THIS IS A RATHER LENGTHY MONDAY MEMO, WITH LOTS OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION, SO PLEASE NOTE ANYTHING THAT APPLIES TO YOUR CHILD OR YOUR FAMILY.
We begin this Monday Memo saluting the accomplishments of our wonderful students!
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CHOIR – Our Choir members continue to dazzle us! Their performance at the Manuel Bonilla National Theater with the Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir on Saturday evening and Sunday Morning was SUPERB! Thank you to the teachers, parents and students who supported our Choir and the Honduran Arts by attending the performances. Special Congratulations and thanks to Ms. Pamela and Ms. Norma for their continued dedication to making our choir and school shine. We are looking forward to more opportunities for our students to work with members of the philharmonic orchestra and choir throughout the school year.
STUDENT RECOGNITION – We want to congratulate two of our High School Students who recently participated in prestigious international events.
Ø Tiffany Molina participated in July in the Faculty of Medicine’s Youth Summer Program at the University of Toronto in Canada. Tiffany successfully completed three modules in Pharamacology and Toxicology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics. Tiffany is preparing herself to study medicine after she graduates from Discovery in June 2013.
Ø Eduardo Retes participated last week as part of the juvenile team at the International Baseball Amateur Federation event in Chihuahua, Mexico. Over 16 countries from all over the world participated in this 10-day event, and Eduardo distinguished himself as one of the top pitchers in the competition.
Congratulations to all of our outstanding students who challenge themselves to attain their goals. Your hard work and dedication to excellence make your parents, your country and your school very proud!
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEDNESDAY – Please remember that this Wednesday, August 29 is a Professional Development Wednesday, and that This is an AM schedule day. We ask our parents to be prompt in picking up students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m. their students since our teachers need to meet for professional training and will not be available to supervise students after 12:00 noon. The buses will run at 12:00 p.m.
MINUTA FRIDAY – The Language Arts Festival Committee, which is in charge of organizing the ABSH Language Arts Festival in February 2013 has begun the preparations for this event. To raise funds for this event, there will be MotoMinutas (slushies) on sale during on Friday during lunch time for L25.
HONDURAN INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS – Please take note that on Monday, September 3 there will be a 20 minute assembly at 8:00 a.m. in the gym for Honduran Flag Day. Please also take note that on Thursday, September 13 the Independence Day Celebrations will begin at 9:00 a.m. More information will be provided by the organizing committee soon.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES – Our After School Activities (ASA) program begins next Tuesday, September 4. The sign up sheets will be distributed on Wednesday and need to be back by Friday, August 31. We ask parents that will be signing students up for the activities plan accordingly to promptly pick them up at 4:00 p.m. We will run an activity bus to the areas of the city that are near the school; however, as in the past, we will not run that bus to El Hatillo, Santa Lucia or other areas outside the main part of the city. If you have any questions about the activity bus, please contact Reina in the Finance Office (dsadministration@discoveryschool.edu.hn or 2221-7790) Please note that any children who do not ride the bus and are not picked up by 4:15 p.m. will be with Ms. Giles and the parent or driver will need to come to the top floor of the Administration Building to pick up the child.
MAP ON-SITE TEACHER TRAINING - In our constant quest for growth and excellence, and in following with the recommendations of our 2010 SACS Accreditation Team, our faculty has embraced numerous projects and training to raise the academic level of our curriculum, to incorporate the proven teaching methods into our lessons, to stay current with international teaching practices, and to improve the assessment, reporting, and documentation systems for our students and parents.
Our teachers have been using the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) as a tool for not only validating our school curriculum, but also for adapting levels of instruction, differentiating for our diverse student population, and maximizing student learning in the classroom. On Thursday, September 6 and Friday, September 7 we have arranged for our teachers to participate in an on-site training with a MAP specialist brought down from Northwest Education Association (NWEA). For this training, all Elementary teachers some of the Secondary teachers will attend. Because of that,
there will be NO school for grades Nursery to Grade 5 on Thursday and Friday, September 6 and 7.
Our teachers are making the necessary accommodations in the delivery of the curriculum to make sure that this does not affect the instruction of our students. As only a few of the secondary teachers will attend the training,
the Middle and High School students will have classes as normal on Thursday and Friday, September 6 and 7.

CAR STICKERS - In order to keep our campus secure, we require that all vehicles that enter have a current 2012-2013 school sticker affixed to the left front windshield. Those are available with Carolina, Receptionist. The first one is free; additional stickers cost lmp. 30. Please remove last year's sticker and attach the new one. Please help us ensure the security of these stickers and make sure that no one has access to them except you. Thanks for your help and cooperation.
SPANISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (SSL) - This year we have hired Ms. Pia Girbal to teach all of our Spanish as a Second Language lessons. Ms. Pia has been a substitute at the school in the past, and we are very pleased to now have her on staff. FELICIDADES A NUESTRO CORO – Los miembros del coro nos continúan asombrando! Su presentación en el Teatro Manuel Bonilla con la Orquesta y el Coro de la Filarmonica, del sábado en la noche y el domingo en la mañana estuvo FABULOSA! Agradecemos a los maestros, padres y alumnos que apoyaron al Coro y las Artes Hondureñas al asistir a las presentaciones. Felicitaciones especiales y mucho agradecimiento a Ms. Pamela y Ms. Norma por su continua dedicación al hacer brillar a nuestro Coro y nuestra escuela. Esperamos tener más oportunidades para que nuestros alumnos trabajen con los miembros de la Orquesta y Coro de la Filarmonica durante el año escolar.
RECONOCIMIENTO PARA ALUMNOS – Queremos felicitar a dos de nuestros alumnos de Secundaria que recientemente participaron en prestigiosos eventos internacionales.
