PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/CURRICULUM UPDATE – Since we began devoting one afternoon a month to Professional
Development (usually the last Wednesday afternoon of the month), those sessions
have been devoted to development of curriculum and teaching methods/practices. Throughout
the 2012-2013 school year, the faculty reviewed, adapted and finalized the
Common Core Standards in Language Arts for implementation during this school
year (2013-2014). As a result, the faculty has been working diligently this
year to implement those standards and reflect them in weekly lesson plans. Part
of the process has been the addition and adoption of several literacy
initiatives. The Four Blocks of Literacy are being used consistently and very
effectively throughout the Early Childhood and early Elementary grades
(Kindergarten through Grade 3). The “Four Blocks” refer to (a) Working With
Words; (b) Guided Reading; (c) Self-Selected Reading; and (d) Writing. Literature Circles have been introduced
in Grades 2-12, creating consistency and supportive methods to help students
take ownership of their reading and comprehension processes. The 6+1 Writing Traits Assessment is
also being used throughout the school, from Kindergarten through Grade 12 in
all subjects (not just Language Arts), and teachers have adopted a common
rubric to use in assessing those traits. Those 6 traits are ideas,
organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and
presentation.
MATH STEERING COMMITTEE – As
we continue our development of the curriculum, following the Curriculum Review
Cycle that teachers developed and adopted, this is the school year to review
the Common Core standards in Math and draft the curriculum document that will
guide instruction and meet the needs of our school. The Math Steering Committee
(Mr. Andrew, Ms. Ashley P., Ms. Ashley L., and Ms. Regina) has been working
tirelessly in conjunction with the Curriculum Coordinators (Ms. Nora, Ms. Ashley
J., and Mr. Kjell) in their research and weekly discussions of best teaching practices
in Math, Common Core standards in Math, and Math manipulatives and textbooks. A
final Math Curriculum Guide will be developed this year and implemented during
the 2014-2015 school year
SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM – The next
step on the Curriculum Review Cycle is to look at our Social Studies
Curriculum, both English and Spanish Social Studies, and revise them in light
of the Social Studies Common Core Curriculum. Throughout the 2014-2015 school
year, a Social Studies Steering Committee will continue the work of reviewing,
discussing, researching, and drafting a cohesive and consistent Social Studies
Common Core Curriculum for Discovery School. That curriculum will then be
implemented during the 2014-2016 school year.
MARKETING COORDINATOR – Ms. Karla Soto
has been hired as Marketing Coordinator for the school. Her office is on the
third floor of the Administration Building—please feel free to introduce
yourself to her and give her any advice you may have on ways we can market

SALSA CLASSES!! Mr. Vincent will
offer free, beginner, salsa classes every Tuesday starting this week, January
28, at 3:30 p.m. in classroom #2 of the Secondary Building. The classes will cover
the history of the dance and the basic movements of Salsa Los Angeles Linea.
The class is offered to all teachers and parents!! Put your dancing shoes on
and join Mr. Vincent for an exciting, one hour class of fun!!
SECOND SESSION FOR MAP TESTING – This is the second week for this MAP testing session.
MS. GILES OUT OF THE OFFICE – Ms. Giles will travel on Thursday, January 30, to attend the Association
for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE) Annual Conference in
Boston. In her absence, she will be available via email and in regular communication
with the school. The Area Administrators (Ms. Gloria, Ms. Cristiana, Ms. Nora),
Administrative Assistant (Ms. Paola), Guidance Counselor (Ms. Marilis),
Receptionist (Ms. Carolina) and Finance Manager (Mr. Efrain) will be available,
as always, to assist you with questions, suggestions, or concerns.
FROM THE COUNSELOR’S OFFICE: The school has contracted
specialists to provide the following presentations for students in grades 5-12:
- Nutrition talk- presented by Mónica Mourra- Wednesday, February 12th from 1:00 to 2:00 pm for grades 5-8, and from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. for grades 9-12
- Stress Talk- Jhosania Ramos- Tuesday, February 18, from 10:15- 11:45 a.m. for grades 9-12
COMMUNITY SERVICE CLUB- The Community Service Club will meet on
Tuesday, January 28th at lunch in Mrs. Agurcia's Room (Rm. 7; Secondary
Building) to plan for our Friendship Visit (Celebración de Dia de Amor y
Amistad). Our visit to Nuestro Pequenos
Hermanos will take place on Sunday, February 2nd. We will meet in the Discovery School parking
lot at 8:15 a.m..
CHOIR PARENTS – On Monday,
February 3, at 3:15 p.m., there will be
a mandatory meeting in the school Library for parents of all Choir students
who are planning to travel to New York City in June 2014 to perform at the
prestigious Carnegie Hall. Information will be given concerning the trip and
payments needed, and important decisions about the trip will be taken. We need at least one parent for each
Choir student to attend this meeting.
SCHOLASTIC BOOKS! - This month your
child(ren) will have the opportunity to purchase books through the
International Scholastic Book Clubs.
This is an optional activity offered by the school, in case you want to
motivate your child to read at home and to increase their own library. With your purchase, our library will
accumulate points to redeem for more books for the benefit of your children in
our school. Order forms and catalogues were sent home on Friday. The final date to purchase the books ON-LINE
is February 10. (All purchases must be made on-line.) The books
will arrive at the school in one single delivery, and we will distribute them
to the students according to their orders, approximately three weeks after the

