SECURITY ON FIELD TRIPS - In order to
continue providing enriching out-of-school experiences for our students and
still ensure that they are safe when they are outside our walls, the U.S.
Embassy has offered to coordinate security for student field trips. Although we
have not had any security incidents in the past, we do appreciate this added
measure of safety for our students and staff.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES – Our second
semester session of After School Activities begins this week. If you did not
receive the form from your child, we will send it by email today (Monday). There
are also extra forms available in the office. We are looking into the
possibility of adding a school bus following Choir practice, and information
will be provided once it is available.
FOR PRE-SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY PARENTS - Please let your
homeroom teacher or the Librarian, Mr. Carlos, know if you are interested in
having books to read with your child during the week. We would be delighted to
share our Library and/or classroom books with you, and welcome this opportunity
to help stimulate and encourage our students’ literacy development.

SHAKESPEARE CAN FIX THAT!

Two
college student janitors are stuck in a therapy group meeting and one of
them, a reader of Shakespeare, ends up being the facilitator because the real
group leader is running late. The
therapy group is a room full nuts: one believes she is a CIA operative,
another makes bodily noises, then there’s the hypochondriac and the
narcoleptic, and the sarcastic girl, and finally, the one who cries over
everything. Of course, a comedy
wouldn’t be complete without an exploding toilet.

ABSH LANGUAGE ARTS FESTIVAL – The big event is only 2 weeks away! We are
excited about hosting students and parents from schools throughout Honduras for
this second annual event. Our students will be participating in English
Spelling and Speech, and Spanish Spelling and Speech contests. All Discovery
staff will be on hand to ensure that the event goes smoothly.
MAP
TESTING – This is the second week for this MAP testing session. We have noticed a renewed interest and
commitment among our students as they are taking the tests this session. There
have been many, many happy faces as students reach or exceed the goals that
they had previously set. Although the MAP tests are normed with data from students
in the Pacific Northwest in the United States, the true value lies in the
personalization of the data and the strategies that are given to meet each
individual student’s needs. The training that all of the staff were given in
September by the Northwest Education Association (NWEA) has enabled us to go
beyond collecting data to the next level—where it impacts student learning.
Once this session of testing has concluded, teachers will meet in teams to
discuss the results and develop strategies to continue using the data for each
child. In addition, the administrative team will analyze the overall class data
to establish professional development opportunities, as needed.
GRADE LEVEL PARENT MEETINGS – Ms. Giles will
begin meeting with parents by grade level in the Library today, Monday,
January 28. Relevant information from those meetings will be shared with the
teachers in an effort to foster communication and continually improve our
program. All meetings will begin at 8:00 a.m. The schedule is as

ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION (AAIE) – Ms.
Giles will be away from school from February 13-19 to attend the Annual
Conference of the AAIE in San Francisco, California. During that time, she will
have daily access to email.

SEGURIDAD EN LOS PASEOS – A manera de poder continuar proporcionando experiencias
fuera de la escuela para el enriquecimiento de nuestros alumnos y poder
garantizar su seguridad cuando están fuera de nuestro campus, la embajada
Americana ha ofrecido coordinar seguridad para los paseos de nuestros alumnos.
Aunque no hemos tenido ningún incidente en el pasado, agradecemos esta nueva
medida de seguridad para nuestros alumnos y maestros.
ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES – Las sesiones del segundo semestre de las Actividades Extracurriculares
comenzarán esta semana. Si no recibió el formulario que se envió con su
hijo(a), se lo enviaremos por correo electrónico el día de hoy (lunes). También
tenemos formularios extra en administración. Estamos considerando la
posibilidad de agregar un bus después de la práctica del Coro, cuando tengamos
la información se la enviaremos.

EL
DEPARTAMENTO DE DRAMA DE LA ESCUELA DISCOVERY PRESENTA:

Dos jóvenes conserjes,
estudiantes universitarios, se quedan estancados en una reunión de terapia de
grupo, y uno de ellos, a quien le gusta leer mucho a Shakespeare, termina
siendo el facilitador ya que el líder del grupo llegará tarde. La terapia de grupo está llena de locos:
uno se cree agente de la CIA, otro hace ruidos con su cuerpo, esta también el
hipocondriaco y el narcoléptico, la chica sarcástica, y finalmente, el que
llora por todo. Por supuesto, la comedia no estaría completa sin una
explosión de baño.

FESTIVAL DEL LENGUAJE ABSH – Faltan 2 semanas solamente para el gran evento!
Recibiremos aproximadamente 500 personas en nuestras instalaciones, y
ansiosamente esperamos atender a colegas y alumnos de toda Honduras para este
segundo evento anual. Nuestros alumnos participarán en concursos de Ortografía
y Oratoria en ingles, y Ortografía y Oratoria en español. Todo el personal de
la Escuela Discovery estará presente para asegurarnos que el evento se realice
sin novedad.
EXÁMENES MAP - Esta es la segunda semana de esta sesión de
exámenes MAP. Hemos notado un interés y compromiso renovado entre nuestros
alumnos a medida que están tomando los exámenes. Vemos muchas, muchas caras
felices cuando los alumnos alcanzan o sobrepasan las metas que se les han
establecido previamente. Aun cuando los exámenes MAP son comparados con la
información de los alumnos del Noroeste Pacifico de los Estados Unidos, el
verdadero valor recae en la personalización de la información y las estrategias
que se proporcionan para alcanzar las necesidades de cada alumno. El
entrenamiento que recibió todo el personal en septiembre por la Asociación
Educacional Noroeste (NWEA) nos ha permitido ir más allá, recopilando
información al siguiente nivel-donde impacta el aprendizaje del alumno. Una vez
que esta sesión de exámenes concluya, los maestros se reunirán en equipos para
discutir los resultados y desarrollar estrategias para continuar usando la
información en cada niño. Adicionalmente, el equipo administrativo analizará los
resultados generales por grado para establecer oportunidades de desarrollo
profesional, según sea necesario.
REUNIONES CON PADRES, POR GRADO – Ms. Giles comenzará a reunirse con los padres de
familia por cada grado en la Biblioteca, hoy lunes 28 de enero. Información
importante de esas sesiones será compartida con los maestros como un esfuerzo
de mejorar la comunicación y mejorar continuamente nuestro programa. Todas las
reuniones darán comienzo a las 8:00 a.m. A continuación detallamos el
