MESSAGE FROM BOARD PRESIDENT [Colin Baril]: As was mentioned at the General Assembly in
January, the Board of Directors is asking for a few parents volunteers to join
a working group to help review the statutes of the school, and suggest
recommendations for changes to improve the functioning and governance of
Discovery School.
So
far, we have three volunteers, but would like to add a few more to the
group. There will be one to two meetings per month for the rest of the
school year.
The
intent would be to conduct a general review of the statutes, but also focus on
some of the statutes with problematic aspects like General Assembly quorum
criteria and class-size limits.

contact Dr. Ketterer or Colin Baril for more information.
EARLY CHILDHOOD
AND ELEMENTARY READ-A-THON – It is that time of the year again, to
commemorate Dr. Seuss’ birthday (March 2) and have our annual Read-a-thon. The
Early Childhood and Elementary students (grades k-5) will be keeping a record
of their reading on a special reading log for the next three weeks. On March 18,
the reading logs will be turned in to determine the winners. As in previous
years, the DPTO sponsors a lunch at Chili’s for all the class winners! Please
encourage your children to read, read, read!
3rd QUARTER REPORT CARDS AND
CONFERENCES - Report cards will be sent home
with your child on Friday, March 18, if there is no need for a conference. An
email will be sent home if you need to come to school and meet with your
child’s teacher(s). Parent teacher conferences will be held that same Friday,
March 18 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. We hope you will take this opportunity to come
to school and meet with your child's teachers.
TEACHERS AT THE T3 CONFERENCE IN SAN
PEDRO SULA – Ms. Karen Raudales, Mr. Andrew
Duryea, Ms. Dariela Velasquez and Ms. Cara Shelton are representing Discovery
School at the Teachers Teaching Teachers Conference in San Pedro Sula this
Thursday and Friday. They will be sharing their expertise and knowledge with
teachers from all over Honduras. Way to Go, Teachers!
SECONDARY NEWS:
DAILY
ATTENDANCE – We would like to remind
parents that it is extremely important that your child arrives to school on
time EVERY DAY. By getting to school
on time, your child is able to organize his/her locker and backpack, turn in
all homework, and still have time to meet and greet his friends. When your
child is late to school, he come to class stressed out, interrupts the class, and
misses important information given by the teacher at the beginning of the
class. We strongly recommend your child arrives to school by 7:45 a.m. There is
a warning bell @ 7:55 and then classes begin promptly @ 8:00 a.m.
ABSH MODEL
UNITED NATIONS – The school will be taking 16
students to participate in the ABSH Model United Nations this coming March 15 –
17 in the city of San Pedro Sula. Students from both Middle and High School
have been preparing to represent the school in this interesting simulation of
the United Nations. The students have been coached by Ms. Cara Shelton and Mr.
Andrew Duryea. The students are
Sofia Sherman, Aisleen Turner, Anna Cueva, Maria Alejandra Toncel, Laura
Toncel, Elena Staples, Armando Blanco, Liam Turner, Jose A. Zuniga, Juan D.
Caballero, Gabriel Rodriguez, Eduardo Gutierrez, Samuel Walsh, Narayan Baril,
Fernando Herrera, and Fernando Ochoa. We wish
them good luck!

***Presentation
for Parents: We cordially invite all DS school
parents to attend a presentation that will be given by the Lic. Manuel Morales
on the topic “The Four Types of
Parents”. This presentation will take place on Thursday, March 10, at 12:00 p.m., in the Conference Room. The school
will be providing some refreshments. We will also be rewarding the students per
area (Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary) of the parents attending.
Secondary area is offering 5 bonus points on a test counting towards the
subject they are struggling the most in,
and Early Childhood/Elementary is offering a pizza party for the kids. We hope
you will be able to attend!

REQUEST FROM MS. AMY – Ms. Amy just adopted a dog from the Asociacion de
Rescatistas Independientes, and the organization is in dire need of dog food (concentrado)
- a 25 pound bag lasts about a week. If anyone is interested in helping out
this worthy cause, please contact Ms. Amy (4B).

MENSAJE DEL PRESIDENTE DE LA JUNTA DIRECTIVA
(Colin Baril) – Como se mencionó
en la Asamblea General de enero, la Junta Directiva está buscando padres que
deseen ser voluntarios para trabajar en grupo y ayudar a la revisión de los estatutos
de la escuela, sugerir recomendaciones de cambios para mejorar el
funcionamiento y la gobernabilidad de la Escuela Discovery.
Por ahora, tenemos tres
voluntarios, pero queremos agregar algunos más al grupo. Tendremos una o dos
reuniones por mes por el resto del año escolar.
La intención será
conducir una revisión general de los estatutos, pero también enfocarnos en
algunos estatutos con aspectos problemáticos como el criterio del quórum de las
Asambleas Generales y los tamaños de las clases.

