DISCOVERY SCHOOL MONDAY MEMO FOR PARENTS 8/13/12

WELCOME TO THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR – On behalf of the Board of Directors, Faculty and Staff, we want to welcome our new and returning families to the 2012-2013 School Year. We are very excited about this new school year, as we continue to grow and move forward as a leading school in the country. 
 
The teachers and staff have been busy getting everything ready to ensure a successful start to the school year. We have experienced a 12% growth in our student enrollment this year, and that necessitated opening another Grade 3 and another Grade 5 classroom. Thus, 80% of our elementary classrooms were moved over the summer. We also moved Spanish Social Studies with Ms. Liana to the Spanish building, and enlarged the PE room and the secondary Spanish Social Studies room (Mr. Sergio’s room) in that building. 
 
Our teachers and staff have shown a true Discovery School spirit in their flexibility, resourcefulness, spirit of cooperation, and positive energy during the renovations and moving process. 
 
We sincerely thank you for entrusting your child’s education to us. We will do our very best to justify that trust, and we feel confident that this will be a successful school year for our students
 
So, to our new families, WELCOME; and to our returning families, WELCOME BACK. We are glad you are part of our Discovery School family.   
 

WELCOME BACK ASSEMBLY FOR STUDENTS – On Thursday morning for Elementary students, and on Friday morning for Secondary students, Ms. Ivonne Casco, Guidance Counselor, organized a Welcome Back Assembly for the students. She was joined on Tuesday by Mr. Kjell Fenn, High School Language Arts/Literature teacher, as they unrolled the Secondary Theme for the 2012-2013 school year and encouraged students to stamp out mediocrity and work “Towards Excellence”.




DISCOVERY SCHOOL STUDENT CHOIR – A sincere and well-earned “CONGRATULATIONS” to our Choir members, their parents, our Choir teachers, Ms. Pamela Cruz and Ms. Norma Lopez, and our guest accompanist, Mr David Raudales. In July, they traveled to San Francisco, California, for the Golden Gate Choir Festival. Preparation for this event, which is Discovery School’s first international choir participation, took many hours of practice during the last school year, as well as a great deal of work during the month of June. While in San Francisco, our choir rehearsed, practiced, and performed with students from 18 other choirs. From all accounts, it was a rewarding and positive experience for all of our Discovery family who were involved in the trip. 




At the end of the week’s activities, the Discovery School was awarded a bronze medal for their performance. We are so proud of the way our students represented the school, and it would not have been possible without the support and encouragement of their parents. We are grateful for all you did to make this possible.




MORE CHOIR NEWS – Our Discovery School Choir has recently been invited to join with the National Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance of Carmena Burana at the end of this month. This is being presented as part of the 10th Anniversary Celebration of the Philharmonic, and we are excited about the chance this gives our students to stretch their repertoire again and perform on stage at the Manuel Bonilla National Theatre with professional musicians. Once again, our nationally, and now internationally, recognized Choir will make us proud.




OPEN HOUSE- Our annual Open House is scheduled for this Thursday, August 16, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. Our teachers will be in their classrooms ready to greet parents a few minutes before the scheduled time, as we may have parents who will be showing up earlier before they head to work. The teacher presentations will be short and to the point, highlighting the most important aspects of their classes (i.e. grading policy, contact information, etc.) Please feel free to schedule individual and more specific conferences with the teachers for a later day and time if you have individual concerns to discuss about your child. Some of our teachers have classes first period, so we ask your cooperation in not holding them back so they can start instruction on time. The Open House spans both the first and second class periods, in order to give you the chance to meet with more teachers.  A list of when the teachers are available will be posted in the cafeteria, and school staff will be on hand to guide you if you need help. We look forward to seeing you!




AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES FAIR – The school is currently working on a plan to revamp our After School Activities program in an effort to meet the needs of our students. During our Open House there will be several providers for After School Activities for parents to explore options available in the community for their children. There will be information regarding swimming, martial arts, tennis, dance, art, photography, and more. Please stop by their tables and see if this is something that you and your children are interested in. 




ESL AND SSL – The school has hired Ms. Pia Girbal to do the Second Language Instruction this school year (English as a Second Language – ESL; and Spanish as a Second Language – SSL). We welcome Ms. Pia to the school staff!  Assessments and diagnosis will be done this week, and letters will be sent home by the end of the week. Our goal is to begin Second Language instruction on Monday, August 20.  If you have any questions, please let us know. 




