MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD –
Please remember that there will be a General Assembly on Saturday, May 14, at 9:00
a.m. Among the issues to be addressed are 1) the school calendar, 2) the
budget for the coming year, and 3) the election of four (4) board
members. Please mark this on your calendars. We will send out the
formal call to assembly on April 29, as directed by the statutes of the
Association.
MESSAGE FROM DR. KETTERER – We
recently received the following communication from a parent:
"Discovery teaches responsibility to our children; we
should require the same of Discovery’s adults. We consider it unacceptable
for students to arrive late or for teachers to start class late or keep
students well past the allotted time of their sessions. We should hold
the General Assembly members to the same standard.”
I can only say that the school
administration and the Board of Directors agree with these sentiments. Discovery School was intentionally planned to
encourage the active participation by parents in the democratic governance of
the school. Without the community present in quorum we are unable to
plan or continue operations.
For this reason, the session
will begin as close as possible to 9:00 a.m.
We intend to close reports by 10:30 and begin acting on motions
thereafter. At that time, if we do not
have a quorum, we will close the session and set another meeting date and
time.
The reward of an “ice cream
day” will be offered to the elementary and secondary group with best attendance
resulting in a quorum.

for an orientation to the functions of Board membership.
KIDS ATHLETICS ACTIVITY – Our
fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh graders will be participating in a Kids’
Athletics activity on Wednesday, April 27, from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m at the
Palacio de los Deportes (UNAH). We will be working with Sunshine School and
Honors Academy. The cost of this activity is L.50.00 per student. Teachers who
will be going on this fieldtrip: Ms. Karen, Ms. Amy, Ms. Nidia, Ms. Lihn, Ms.
Marisela, Ms. Nora A., Ms. Tiffany, Ms, Norma, Ms. Yery and Ms. Carol. For the
organization of the teams, we are asking students to wear specific colored
t-shirts as follows:
Grade 4
- red t-shirt Grade
5 - blue t-shirt
Grade 6
- white t-shirt Grade
7 - yellow t-shirt
**Please
remind students to bring a cap, wear sunblock/sunscreen, bring a water bottle
and wear light clothes.
EARLY DISMISSAL AND HOLIDAY – This Friday, April 29 is an early dismissal day for our
students. We will be following P.M. schedule.
We want to remind parents that Monday, May 2 is a holiday. Classes
resume on Tuesday, May 3.
NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEKEND–
Please take note that this weekend (April 30 – May 2) is homework free for
secondary students. Early Childhood and Elementary only assign homework Monday
through Thursday.

PRE-ADMINISTRATION
SESSION FOR STUDENTS TAKING AP EXAMS
- We will have a pre-administration session to complete the first part of the
AP exam answer sheet(s). We will meet on Monday,
April 25, 2016 in the Secondary Building. This session will last
approximately 60 minutes. Please, make sure you pick up your child by 4:30. If your
child is a US citizen, he/she needs to bring his/her Social Security Number. We will need a pen, a No. 2 pencil, eraser,
and sharpener for this activity. THIS IS
A MANDATORY SESSION!!!
HONORS
BREAKFAST (SECONDARY STUDENTS ONLY) – The
school will be honoring students who have made the Honor Roll during the course
of the school year. We will be having an Honors Breakfast on Friday, May 13 @ 7:15 a.m. Personal
invitations will be sent home with the students.

ATTENDANCE – We would like to remind
parents that it is extremely important that your child arrives to school on
time EVERY DAY. By getting to school
on time, your child is able to organize his/her locker and backpack, turn in
all homework, and still have time to meet and greet his friends. When your
child is late to school, he come to class stressed out, interrupts the class,
and misses important information given by the teacher at the beginning of the
class. We strongly recommend your child arrives to school by 7:45 a.m. There is
a warning bell @ 7:55 and then classes begin promptly @ 8:00 a.m.