MARATON DE LECTURA DE PRE-ESCOLAR Y PRIMARIA – Es esta época del año nuevamente, donde
conmemoramos el cumpleaños del Dr. Seuss (2 de marzo) y tenemos nuestro Maratón
de Lectura anual. Los alumnos de pre-escolar y primaria (de K-5to grado)
estarán registrando su lectura en un cuadro de registro especial por las próximas
tres semanas. El18 de marzo, los registros de lectura serán entregados para
determinar quiénes son los ganadores. Como en los años anteriores, el DPTO
patrocina un almuerzo en Chili para los ganadores de cada grado! Favor anime a
su(s) hijo(s) a leer, leer, leer!
CALIFICACIONES Y CONFERENCIAS DEL 3ER TRIMESTRE – Las calificaciones se enviarán a casa con sus
hijos el viernes 18 de marzo, si no tenemos necesidad de una conferencia. Se
enviará un email si necesitamos que venga a reunirse con el/los maestro(s) de
su hijo. Las conferencias de padres y maestros se realizarán el mismo viernes
18 de marzo de la 1:00 p.m. a 3:00 p.m. Esperamos que tome esta oportunidad
para venir a la escuela y reunirse con los maestros de sus hijos.
CONFERENCIA T3 PARA MAESTROS EN SAN PEDRO SULA – Ms. Karen Raudales, Mr. Andrew Duryea, Ms. Dariela
Velasquez, y Ms. Cara Shelton estarán representando a la Escuela Discovery en
la Conferencia Maestros Enseñando a Maestros en San Pedro Sula, este jueves y
viernes. Estarán compartiendo su experiencia y conocimiento con maestros de
toda Honduras. Bien hecho maestros!
NOTICIAS DE SECUNDARIA:
ASISTENCIA DIARIA – Queremos recordarles a los padres que es
extremadamente importante que sus hijos lleguen a la escuela a tiempo TODOS LOS DÍAS. Al llegar a tiempo, le
da tiempo a su hijo(a) a organizar su casillero y mochila, entregar las tareas,
y todavía tener tiempo para saludar a sus amigos. Cuando su hijo(a) llega
tarde, llega a las clases estresado, interrumpe la clase, y se pierde de
información importante que los maestros dan al inicio de la clase. Firmemente
les recomendamos que sus hijos lleguen a la escuela antes de las 7:45 a.m.
Suena una campana de aviso a las 7:55 a.m. y las clases comienzan a las 8:00
a.m. en punto.
MODELO DE NACIONES UNIDAS ABSH – La escuela llevará 16 alumnos a participar en el
Modelo de Naciones Unidas ABSH este próximo 15 al 17 de marzo en la ciudad de
San Pedro Sula. Los alumnos tanto de escuela media como de secundaria se han
estado preparando para representar la escuela en esta simulación tan
interesante de las Naciones Unidas. Los alumnos han sido entrenados por Ms.
Cara Shelton y Mr. Andrew Duryea. Los alumnos son Sofía Sherman, Aisleen

***Presentación para padres: Los invitamos cordialmente a asistir a la
presentación " Los Cuatro Tipos de Padres" que será dirigida
por el Lic. Manuel Morales. Esta charla se llevará a cabo el día jueves, 10
de marzo, a las 12:00 p.m. en el Salón de Conferencias. La escuela
compartirá con los presentes unos refrigerios. Además se estará recompensando a
los alumnos de los padres que asistan. En secundaria, se están ofreciendo 5
puntos extras que contarán para un examen de una materia que el alumno esté
teniendo dificultad. El alumno podrá escoger que materia será. Pre-Escolar y
Primaria tendrán un pequeño festejo disfrutando de pizza y bebidas. Esperamos
que muchos padres puedan ser parte de esta enriquecedora experiencia.
SOLICITUD DE MS. AMY – Ms. Amy recientemente adoptó un perro de la Asociación
de Rescatistas Independientes, y esta organización está en la urgente necesidad
de comida para perros (concentrado) – un bolsa de 25 lbs. dura cerca de una
semana. Si alguno está interesado en ayudar a esta noble causa, favor comuníquese
con Ms. Amy (4B).
