SECURITY NOTICE
To tighten our security at the school, we have prepared new vehicle stickers. Each sticker is numbered to identify its owner, and each sticker must be picked up from Carolina at the Reception and signed for. You also need to bring in and record your vehicle license tag number with Carolina. The school provides the first sticker for each family at no charge. If additional stickers are needed, they may be purchased from Carolina for L.30 each. The sticker should be placed in the lower left-hand corner of the front windshield.
We will allow next week, September 26-30, for parents and teachers to come to the Receptionist, Carolina, and sign for their stickers. For those teachers or staff members who use motorcycles or scooters, they also must carry a sticker to allow admission to the campus.
Beginning on Tuesday, October 4, (because Monday the 3rd is a holiday):
NO VEHICLE WILL BE ALLOWED ON CAMPUS WITHOUT A STICKER UNLESS IT HAS BEEN APPROVED BY THE ADMINISTRATION.
Therefore, if you do not have a sticker on your vehicle or authorization from the Administration, you will be instructed to park outside the gate and walk onto the campus. Last minute authorization should be avoided because if the Administration is not available to authorize your entry, you will have to park outside and walk in. The guards have been instructed that there is to be no exception to this procedure.
This measure is essential for us to keep the campus and our children safe.
Please plan a time this week to come to the school and receive your sticker. All old stickers should be removed from your vehicles.
If you have any suggestions for other ways we can improve our security, please contact the Administration.

MEDICAL CARE FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF: Beginning Monday, September 26, 2011,
WE HAVE A FULL-TIME NURSE AT DISCOVERY SCHOOL !
With the help of the DPTO, we have contracted with OSM for the on-site nurse from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, plus attendance at all Discovery School events. In addition to the nurse on campus, we will also have Ambulance Services for serious or life-threatening injuries or illnesses, and first aid training for staff.
In the past, the school has provided emergency medical service through Rescate. However, they have reorganized under new management, and the services they are now offering do not meet the most urgent needs of the school. We have been in negotiations with health care providers in an effort to secure the best possible service for our students and staff, and are very pleased with our new arrangement with OSM.
Special thanks to Dr. Eduardo Retes and the DPTO for their help and support with this project. This will all be funded in part by the school and in part by the DPTO, which will rely on parent help in raising the funds necessary.
ACCIDENT INSURANCE (optional): We have also negotiated an OPTIONAL accident policy with Ficohsa that parents and staff may purchase. This policy provides coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and costs only L.260 per year, per person, for L.40,000 of accidental coverage. If the limit of L.40,000 is reached for one person, you can pay another L. 260 to receive another L.40,000 of accidental coverage.
We need a minimum of 42 individuals to sign up in order for us to qualify for this insurance. If you are interested, please fill out a form in the Finance Office and pay L.260 for each person you want to cover. The deadline for submitting the information and payment is Friday, September 30.
UN DAY COMING UP!!! MESSAGE FROM THE DPTO - It has become a tradition to celebrate the United Nations Day at our school. In the true international spirit of the Discovery school, we would like to invite you all to participate in this grand cultural celebration on October 28, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. We hope that all nationalities represented in our diverse community will be able to display a table for the students to learn about cultural and historical aspects of their countries through various maps, books, souvenirs, games, fact sheets, samples of traditional food or anything else that would mark our visit to this country. As a part of the celebration, we would like to invite performers to represent various countries, so if you know of anyone who can offer our audience some traditional dances or songs, please send us their contact information. Please let us know if you are interested in helping us celebrate the UN Day and educate our students about your country, and we will send you more detailed information and put people from the same countries together so that you can combine your efforts. AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES - Our first After School Activity session began last week, but your child can still sign up this week by contacting Mr. Victor or Ms. Carol. We ask that parents be on time picking up their children after each activity (4:00 p.m.)
MAP TESTING: MAP testing concludes this week for all students in grades 2-10.