BUS SERVICES - We are happy to have all of our buses nearly full this year. Last year, for the first time, we offered half-time bus services for parents who only wanted their children to ride in either the morning or the afternoon, but not both. We are currently trying to maintain that service; however, if our numbers increase to the point where we can fill those buses with full-time riders, we will ask the   parents of part-time riders if they want to either (a) convert to full-time, or (b) transport their children both ways themselves. In order to maximize our financial resources, we will only offer the part-time bus privileges if there is unused space on the bus.  We appreciate your understanding of our need to maximize our resources. If you have any questions, please contact Reina Salgado in the Finance Office.




We also want to thank you for your patience as the bus drivers become familiar with the new routes. It will help get everyone to school on time and home as early as possible if you will please have your children ready in the morning when the bus arrives, and make sure someone is available to meet the bus in the afternoon. We monitor the buses on a daily basis to see how long the routes are taking; your diligence in helping us is very much appreciated by all of the bus riders.




SENIOR ENTRANCE – The Senior Class has requested permission to make their grand entrance to school. This will take place on Monday, August 13 during the Middle and High School Snack Recess. All teachers and students are invited to come to the cafeteria and attend. This should not last longer than recess time.

BIENVENIDOS AL AÑO ESCOLAR 2012-2013 – En nombre de la Junta Directiva y el Personal docente y administrativo, queremos darles la bienvenida a las familias que regresan y a las familias nuevas, al año escolar 2012-2013. Nos entusiasma mucho este nuevo comienzo año escolar, en el cual continuamos creciendo y avanzando como escuela líder en el país.




Los maestros y el personal administrativo han estado ocupados preparando todo de manera que tengamos un exitoso comienzo de año escolar. Hemos experimentado un crecimiento del 12% en la matricula de alumnos en este año, para lo cual hemos necesitado abrir otra sección de 3er grado y de 5to grado. Por lo tanto, el 80% de las aulas de primaria fueron reubicadas durante el verano. También hemos movido el aula de Estudios Sociales en Español con Ms. Liana al edificio de español, y se han expandido las aulas de Educ. Física y Estudios Sociales en Español  (aula de Mr. Sergio) de este edificio.




Nuestro personal docente y administrativo ha mostrado un verdadero espíritu escolar por su flexibilidad, disposición, espíritu de cooperación, y energía positiva durante las renovaciones y el proceso de mudanza.




Sinceramente les agradecemos por confiarnos la educación de sus hijos. Haremos lo mejor que podamos para justificar esa confianza, y estamos seguros que este será un año de muchos éxitos para nuestros alumnos.




Asi que, a las familias nuevas BIENVENIDOS; y las familias que regresan BIENVENIDOS DE NUEVO.

ASAMBLEAS DE BIENVENIDA PARA LOS ALUMNOS – Ms. Ivonne, nuestra Consejera Estudiantil organizo  asambleas de bienvenida para los alumnos, el jueves en la mañana para los alumnos de primaria, y el viernes en la mañana para los alumnos de secundaria. El martes la acompaño Mr. Kjell Fenn, Maestro de Lenguaje/Literatura, quienes juntos abordaron el Tema de Secundaria para este año escolar 2012-2013 y animaron a los alumnos a dejar a un lado la mediocridad y trabajar “Hacia la Excelencia”.




EL CORO DE LA ESCUELA DISCOVERY – Unas sinceras y bien merecidas “FELICITACIONES” a los miembros del Coro, sus padres, las maestras del Coro Ms. Pamela Cruz y Ms. Norma López, y a Mr. David Raudales, invitado especial. En el mes de julio, ellos viajaron a San Francisco, California, para el Festival de Coros Golden Gate. La preparación de este evento, el cual era la primera participación internacional de la Escuela Discovery, tomó muchas horas de práctica del año pasado, así como mucho trabajo durante el mes de junio. En su estadía en San Francisco, el coro ensayó, practicó, y se presentó con alumnos de otros 18 coros. En general, fue una experiencia muy satisfactoria y positiva para todos los miembros de la familia Discovery que estuvieron involucrados.




Al final de las actividades de la semana, la Escuela Discovery recibió la medalla de bronce  por su actuación. Estamos muy orgullosos de la manera en que los alumnos representaron a la escuela, lo que no hubiera sido posible sin el apoyo y animo de sus padres. Agradecemos todo lo que hicieron para que esto fuera posible.