DESARROLLO
PROFESIONAL/ACTUALIZACION DE CURRICULO - Desde que
comenzamos a dedicarle una tarde al mes para Desarrollo Profesional
(normalmente el ultimo miércoles en la tarde de cada mes), esas reuniones han sido
dedicadas al desarrollo del currículo y practicas/métodos de enseñanza. Durante
el año escolar 2012-2013, el personal docente revisó, adoptó y complementó los Estándares
de Currículo General en Lenguaje y Literatura para su implementación durante
este año escolar (2013-2014). Como resultado, el personal docente ha estado
trabajando diligentemente este año para la implementación de esos estándares y
que se vean reflejados en sus lecciones semanales. Parte del proceso ha sido la
adopción de varias iniciativas de instrucción literaria. El
modelo de instrucción de Cuatro Bloques está siendo utilizado de manera
consistente y efectiva en los grados de pre-escolar y primaria (de Kinder a 3er
grado). Los “Cuatro Bloques” se refieren a: (a) Trabajar con Palabras; (b)
Lectura Dirigida; (c) Auto Selección de Lectura; y (d) Escritura. Los Círculos Literarios han sido
implementados en los grados de 2-12, creando consistencia y métodos de apoyo
para ayudar a los alumnos a dominar los procesos de lectura y comprensión. La Evaluación de Rasgos de Escritura 6+1
también está siendo utilizado en todos los niveles desde Kinder hasta 12 grado
en todas las materias (no solamente en Lenguaje y Literatura), y los maestros
han adoptado una rúbrica común para utilizar en esos rasgos. Esos 6 rasgos son
ideas, organización, voz, selección de palabras, fluidez en oraciones,
convenciones, y presentación.
COMITÉ DE DIRECCION DE MATEMÁTICAS
– Continuando con el desarrollo del currículo, y siguiendo el Ciclo
de Revisión Curricular que los maestros desarrollaron y adoptaron este es el
año escolar para revisar los estándares de Currículo General en matemáticas y
redactar el documento curricular que guie la instrucción y responda a las necesidades
de nuestra escuela. El Comité de Dirección de Matemáticas (Mr. Andrew, Ms.
Ashley P., Ms. Ashley L., y Ms. Regina) han estado trabajando sin cesar junto a
los Coordinadores de Currículo (Ms. Nora, Ms. Ashley J., y Mr. Kjell) en su investigación
y discusiones semanales de las mejores prácticas de enseñanza de matemáticas, Currículo
General en Matemáticas, y manuales y libros de texto de matemáticas. Una guía final
del Currículo de Matemáticas será desarrollada este año e implementada durante
el año escolar 2014-2015.
CURRÍCULO DE ESTUDIOS
SOCIALES – El próximo paso en el Ciclo de Revisión Curricular es ver nuestro Currículo
de Estudios Sociales, tanto en inglés como en español, y revisarlos bajo la luz
del Currículo General Común de Estudios Sociales. Durante el año escolar
2014-2015, un Comité de Dirección de Estudios Sociales continuará el trabajo de
revisión, discusión, investigación, y redactará un coherente y consistente Currículo
General Común de Estudios Sociales para la Escuela Discovery. Ese currículo se
implementará durante el año escolar 2014-2016.
COORDINADORA DE MERCADEO
– Hemos contratado a Ms. Karla Soto como Coordinadora de Mercadeo
para la escuela. Su oficina está localizada en el tercer piso del Edificio de Administración-por
favor no dude en presentarse y darle cualquier consejo en las formas que puede

CLASES
DE SALSA!! Mr. Vincent ofrecerá gratuitamente, clases de
salsa para principiantes, cada martes comenzando esta semana, 29 de enero, a
las 3:30 p.m. en el aula #2 del Edificio de Secundaria. Las clases cubrirán la
historia de la danza y movimientos básicos de la Línea de Salsa de Los Ángeles.
Es una clase para todos los maestros y padres!! Póngase sus zapatos de baile y
acompañe a Mr. Vincent para una hora de una emocionante y divertida clase!!

EXÁMENES MAP – Esta
es la segunda sesión de exámenes MAP.
MS. GILES ESTARÁ FUERA

Conferencia Anual de la Asociación por el Avance a la Educación Internacional (AAIE)
en Boston. Durante su ausencia, estará disponible via correo electrónico y en

CLUB DE SERVICIO
COMUNITARIO – El Club de Servicio Comunitario se reunirá el martes 28 de enero
durante el almuerzo en el aula de Mrs. Agurcia (aula #7, edificio de
Secundaria) para planificar nuestra Visita de Amistad (Celebración del día del
Amor y Amistad). Nuestra visita a Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos se realizará el
domingo 2 de febrero. Nos reuniremos en el estacionamiento de la Escuela
Discovery a las 8:15 a.m.
PADRES DEL CORO - El lunes 3 de febrero, a las 3:15 p.m., habrá una reunión obligatoria en la
biblioteca de la escuela para los padres de los alumnos que están en el Coro
que planean viajar a Nueva York en junio del 2014 para la presentación en el
prestigioso Carnegie Hall. Se proporcionará información relacionada con el viaje
y los pagos necesarios, y se tomarán importantes decisiones. Necesitamos que asista por lo menos uno de los
padres de cada alumno del Coro.
LIBROS DE SCHOLASTIC! Este mes su(s) hijo(s) tendrá
la oportunidad de comprar libros a través del Club Internacional de Libros de
Scholastic. Esta es una actividad opcional ofrecida por la escuela, en caso que
usted quiera motivar a su hijo a leer en casa y aumentar su biblioteca propia.
Con su compra, nuestra biblioteca acumulará puntos para redimirlos por más libros
y así beneficiar a sus hijos en nuestra escuela. Los formularios de pedido y catálogos
fueron enviados a casa el viernes. La
fecha final para la compra de los libros EN-LINEA es el 10 de febrero. (Todas
las compras deben ser hechas en-linea.) Los libros serán entregados todos juntos en la
escuela y nosotros los distribuiremos a los alumnos de acuerdo a sus pedidos,
aproximadamente tres semanas después de la fecha límite de compra. Por favor escríbale