**Congratulations
to Juan Diego Caballero on his
admission to Stetson University in
Florida. Juan Diego was also awarded a superb scholarship in Stetson for
his academic excellence and the International
Ambassador Scholarship in University
of Kentucky. Way to go, Juan Diego!
**We are also
happy for Gabriel Rodriguez who was
recently admitted to UBC (University of
British Columbia). Well done, Gabriel!
RECYCLING CHALLENGE: Students keep bringing in your recyclable materials
(newspapers, magazines, notebooks, paper board boxes, cardboard, aluminum cans,
and plastic bottles) for the recycling challenge given by Arca de
Esperanzas. Remember that juice and milk boxes and Pringles-type cans
cannot be recycled due to being a pressed mixture of aluminum, plastic, and
paper. Thank you for continuing to support environmental
awareness. Classes that meet their challenge of bringing 10 lbs per
student will earn a cookie party!
SUMMER
CAMPS AT DISCOVERY SCHOOL - Just like last year, there will be two
summer camps in the month of June. Discovery Zone 7 will be a fun, artistic and
entertaining camp for children 3 to 9 years old. There will also be a
reinforcement camp for reading, writing and French for students in grades K-4.
Both camps will run from June 13 to July 1, with the same schedule (8:00 a.m.
to 12:00). Transportation is available at a small additional cost. If you or a
relative/friend is interested, more information can be given to you by Ms.
Carolina or at the accounting offices in school.
ECONOMICS
BAKE SALES– the third graders will be their conducting
their integrated Math/Social Studies bake sale on April 28. They will really
appreciate the support of fellow students as they conduct their economics
activity.

MENSAJE DE LA JUNTA DIRECTIVA – Favor recuerden
que tendremos una Asamblea General el día sábado 14 de mayo, a las 9:00 a.m.
Entre los temas a discutir están 1) el calendario escolar, 2) el presupuesto
para el próximo año, y 3) la elección de cuatro (4) miembros de la junta. Favor
marque la fecha en su calendario. Les enviaremos una convocatoria formal el 29
de abril, según lo dictaminan los estatutos de la Asociación.
MENSAJE DE DR. KETTERER – Recientemente recibimos
la siguiente comunicación de un padre:
“La
Escuela Discovery enseña responsabilidad a los niños; deberíamos requerir lo
mismo de los adultos de Discovery. Consideramos inaceptable que los alumnos
lleguen tarde o que los maestros empiecen la clase tarde o mantener a los
alumnos más tiempo que el programado en sus clases. Deberíamos mantener los
mismos estándares con los miembros de la Asamblea General.”
Solamente puedo decir que la administración de la
escuela y la Junta Directiva están de acuerdo con estos pensamientos. La
Escuela Discovery fue planificada intencionalmente para fomentar la participación
activa de los padres de familia en una gobernación democrática de la escuela.
Sin la presencia de la comunidad en quórum no podemos planificar o
continuar en operaciones.
Por esta razón, la reunión comenzará lo más cerca
posible de las 9:00 a.m. Tenemos la intención de cerrar reportes a las 10:30 y
comenzar a recibir las mociones después. A esa hora, si no tenemos quórum,
suspenderemos la reunión y estableceremos otra hora y fecha para realizarla.
Se ofrecerá la recompensa de “un día de ice cream”
a los grupos de primaria y secundaria con la mejor asistencia que resulte en quórum.

ACTIVIDADES ATLETICAS PARA LOS NIÑOS – Nuestros alumnos de cuarto, quinto , sexto y séptimo
grado estarán participando en Actividades Atléticas el día miércoles 27 de
abril, de 8:00 a 11:30 a.m. en el Palacio de los Deportes (UNAH). Estaremos
trabajando con la Sunshine School y la Honors Academy. El costo para esta actividad
es de L.50.00 por alumno. Los maestros que asistirán a la actividad son: Ms. Karen, Ms. Amy, Ms. Nidia, Ms. Lihn,

gorra, use bloqueador, lleve una botella de agua, y vista ropa ligera.
SALIDA TEMPRANA Y FERIADO – Este viernes 29 de abril es día de salida temprana
para nuestros alumnos. Seguiremos un horario vespertino. Queremos recordarles a
los padres que el día lunes 2 de mayo es feriado. Regresamos a clases el martes
3 de mayo.
FIN DE SEMANA SIN TAREAS (SECUNDARIA) – Favor tomar nota que este fin de semana (30 de
abril – 2 de mayo) los alumnos de secundaria no tendrán tarea. Pre-escolar y
primaria solamente asigna tareas de lunes a jueves.

