UPDATE ON PAVING - Because of the need to pave the
entrance and exit to school and leave the paving unused for sufficient time to
harden, the last day of classes before Semana Santa will be March 25. THERE WILL BE NO CLASSES ON THURSDAY,
MARCH 26 AND FRIDAY, MARCH 27.
Faculty and staff may not enter the school without permission during
that time period, including Semana Santa.
Any entry will require special arrangements and permission from the Head
of School
We will still meet the standard of 180 days of
classes set by SACS and by the Honduran Ministry of
Education. Enjoy an extra-long vacation!
We will resume classes on April 7, as planned.
THE NEW INFIRMARY – The
New Infirmary is equipped and running! We extend our sincere heart-felt
gratitude to the DPTO ladies who made this possible. When you have a chance,
please stop by to see how great it looks!
SECONDARY
HOMEWORK GUIDELINES
Secondary
students and their teachers have recently been involved in a dialogue through
Student Council in order to seek an optimal balance between the heavy homework
load some students experience and the achievement of our school’s valid
teaching objectives.
After
several stages of discussion, the administration has asked teachers to adopt
the following guidelines for the remaining of the school year at which time
they will be evaluated. We will continue to work with the Student Council.
General
Guidelines:
1.
Homework must
be graded and returned for feedback and/or reviewed in class before the next
homework is assigned.
2.
ENGRADE needs
to be updated on a weekly basis.
3.
Homework
should be used to differentiate.
4.
In all cases,
homework should be directed at students’ meaningful learning objectives and not
represent additional responsibilities or inconveniences for parents.
5.
Long
term projects will be broken down into small
chunks with specific deadlines and grading per chunk.
Homework
Guidelines:
1.
One
(1) weekend per month (specifically long
weekends) without homework (does not include long term projects).
2.
Group
projects will be assigned as class work and/or online with specific responsibilities, individual grading,
and self and peer evaluations (anonymous) for each group member.
3.
Reading
assignments will specify the page numbers to
be read and will not be time based. A follow up activity is required to monitor
students’ understanding.
4.
Tests
and/or quizzes will be 2 per day maximum and they need to be announced on the white board
(secondary building, second floor) to pace and distribute the work efficiently.
5.
No more than 3 IXL skills per week should be
assigned.
As always, we welcome parental
feedback as we continue to make minor adjustments to ensure parental, student
and teacher satisfaction. We’re all on
the same team!

**MODEL
UNITED NATIONS– a group of secondary students will represent the
school in the ABSH Model UN in San Pedro Sula. The team has been coached by Ms.
Ashley Pileika during the school year and will travel on March 25 for the
competition.
**MATH
OLYMPICS
– another group of students has been practicing all year long to represent the
school in the ABSH Math Olympics in La Ceiba. The teams have been coached by Mr. Cesar
Martinez and Ms. Ashley Lardizabal. The competition will take place on April
10.

We wish to congratulate Victoria Glynn on her most recent
admissions to the following very competitive universities: UC Davis, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Georgia Tech, and Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute. In addition, she was given substantial grants in UC
San Diego and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
More offerings are still to come from the rest of the universities. We
are proud you are one of our DS Wolves, Vicky!

Katarina Fenn is also the recipient of a
significant Financial Aid Award Package from Calvin College consisting of scholarships and grants.

CAREER
DAY - We will be having a Career Day here in school
on April 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. We have invited several professionals
from our Discovery School community as well as from the outside, to come to
share with our kids their experience and thoughts about the career they chose
to pursue. Grades 9th through 12th are invited to attend. If you wish to participate, you are very

EARLY
CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY READ-A-THON –This is the last week of our
Read-a-thon! Grades Kindergarten through five are participating in this month
long competition. Students should be completing the reading logs and turning them in this Wednesday The winner from each class will go out to
lunch as a special treat from our DPTO!
BRICKS4KIDZ - After conducting exit surveys that reveal what a success this
activity was, and given its educational value, the school will be offering a Second
Module of Bricks4kidz. The session will be held on Fridays (in April 10,17
and 24; in May 8,15 and 22) from 3:15 to 4:15 and will be open for students in
from kindergarten to grade five.
Registration will be available on the afternoons of Friday, March 20 and
Wednesday, March 25. Hurry and save your space!

