad de actividades y estrategias de aprendizaje
que les mantendrá comprometidos e interesados en lo que están aprendiendo durante los dos
periodos del bloque literario. El Programa Literario de Cuatro Bloques incluye
lo siguiente:

NECESITAN DONACIONES: “Ya Tengo Donde Escribir” es una organización enfocada en ayudar a los
niños de escuelas públicas que no pueden comprar cuadernos. Para ayudarles, la
organización hace cuadernos de cajas de cereal y paginas de cuadernos usados. Ellos
están recolectando cajas de cereal hasta el 20 de noviembre, y animamos a
nuestros alumnos y maestros a traer las cajas de cereales de casa. Al final de
la competencia, el grado que haya recolectado mas cajas de cereal será recompensado
con una fiesta de pizza o fiesta de helado! Por ayúdenos a ayudar a aquellos
con necesidad!