Ø Tiffany Molina participó en el mes de julio, en el Programa de Verano Juvenil de la Facultad de Medicina en la Universidad de Toronto en Canadá. Exitosamente completó tres módulos de Farmacología y Toxicología, Microbiología, y Biología Molecular y Genética. Tiffany se está preparando para estudiar medicina después que se gradúe de la Discovery en junio del 2013.
Ø Eduardo Retes participó la semana pasada como parte del equipo juvenil en un evento con la Federación Internacional de Baseball Aficionado en Chihuahua, México. Más de 16 países de todo el mundo participaron en este evento de 10 días, y Eduardo se distinguió como uno de los mejores lanzadores de la competencia.
Felicidades a todos nuestros sobresalientes alumnos que se han propuesto alcanzar sus metas. Su arduo trabajo y dedicación a la excelencia hace sentir a sus padres, su país y a su escuela muy orgullosos!
MIÉRCOLES DE DESARROLLO PROFESIONAL – Por favor recuerde que este miércoles 29 de agosto es un Miércoles de Desarrollo Profesional, y que este será un día con horario AM. Les solicitamos a nuestros padres que sean puntuales al recoger a sus hijos, los alumnos serán despachados a las 11:45 a.m. ya que nuestros maestros necesitan reunirse para capacitación profesional y no estarán disponibles para supervisar alumnos después de las 12:00 del mediodía. Los buses se irán a las 12:00 del mediodía.
VIERNES DE MINUTAS – El Comité de Festival de las Artes/Lenguaje, quien son los responsables de organizar el Festival de Artes/Lenguaje ABSH en febrero de 2013 ha comenzado con los preparativos. Para recaudar fondos para el evento, habrán MotoMinutas (raspados) a la venta el día viernes durante la hora de almuerzo por L.25.
CELEBRACIONES DEL DÍA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA DE HONDURAS – Favor tome nota que el lunes 3 de septiembre tendremos una asamblea a las 8:00 a.m. en el gimnasio por el Día de la Bandera Hondureña. También tome nota que el jueves 13 de septiembre las celebraciones del Día de la Independencia comenzarán a las 9:00a.m. Próximamente el comité organizador proveerá mayor información.
ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES – Nuestro programa de Actividades Extracurriculares (ASA) comienza el próximo martes 4 de septiembre. Las hojas para registrarse serán distribuidas este miércoles y necesitamos que las manden de regreso antes del viernes 31 de agosto. Les pedimos a los padres que registrarán a sus hijos en las actividades que deben recogerlos a las 4:00 p.m. en punto. Tendremos un bus para las actividades en las áreas de la ciudad que están cerca de la escuela; sin embargo, como en el pasado, no tendremos bus hacia el Hatillo, Santa Lucia u otras áreas fuera de la parte principal de la ciudad. Si tiene alguna pregunta acerca del bus de las actividades, favor comuníquese con Ms. Reina en la Oficina de Finanzas (dsadministration@discoveryschool.edu.hn o 2221-7790) Favor tome nota que cualquier niño que no tome el bus y no sea recogido a las 4:15 p.m. estará con Ms. Giles y el padre o el conductor deberá subir al piso de arriba del edificio de Administración para recogerlo.
ENTRENAMIENTO DE MAESTROS MAP ON-SITE – En nuestra búsqueda constante de crecimiento y de la excelencia, y siguiendo con las recomendaciones de nuestro Equipo de Acreditaciones de SACS 2010, nuestro personal docente se ha embarcado en numerosos proyectos y entrenamientos para elevar el nivel académico del currículo, para incorporar los métodos de enseñanza probados en nuestras lecciones, permanecer actualizados con las practicas internacionales de enseñanza, y mejorar la evaluación, reportes, y sistemas de documentación para nuestros alumnos y padres.
Nuestros maestros han estado utilizando el MAP, Medidas de Progreso Académico (siglas en ingles) como instrumento no solamente para validar nuestro currículo escolar, sino también para adaptar los niveles de instrucción, diferenciación por nuestra diversidad estudiantil, y maximizar el aprendizaje estudiantil en el aula de clases. El jueves y viernes, 6 y 7 de septiembre hemos organizado que nuestros maestros participen en un entrenamiento con un especialista en MAP, quien viene de la Asociación Educativa del Noroeste (NWEA). Para este entrenamiento, todos los maestros de Primaria y algunos de los maestros de Secundaria asistirán. Por lo tanto,
No habrán clases para los grados de Nursery hasta 5to Grado, los días jueves y viernes, 6 y 7 de septiembre.
Los maestros están haciendo los arreglos necesarios en el cumplimiento del contenido de manera que esto no afecte las enseñanzas de los alumnos. Como solo algunos de los maestros de secundaria estarán asistiendo a la capacitación,
Los alumnos de secundaria tendrán clases en horario normal el jueves y viernes, 6 y 7 de septiembre.

CALCOMANIAS DE VEHICULOS – De modo que podamos mantener nuestra escuela segura, es necesario que todos los vehículos que ingresen tengan una calcomanía 2012-2013 actualizada que sea ubicada en la parte izquierda del vidrio frontal. Estas se encuentran disponibles con Carolina, Recepcionista. La primera es gratis; las calcomanías adicionales tienen un valor de L.30. Por favor remueva la calcomanía del año pasado y coloque la nueva. Ayúdenos a velar por la seguridad de estas calcomanías de modo que nadie tenga acceso a ellas sino solamente usted. ESPAÑOL COMO SEGUNDA LENGUA (SSL) – Este año hemos contratado a Ms. Pia Girbal para enseñar las lecciones de Español como Segunda Lengua. Ms. Pia ha sido maestra sustituta anteriormente en la escuela, y nos alegramos que ahora sea parte del personal.
