We are off to a very busy start of the school year, and it is always exciting to see parents, teachers and students bubbling with excitement as they embrace this new school year. From learning about and watching the solar eclipse, to the DPTO organizing a matinee of CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS, to all the hands on learning that is taking place, it is a great time to be at Discovery School!

Estamos con un comienzo muy ocupado del año escolar, y siempre es emocionante ver padres de familia, maestros y estudiantes muy emocionados mientras abrazan este nuevo año escolar. ¡Desde aprender y ver el eclipse solar, hasta la organización del DPTO de una matinée de la película El CAPITAN CALZONCILLOS, hasta el aprendizaje constructivo que está teniendo lugar, es un gran momento para estar en Escuela Discovery!

Our DPTO is growing, and we are starting the year with a new energetic and dynamic team! Welcome to our newest members!
Our Board for this year is as follows:

Our very first activity this year will be the movie matinee this Saturday, August 26, at 11:00 a.m. in Novacentro. We will be presenting the movie CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS with English audio and Spanish subtitles. Tickets for L250 will be on sale beginning Monday, August 21 from the desk with Ms. Ruth or Ms. Gaby. These tickets include the entrance to the movie and the combo of your choice.
Spaces at the theater are very limited, so try to get yours early. Remember that by supporting the DPTO activities we are building school spirit and community, and we also support the education of our child(ren).

Nuestra primera actividad para este año será la matinée de la película este sábado, 26 de agosto, a las 11:00 a.m. en Novacentro. Estaremos presentando la película CAPITAN CALZONCILLOS con audio en inglés y subtítulos en español. Los boletos estarán a la venta (L. 250) a partir del lunes 21 de agosto pueden adquirir los boletos en recepción con Ms. Ruth o Ms. Gaby. Los boletos incluyen la entrada a la película y el combo de comida de su elección.
Los espacios en el teatro son muy limitados, así que trate de llegar temprano en la semana. Recuerde que al apoyar las actividades de la DPTO estamos construyendo el espíritu escolar y la comunidad, y también apoyamos la educación de nuestros hijos.

Our new school cafeteria staff has been working tirelessly to provide excellent quality food at non-profit prices for our students, teachers, staff and parents. We continue to make adjustments to meet the needs of our community as they arise and work on varying the menus to make them attractive and healthy, It is reassuring to see the overwhelmingly positive response we have had in the first week and a half, and will continue to strive towards providing the best service possible.

“ Reducing our Waste Line” - In commitment to Discovery's mission for environmental responsibility, we will begin a cross-curricular STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, arts, and mathematics) project for waste reduction. To spark our students' understanding of issues caused by waste, we will begin a variety of activities to inspire their waste reduction.
On August 28 and August 29, the students will be collecting all their waste. Waste will be explored and evaluated in their classrooms. As well, the 10th grade environmental students will prepare activities that will promote waste reduction, including an Ecofriendly Lunch Day, a day which helps to encourage our students to pack a “waste free” lunch. This will be held on Friday, September 1. For more information about waste free lunches, please visit http://wastefreelunches.org/ .
We also encourage recycling. Please use the recycling bins throughout campus to recycling plastic, aluminum, and paper. |
“Reduciendo nuestra Línea de Residuos" - Comprometidos con la misión de Discovery para la responsabilidad ambiental, comenzaremos un proyecto transversal de STREAM (ciencia, tecnología, lectura, ingeniería, artes y matemáticas) para la reducción de basura. Para despertar el entendimiento de nuestros estudiantes de los problemas causados por los desechos, comenzaremos una variedad de actividades para inspirar su reducción.
El 28 y el 29 de agosto los estudiantes recogerán todos sus desechos (basura). Los desechos serán explorados y evaluados en sus aulas. Además, los estudiantes de 10mo grado de la clase del medio ambiente prepararán actividades que promoverán su reducción, incluyendo un día de almuerzo ecológico, es decir un día que traigan nuestros estudiantes un almuerzo "que no produzca basura". También fomentamos el reciclaje. Utilice los contenedores de reciclaje en todo el campus para reciclar plástico, aluminio y papel.

HOMEWORK CALENDAR – this is a very useful tool to keep track of homework, quizzes and tests, etc. The homework calendar is located within every blog.
ENGRADEPRO – we are in the process of setting up students’ accounts. Access codes will be distributed as soon as they are ready.

PSAT EXAM: The school will administer the PSAT exam on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at 8:00 a.m. A letter with all the PSAT exam information was sent late in May as well as this past week.
We are reminding students/parents to please make the payment of $25 for this exam in the finance office. We have extended the deadline to pay by August 31, 2017.
Seniors News - Just a quick reminder for parents to make an appointment via email with Ms. Marilís Zambrana, in case you haven’t done so, to discuss your child’s future college plans. Please do so before the September holiday.

EXAMEN PSAT: La escuela administrará el examen PSAT el miércoles 11 de octubre de 2017 a las 8:00 a.m. Una nota con toda la información del examen PSAT se envió a finales de mayo, así como la semana pasada.
Le estamos recordando a los estudiantes / padres que por favor realizar el pago de $ 25 por este examen en la Oficina de Finanzas. Hemos extendido la fecha para realizar el pago antes del 31 de agosto de 2017.

COMMUNITY NEWS - HELPING OUR OWN

![]() As the caring and supportive community that we are, the school is asking for our parents, teachers and students support for Ms. Regina Ochoa. She has been helping her mother for the past month in her fight against cancer. To pay for a necessary treatment, Ms. Regina has organized a Noche Beneficiosa to raise funds. This will take place on Thursday, August 31 anytime from 12:00 to 8:30 p.m. at McDonald’s on Juan Pablo II. Tickets can be gotten directly from Ms. Regina in the secondary building, or you may ask Ms. Ruth for them.

Como una gran comunidad de apoyo que somos, la escuela está solicitando a nuestros padres de familia, maestros y estudiantes el apoyo a Ms. Regina Ochoa.
