CONGRATULATIONS! Ms. Karen Raudales
(grade four teacher) and Mr. Vincent Taylor (Middle School Language Arts
teacher) successfully completed and graduated from their Masters Program with
the State University of New York (SUNY) last weekend. Kudos to both of you for
your hard work and dedication! Discovery School is very lucky to have you as

MIDTERM

Midterm reports will be issued this Friday, November 22. Please make sure you
ask your child for them. If a conference was not requested by a teacher but you
would like to have one, please contact the school to set up an appointment.
ADVANC-ED
LATIN AMERICA CONFERENCE – Ms. Giles
will be leaving on November 21 to attend the yearly Advanced Ed conference. In her
absence, if you have any problems please contact her via email or refer to your
Area Administrator (Ms Nora for Early Childhood; Ms. Cristiana for Elementary;
Ms. Gloria for Secondary). For any security concerns, especially surrounding
the election weekend, please contact Efrain in the Finance Office, who will be

Wednesday, November 20 to the girls from grades 4 – 6 on changes that occur during the puberty stage
of development. This will take place from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. We will be sending a permission slip with
your child this week for parents to sign if they wish for their daughter to
attend this presentation.

last day! The grade that brought the most boxes will be awarded a pizza
party or ice cream party! Please help us help those in need!
CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE: Nuestro Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) is an
international organization that takes in abandoned and orphaned children,
providing a home and education. Here in
Honduras, the NPH organization provides for over 500 children in at large ranch
near La Venta
and home in Tegucigalpa for severely handicapped children. While many children at the ranch have aunts,
uncles, or grandparents that come to visit them and can provide some Christmas
gifts, some children at a ranch have no family to visit. It is these children, whom we would like to
provide for this Christmas. On the
second floor of the secondary building, a NPH Giving Tree will be set up. Choose a paper tree that has a child’s
information about his/her size for shoes or socks. Purchase the new item and return it to Mrs.
Agurcia’s Room (Rm. 7) by Tuesday, December 10th, with the tree tag taped to it. As well, there are tree tags for basic food
items that will be donated to the orphanage.
Cash donations will also be accepted to provide shoes and socks for
children whose tags were not selected.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CLUB: There will be a meeting of the
Community Service Club on Tuesday, November 19th in Mrs. Agurcia's Room (Rm.7)
at lunch. All secondary students are
welcome.
SCIENCE FAIR: Please remember that Science
Fair will be held on Friday, December 6th.
That day, all 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10A students will be involved in the
fair during 3rd and 4th periods. First period will proceed as normal and 1/2 of
2nd period will be used to set up the fair on the second floor of the secondary
building. As well, students with top
projects will be asked to present their project to a visiting judge that afternoon
in the library. Students from other
classes will be invited to visit the fair in the following schedule: 6A, 6B, 10B, 11, and 12 during 3rd period,
and elementary classes during 4th period (10:53-11:43). More details about the schedule will given
closer to the fair.
EMERGENCY PLAN SURROUNDING NATIONAL ELECTION 11/24/13 – RESTATING THE
INFORMATION FROM LAST WEEK’S MONDAY MEMO:
PRE-EMPTIVE ACTION - In anticipation of the upcoming national election on Sunday, November
24, 2013, the Administration and Board have been in communication with the
Regional Security Officer at the U.S. Embassy. We have decided the following:
Discovery School will be closed on Monday, November
25, 2013
in order to keep our students and staff safe and to enable us to assess
the situation and make a measured decision for the remainder of the week.
COMMUNICATION --
1. Parents will receive
communication from the school at
around 6:00 p.m. on Monday evening, November 25, 2013, concerning
school for the remainder of that week, or at least for Tuesday.
2. Additional information will be
shared with parents as needed in the days following the election, and parents
will be contacted by their child’s homeroom teacher. We realize that this means
you may receive multiple calls and we request your patience with the process.
3. Parents must notify their child’s
Homeroom Teacher this week of all means that can be used to reach them
in an emergency—cell phone numbers, land line numbers, Whats App information,
email addresses.
4. All Homeroom Teachers
have already done a trial run of our communication network last week to ensure
that all of our contact information is working. Parents – If you did not
receive a notification from your homeroom teacher last week, please speak with
them immediately to confirm your contact information.
5. If you receive a Whats App or
text message, or an email, please send a brief and immediate response to the teacher saying “got
it!” so we will know you have the received the message.
Teachers will then notify the Administration concerning what parents have been
reached. We will continue trying to reach those who have not.
6. In an emergency, messages will
also be sent by email from the school administrative office.
7. It is possible that in an emergency
situation, the phone and Internet lines may not be working efficiently. In that
case, we ask parents to exercise caution, try to be informed through the media
and use their best judgment in determining the best course of action for their
family.
PREPARATION
We would like to suggest the following to our school community, due to
the uncertainty of the situation:
1. Do not rely on or spread rumors
2. Stay home on Sunday and Monday
(Nov. 24 and 25) wherever possible
3. Have a supply of water, milk,
and essential foods on hand
4. Have a supply of any needed
medications on hand
5. Have your car fueled
6. KEEP YOUR PHONES CHARGED, TURNED ON, AND WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES
7. HAVE ALL EMERGENCY NUMBERS PRE-PROGRAMMED IN
YOUR PHONE, AS WELL AS THE NUMBER OF YOUR CHILD’S HOMEROOM TEACHER
8. IF YOU HAVE A PREPAID PHONE, BE SURE TO HAVE
EXTRA PHONE CARDS AVAIABLE FOR EMERGENCY TRANSMISSION OF MESSAGES
DECISION MAKING
The Administration will be in close communication with
the Regional Security Office at the U.S. Embassy in the days before, during and
after the election, and the school will base our decisions on the actions of
the U.S. Embassy regarding closing or staying open.