CELEBRATING WITH STUDENTS: Last week four of the students from Mr. Taylor’s Grade 8 Language Arts classes who excelled with their writing were invited to read their essays for Ms. Giles. Nicolle Hernandez, Nicole Fiallos, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Nicolle Rojas shared their essays on “Sibling Rivalry” and then discussed the essays with Ms. Giles. Well done, students!
UNIVERSITY VISIT – University of New Orleans will be here to talk to our Juniors and Seniors on Thursday, October 6, from 2:00-2:45 p.m. Parents are welcome to come.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEDNESDAYS – Following SACS recommendations, we will devote the last Wednesday of each month to Professional development.. Students will be dismissed at 11:45 am on the last Wednesday of each month, starting in October, and our teachers will participate in different professional growth opportunities that respond to our curricular needs. A schedule of dates will be posted in the Administration School blog.

NOTIFICACION DE SEGURIDAD
Para reforzar nuestra seguridad en la escuela, hemos preparado nuevas calcomanías de vehículos. Cada calcomanía tiene un número para identificar a su propietario, y cada calcomanía debe ser recogida donde Carolina en la recepción y se debe firmar de recibido. También necesita traer para nuestros registros el número de la placa de su vehículo, y entregarlo a Carolina. La escuela provee la primera calcomanía a cada familia sin cargo alguno. Si necesita de calcomanías adicionales, pueden comprarlas con Carolina por L.30.00 cada una. La calcomanía debe ser colocada en la parte baja del lado izquierdo del vidrio frontal.
Permitiremos la próxima semana, del 26 al 30 de septiembre, a padres y maestros venir a la recepción, con Carolina, y firmar por sus calcomanías. Para todos aquellos maestros o personal que usan motocicletas o scooters, también deben llevar la calcomanía para permitirles el acceso a las instalaciones.
A partir del martes 4 de octubre, (porque el lunes 3 es feriado):
A NINGUN VEHICULO LE SERA PERMITIDO EL INGRESO A LAS INSTALACIONES SIN LA CALCOMANÍA A MENOS QUE LO APRUEBE LA ADMINISTRACION.
Por lo tanto si usted no tiene una calcomanía en su vehiculo o autorización de la Administración, se le pedirá que se estacione afuera del portón y entre caminando a la escuela. Las autorizaciones de último minuto serán evitadas debido a que si la Administración no esta disponible para autorizar su entrada, usted tendrá que estacionarse afuera y entrar caminando. Los guardias tienen instrucciones de que no hay excepciones para este procedimiento.
Esta medida es necesaria para que podamos mantener nuestras instalaciones y a nuestros niños seguros.
Por favor planifique un momento de esta semana para venir a la escuela y recibir su calcomanía. Todas las calcomanías viejas deben ser quitadas de sus vehículos.
Si tiene alguna sugerencia sobre otras formas en que podamos mejorar nuestra seguridad, por favor comuníquese con la Administración.

CUIDADOS MEDICOS PARA ALUMNOS Y PERSONAL: A partir del lunes 26 de septiembre del 2011
TENEMOS UNA ENFERMERA A TIEMPO COMPLETO EN LA ESCUELA DISCOVERY!
Con la ayuda del DPTO, hemos contratado con OSM una enfermera local desde las 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. de lunes a viernes, además de asistir a todos los eventos de la Escuela Discovery. Adicionalmente a la enfermera en la escuela, también tendremos servicios de Ambulancia para casos de riesgo y enfermedades serias, y entrenamiento de primeros auxilios al personal.
En el pasado, la escuela ha proveído servicios médicos de emergencia a través de Rescate Medico Movil. Sin embargo, ellos se han reestructurado bajo una nueva administración, y los servicios que ahora ofrecen no cubren con nuestras necesidades más urgentes en la escuela. Hemos estado en negociaciones con proveedores de servicios médicos en un esfuerzo de proporcionar el mejor servicio posible para nuestros alumnos y personal, y estamos muy contentos con nuestro nuevo arreglo con OSM.