INFORME SOBRE LA PAVIMENTACION – Debido a
la necesidad de pavimentar la entrada y salida de la escuela y dejar el
concreto sin uso durante suficiente tiempo para que se solidifique, el último
día de clases antes de Semana Santa será el 25 de marzo. NO HABRAN CLASES EL
JUEVES 26 DE MARZO NI EL VIERNES 27 DE MARZO. El personal docente y
administrativo no podrán ingresar a la escuela durante este periodo sin
permiso, incluyendo Semana Santa. Cualquier ingreso requerirá de un arreglo
especial y permiso del Rector de la Escuela.
Todavía estaremos

LINEAMIENTOS PARA TAREAS DE
SECUNDARIA
Los alumnos de secundaria y sus alumnos recientemente han estado
involucrados en un dialogo a través del Consejo Estudiantil de manera que
busquen un balance óptimo entre la carga pesada de tareas que algunos alumnos
experimentan y el cumplimiento de los objetivos válidos de enseñanza de nuestra
escuela.
Después de varias etapas de discusión, la administración les ha pedido a
los maestros que adopten los siguientes lineamientos para el resto del año
escolar, para el cual serán evaluados. Continuaremos trabajando con el Consejo
Estudiantil.
Lineamientos generales:
1.
Las tareas
deben ser evaluadas y entregadas para retroalimentación y/o revisadas en clases
antes que la siguiente tarea sea asignada.
2.
ENGRADE debe
ser actualizada semanalmente.
3.
Las tareas
deben ser usadas para diferenciación.
4.
En todos los
casos, la tarea debe ser dirigida a los objetivos de aprendizaje significativos
de los alumnos y no deben representar responsabilidades adicionales o
inconvenientes para los padres.
5.
Los proyectos de largo plazo serán divididos en pequeñas partes con fechas de
entrega específicas y evaluación por cada parte.
Lineamientos de las tareas:
1.
Un (1) fin de semana al mes (específicamente los fines de semana largos) sin
tarea (no incluye proyectos de largo plazo)
2.
Proyectos de grupo serán asignados como trabajo de clase y/o en línea con responsabilidades específicas, calificación
individual, y evaluación personal y de los compañeros (anónimos) para cada
miembro del grupo.
3.
Asignaciones de lectura especificarán los números de las páginas a leer y
se basará en tiempo. Se requerirá una actividad de seguimiento para monitorear
la comprensión del alumno.
4.
Exámenes y/o pruebas serán de
un máximo de 2 por día y deben ser anunciadas en la pizarra (edificio de
secundaria, segundo piso) para dar tiempo y distribuir el trabajo
efectivamente.
5.
No deben ser
asignadas más de 3 secciones de IXL por
semana.
Como siempre, la retroalimentación de los padres es bienvenida para que
sigamos haciendo ajustes menores para asegurar satisfacción de los padres,
alumnos y maestros. Todos estamos en el mismo equipo!

Ashley Pileika durante el año escolar y viajarán el 25 de marzo para las
competencias.
**OLIMPIADAS DE MATEMÁTICAS – otro
grupo de alumnos ha estado practicando durante todo el año para representar a
la escuela en las Olimpiadas de Matemáticas ABSH en La Ceiba. Los equipos han
sido entrenados por Mr. Cesar Martinez y Ms. Ashley Lardizabal. La competencia
se llevará a cabo el 10 de abril.

FERIA VOCACIONAL – Tendremos una Feria Vocacional aquí en la escuela el día 17
de abril, desde las 8:30 a.m. a 10:30 a.m. Hemos invitado a varios
profesionales de la comunidad de la Escuela Discovery así como de otros lugares,
para que vengan a compartir con nuestros alumnos sus experiencias y
pensamientos acerca de profesión que ellos eligieron. Los grados de 9no a 12vo
están invitados a asistir. Si desea participar, es bienvenido a hacerlo. Todavía

MARATON DE LECTURA DE PRE-ESCOLAR Y
PRIMARIA – Esta es la última semana de nuestro
maratón de lectura! Los alumnos de Kínder hasta 5to grado están participando en
esta competencia que dura todo el mes. Los alumnos deben completar el registro
de lectura y entregarlos este miércoles! El ganador de cada clase tendrá un almuerzo
especial que será proporcionado por el DPTO!
BRICKS4KIDZ – Después de realizar encuestas de salida que
revelaron el éxito que esta actividad tuvo, y considerando su valor educativo,
la escuela estará ofreciendo un segundo modulo de Bricks4Kidz.La sesión
se llevará a cabo los días viernes (el 10, 17 y 24 de abril; el 8, 15 y 22 de
mayo) de las 3:15 a las 4:15 p.m. y estará abierto para alumnos de kínder hasta quinto grado. Las
inscripciones se realizarán en las tardes de los viernes 20 y 27 de marzo. Apresúrese