ARBOL DE NAVIDAD DE
DONATIVOS: Nuestros
Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) es una organización internacional que acoge niños
abandonados y huérfanos, para proveerles casa y educación. Aquí en Honduras, la
organización NPH cuida a más de 500 niños en una finca grande cerca de La Venta
y en casa en Tegucigalpa para niños con discapacidades severas. Mientras que
algunos niños de la finca tienen las visitas de sus tías, tíos, o abuelos que
les pueden llevar regalos de navidad, algunos de los niños en la misma finca no
tienen familia que los visite. Es a estos niños a los cuales deseamos
ofrecerles algo en esta navidad. En el segundo piso del edificio de secundaria,
se pondrá un árbol de donativos para NPH. Escoja un arbolito de papel que tenga
la información del niño acerca de su talla de zapato o calcetines. Compre el artículo
nuevo y tráigalo al aula de Ms. Christina Agurcia (aula 7) antes del martes 10
de diciembre, con el arbolito de
papel pegado. Asimismo, hay etiquetas de arbolitos para productos de la
canasta básica que serán donados al orfanato. Las donaciones en efectivo también
son aceptadas para comprar zapatos y calcetines a los niños que nadie seleccionó

CLUB DE SERVICIO
COMUNITARIO: Habrá
una reunión del Club de Servicio Comunitario el martes 19 de noviembre en el
aula de Mrs. Christina Agurcia (aula 7) en la hora de almuerzo. Todos los
alumnos de secundaria son bienvenidos.
FERIA DE CIENCIAS: Por favor recuerde que
la Feria de Ciencias se llevará a cabo el viernes 6 de diciembre. Ese día,
todos los alumnos de 7mo, 8vo, 9no, y 10A estarán involucrados en la feria
durante el 3er y 4to periodo. El primer periodo será normal y la mitad del 2do
periodo será utilizado para arreglar la feria en el segundo piso del edificio
de secundaria. Asimismo, los alumnos con proyectos con los proyectos principales
se les pedirá que presenten su proyecto a un juez visitante esa misma tarde en
la biblioteca. Los alumnos de otras clases serán invitados a ver la feria con
el siguiente horario: 6A, 6B, 10B, 11, y 12 irán durante el 3er periodo, y los
alumnos de primaria durante el 4to periodo (10:53-11:43). Mas detalles del horario
se darán cuando estemos más cerca de la fecha de la feria.