Gracias especiales al Dr. Eduardo Retes y al DPTO por su ayuda y apoyo con este proyecto. Esto será financiado en parte por la escuela y en parte por el DPTO, quienes contarán con la ayuda de los padres en la recaudación de los fondos necesarios.
SEGURO DE ACCIDENTES (opcional): También hemos negociado una póliza de accidentes OPCIONAL con Ficohsa que los padres y el personal pueden adquirir. Esta póliza proporciona cobertura de 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana y un costo de L.260 anual, por persona, por L.40,000 de cobertura de accidentes. Si el límite de L.40,000 es alcanzado por una persona, usted puede pagar otros L.260.00 para recibir otros L.40,000 de cobertura de accidentes.
Necesitamos un mínimo de 42 individuos registrados de modo que podamos calificar para este seguro. Si usted está interesado, favor llene un formulario en la Oficina de Administración y pague L.260 por cada persona que desee cubrir. La fecha límite para entregar esta información y entregar el pago será el viernes 30 de septiembre.
EL DÍA DE NACIONES UNIDAS ESTA CERCA!!! MENSAJE DEL DPTO – Se ha convertido en una tradición el celebrar el Día de las Naciones Unidas en nuestra escuela. En el verdadero espíritu internacional de la Escuela Discovery, nos gustaría invitarlos a todos a participar en la celebración de este gran evento cultural el 28 de octubre del 2011 desde las 8:00 a.m. a 12:00 del mediodía. Esperamos que todas las nacionalidades representadas en nuestra muy diversa comunidad puedan exhibir en una mesa para que los alumnos aprendan acerca de los aspectos culturales e históricos de sus países por medio de mapas, libros, recuerdos, hojas de datos, muestras de comida tradicional o cualquier cosa que marque la visita a este país. Como parte de la celebración, nos gustaría invitar actores a representar varios países, así que si conoce a alguien que pueda audicionar algunos cantos o bailes tradicionales, favor mándenos su información de contacto. Favor déjenos saber si está interesados en ayudar a la celebración del Día de las Naciones Unidas y educar a nuestros alumnos acerca de su país, y le enviaremos información detallada y pondremos personas del mismo país juntos para que puedan combinar esfuerzo. ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES – Nuestra primera sesión de Actividades Extracurriculares inicio la semana pasada, pero su hijo todavía puede inscribirse esta semana contactando a Mr. Victor o Ms. Carol. Pedimos a los padres a estar puntuales al recoger a sus hijos después de cada actividad (4:00 p.m.)
EXÁMENES MAP: Los exámenes MAP finalizan esta semana para todos los alumnos de 2 a 10 grado.
CELEBRANDO CON ALUMNOS: La semana pasada cuatro de nuestros alumnos sobresalientes de 8vo grado de la clase de Language Arts de Mr. Taylor fueron invitados a leer sus ensayos para Ms. Giles. Nicolle Hernandez, Nicole Fiallos, Gabriel Rodriguez y Nicolle Rojas compartieron sus ensayos en “Rivalidad de Hermanos” y discutieron el ensayo con Ms. Giles. Bien hecho, alumnos!
VISITA DE UNIVERSIDAD - La Universidad de New Orleans estará aquí para hablar con nuestros Juniors y Seniors el jueves 6 de octubre, desde las 2:00-2:45 p.m. Se invita a los padres asistir.
DESARROLLO PROFESIONAL LOS MIÉRCOLES – Continuando con las recomendaciones de SACS, dedicaremos el ultimo miércoles de cada mes a Desarrollo Profesional.. Los alumnos serán despachados a las 11:45 a.m. el ultimo miércoles de cada mes, empezando en octubre, y nuestros maestros participarán en diferentes oportunidades de crecimiento profesional que respondan nuestras necesidades curriculares, Un calendario de fechas será publicado en el blog de la Administración de la Escuela.