SESION PREVIA A LA ADMINISTRACIÓN DE
LOS EXÁMENES AP – Estaremos
realizando una sesión previa a la administración de los exámenes AP para
completar la primera parte de la hoja de respuestas de los exámenes. Nos
reuniremos el día lunes 25 de abril,
2016; en el edificio de secundaria. Esta sesión durará aproximadamente 60
minutos. Favor asegúrese de recoger a su hijo a las 4:30 p.m. Si su hijo es
ciudadano americano deberá traer su número de seguro social. Necesitaremos un
lápiz tinta, un lápiz carbón No.2, borrador, y un sacapuntas para esta

ASISTENCIA DIARIA – Queremos recordarles a los padres que es
extremadamente importante que sus hijos lleguen a la escuela a tiempo TODOS LOS DÍAS. Al llegar a tiempo, le
da tiempo a su hijo(a) a organizar su casillero y mochila, entregar las tareas,
y todavía tener tiempo para saludar a sus amigos. Cuando su hijo(a) llega
tarde, llega a las clases estresado, interrumpe la clase, y se pierde de información
importante que los maestros dan al inicio de la clase. Firmemente les
recomendamos que sus hijos lleguen a la escuela antes de las 7:45 a.m. Suena
una campana de aviso a las 7:55 a.m. y las clases comienzan a las 8:00 a.m. en
punto.

**Felicitamos a Juan Diego Caballero
por su admisión a Stetson University en
Florida. Juan Diego fue galardonado con una muy buena beca en Stetson por
su desempeño académico y en la International
Ambassador Scholarship en la Universidad
de Kentucky. Muy bien hecho Juan Diego!
**También estamos felices por Gabriel
Rodriguez quien recientemente fue admitido a UBC (University of British Columbia). Felicidades Gabriel!
RETO DE RECICLAJE: Alumnos continúan trayendo su material de
reciclaje (periódicos, revistas, libretas, cajas de cartón, cartón, latas de
aluminio, y botellas de plástico) para el reto de reciclaje realizado por Arca
de Esperanzas. Recuerde que las cajas de jugo, cajas de leche, latas de
pringles o del mismo tipo no pueden ser recicladas debido a que tienen una
mezcla presionada de aluminio, plástico y papel. Gracias por su continuo apoyo
a la concientización ambiental. El grado que cumpla con el reto de traer 10
libras por alumno ganará una fiesta de galletas!
CAMPAMENTOS DE VERANO EN LA ESCUELA DISCOVERY – Así como el año pasado, tendremos dos campamentos
en el mes de junio. El Discovery Fun 7 que será un campamento divertido,
artístico y mucho entretenimiento para los niños de 3 a 9 años. También
tendremos el campamento de refuerzo para lectura, escritura y francés para alumnos
de K – 4 grado. Ambos campamentos se realizarán del 13 de junio al 1 de julio,
al mismo horario (8:00 a.m. a 12:00). Tendremos transporte disponible con un
costo adicional. Si usted o un familiar/o amigo está interesado, Ms. Carolina o
en la oficina de contabilidad le proporcionarán mayor información.
VENTA DE PASTELES, CLASE DE ECONOMIA – Los alumnos de tercer grado estarán realizando su
venta de pasteles de las clases de Math/Social
Studies, el 21 y 28 de abril. Ellos agradecerán el apoyo de sus compañeros de
escuela mientras realizan su actividad de economía.