DURANTE ELECCIONES NACIONALES 24/11/13 –
REPITIENDO LA INFORMACIÓN
DEL MEMO DE LOS LUNES DE LA SEMANA PASADA:
ACCIONES
PREVENTIVAS
Como anticipación a las elecciones nacionales
del día domingo 24 de noviembre, 2013,
la Administración y la Junta han mantenido comunicación con el Oficial de
Seguridad Regional de la Embajada Americana. Hemos decidido lo siguiente:
La Escuela Discovery estará cerrada el lunes 25 de
noviembre, 2013
para que mantener la seguridad de nuestros
alumnos y personal, así como permitirnos
evaluar la situación y tomar una decisión medida para el resto de la semana.
COMUNICACIÓN
--
1. Los padres recibirán comunicación de la escuela aproximadamente a las 6:00 p.m. en la
tarde del lunes el 25 de noviembre, 2013, refiriéndose a la escuela
para el resto de la semana, o por lo menos acerca del día martes.
2. Información adicional se compartirá con los padres según
sea necesario en los siguientes días de las elecciones, y los padres serán
contactados por los maestros guías de sus hijos. Nos damos cuenta que puede que
usted reciba múltiples llamadas y le solicitamos su paciencia con el proceso.
3. Los padres deben notificar a los maestros guías esta
semana de todos los medios por los cuales se les pueda contactar en caso de
emergencia-números de celulares, números fijos, información de WhatsApp,
correos electrónicos.
4.
Todos los maestros guías realizarán una prueba piloto de
nuestra red de comunicación el lunes o martes de esta semana para asegurarnos
que la información de contacto funciona.
5. Si recibe un mensaje de WhatsApp o de texto, o un correo
electrónico, por favor envíe un respuesta breve e
inmediata al maestro diciendo “recibido!” para que sepamos que han recibido el mensaje. Los maestros después
notificarán a la Administración de los padres que han localizado. Continuaremos
tratando de localizar a los que no se comunicaron.
6. En caso de emergencia, los mensajes se enviarán por
correo electrónico de la oficina administrativa de la escuela.
7. Es posible que en una situación de emergencia, las líneas
de teléfono e internet no funcionen de manera muy eficiente. En ese caso, les
solicitamos a los padres que sean cautelosos, traten de mantenerse informados
por los medios de comunicación y usen su mejor juicio en determinar la mejor
forma de actuar para sus familias.
PREPARACION
Nos gustaría sugerirles lo siguiente a
nuestra comunidad escolar, debido a la incertidumbre de la situación:
1. No se deje llevar ni disperse rumores.
2. Quédese en casa el domingo y lunes (24 y 25 de nov.)
donde sea posible.
3. Mantenga un suministro disponible de agua, leche, y
alimentos esenciales.
4. Mantenga un suministro disponible de medicamentos
necesarios.
5. Llene el tanque de combustible de su carro.
6. MANTENGA SUS
TELEFONOS CARGADOS, ENCENDIDOS, Y EN SU PODER EN TODO MOMENTO
7. MANTENGA LOS
NUMEROS DE EMERGENCIA PRE-PROGRAMADOS EN SU TELEFONO, ASI COMO EL NÚMERO DEL
MAESTRO GUIA DE SU HIJO.
8. SI TIENE UN
TELEFONO DE PRE-PAGO, ASEGÚRESE DE TENER TARJETAS DE RECARGA EXTRAS DISPONIBLES
PARA TRANSMISION DE MENSAJES DE EMERGENCIA.
TOMA DE DESICIONES
La administración estará en constante
comunicación con el Oficial Regional de Seguridad de la Embajada Americana en
los días antes, durante y después de las elecciones, y la escuela basará las
decisiones en las acciones de la Embajada Americana concerniente a cerrar o
mantenerse abiertos.