MAS NOTICIAS DEL CORO – Nuestro Coro de la Escuela Discovery recientemente ha sido invitado a acompañar en su presentación a la Orquesta Filarmonica Nacional de Carmen Burana a finales de este mes. Esta presentación es parte de la celebración del 10mo. Aniversario de la Filarmonica, y nos entusiasma mucho la oportunidad que esto les da a los alumnos para extender su repertorio otra vez y presentarse en el escenario del Teatro Manuel Bonilla con músicos profesionales. Una vez más, nacionalmente, y ahora internacionalmente, el reconocimiento del Coro nos trae mucho orgullo.




OPEN HOUSE – El Open House anual está programado para este jueves 16 de agosto, desde las 7:30 a 9:00 a.m. Los maestros estarán en sus aulas listos para saludar a los padres unos minutos antes del tiempo programado, ya que así recibiremos padres que quieran venir más temprano antes de llegar a sus trabajos. Las presentaciones de los maestros serán cortas y precisas, acentuando los aspectos más importantes de sus clases (por ejemplo políticas para calificar, información de contacto, etc.) Por favor siéntase en la libertad de programar conferencias individuales y mas especificas con los maestros para otro día y hora si tiene preocupaciones particulares que quiera hablar con respecto a sus hijos. Algunos de los maestros tienen que dar clases durante el primer periodo asi que les pedimos no los retengan y ellos puedan comenzar su instrucción a tiempo. El Open House se puede prolongar durante el primer y segundo periodo para que pueda tener la oportunidad de reunirse con mas maestros. Una lista de cuando los maestros estarán disponibles será publicada en la cafeteria, y el personal de oficina estará disponible para ayudarles en caso que los necesiten. Esperamos verles!




FERIA DE ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES – La escuela se encuentra actualmente trabajando en un plan para mejorar nuestro programa de Actividades Extracurriculares como un esfuerzo para cumplir las necesidades de nuestros alumnos. Durante el Open House tendremos a varios proveedores de estas actividades para los padres que deseen explorar las opciones disponibles para sus hijos en la comunidad. Tendremos información relacionada a natación, artes marciales, tenis, baile, arte, fotografía, y mas. Favor pase por sus mesas y vea si encuentra algo que le interese a sus hijos.




ESL Y SSL (INGLES COMO SEGUNDA LENGUA Y ESPAÑOL COMO SEGUNDA LENGUA) – La escuela ha contratado a Ms. Pia Girbal para que lleve las clases de Ingles como segunda lengua (ESL) y Español como Segunda Lengua (SSL). Le damos la bienvenida a Ms. Pia al personal de la escuela! Las evaluaciones y diagnosis se harán esta semana, las cartas se enviarán al final de esta semana. Nuestra meta es comenzar la instrucción de Segunda Lengua el lunes 20 de agosto.

SERVICIO DE BUS -  Estamos felices que nuestros buses están casi llenos este año. El año pasado, por primera vez, estuvimos ofreciendo servicio de medio bus para aquellos padres que solamente quieren que sus hijos sean transportados en la mañana o en la tarde, pero no ambos. Estamos tratando de mantener ese servicio; sin embargo, si los números aumentan al punto que podemos llenar los cupos con servicio completo, les pediremos a los padres con medio servicio que (a) convertirse a tiempo completo, o (b) transportar a sus hijos ellos mismos. Para poder maximizar nuestros recursos financieros, necesitamos ofrecer privilegios de medio bus si hubiera espacios libres en el. Agradecemos su comprensión de nuestra necesidad de maximizar nuestros recursos. Si tiene alguna consulta, favor contacte a Ms. Reina Salgado en la Oficina de Finanzas.




También queremos agradecer su paciencia mientras los conductores de los buses se familiarizan con las nuevas rutas. Por favor tenga a sus hijos listos en la mañana cuando en bus llegue, y asegúrese que se encuentre alguien para recibirlos en la tarde, para ayudar que todos lleguen a tiempo a la escuela y temprano a casa tanto como sea posible.




ENTRADA DE LOS SENIORS -  La clase de los Seniors ha solicitado permiso para hacer su entrada triunfal a la escuela. Esto tendrá lugar el lunes 13 de agosto durante el receso de Secundaria. Todos los alumnos y maestros están invitados a asistir a la Cafeteria. No tomará más tiempo que el asignado al receso.
