HONDURAN INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS –
Please take note that on Monday, September 3 there will be a 20 minute assembly at 8:00 a.m. in the gym for Honduran Flag Day. During the ceremony we will sing the Honduran National Anthem, hang the Honduran flag, learn about the important symbols of the country, and have the pledge to the flag.

IMPORTANT NOTE: THE TYPICAL BREAKFASTS MUST BE ORGANIZED BY EACH HOMEROOM TEACHER AND THEIR CLASSROOM PARENTS
In addition to cultural presentations, there will be games for the elementary children.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES – After school activities begin this week (Tuesday, September 4). A note was sent home last week to let all parents know about the activities that will take place the whole year. Please read the note that was sent last week carefully - each activity is different, offered by different sponsors and it takes place at different times during the school year. We ask parents that will be signing students up for the activities to plan accordingly to promptly pick them up at 4:00 p.m. We will run an activity bus to the areas of the city that are near the school; however, as in the past, we will not run that bus to El Hatillo, Santa Lucia or other areas outside the main part of the city. If you have any questions about the activity bus, please contact Ms. Reina in the Finance Office (dsadministration@discoveryschool.edu.hn or 2221-7790) Please note that any children who do not ride the bus and are not picked up by 4:15 p.m. will be with Ms. Giles and the parent or driver will need to come to the top floor of the Administration Building to pick up the child. DPTO MEETING THIS WEEK - The Discovery Parent Teacher Organization is holding its first meeting on Wednesday, September 5 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. in the Library. The agenda items include: general information about the DPTO, activities for the school year, budget, and organizing the United Nations Day. A light morning snack will be provided. MAP Training
One of the items on the School Improvement Plan for the 2012-2013 school year that was required by our Accreditation Team is:
“Further Develop the use of the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) data to improve student learning.”
To meet that goal, we have arranged for a trainer from the Northwest Education Association to come to Tegucigalpa and provide training for our teachers.
For this training, all Elementary teachers and some of the Secondary teachers will attend. Because of that,
There will be NO school for Nursery to Grade 5 on Thursday and Friday, September 6 and 7.
Our teachers are making the necessary accommodations in the delivery of the curriculum to make sure that this does not affect the learning of our students. As only a few of the secondary teachers will attend the training,
the Middle and High School students will have classes as normal on Thursday and Friday, September 6 and 7.

- Bentley University Representative from Boston visited our Junior and Senior classes last Monday. The students had a chance to ask about student profiles and resumés. They also received answers to several questions regarding the admissions process.
- Monday September 3 - Oglethorpe University representative will be at school from 11:45 to 12:20 at the library. We encourage parents to come and join us and listen to Mr. Perroune talk to students about filling out college applications.
- September 13 - Juniors and Seniors will attend the CIS University Fair hosted by the American School. 34 university representatives will be there to talk about the different programs their universities have to offer. The Fair starts at 11:30 a.m. and it lasts about 2 hours. Students need to dress professionally for this event, and parents need to arrange to pick them up at the American School at 1:00 p.m.
- New Secondary School Parents - If you are a new Secondary school parent please call the main office (2221-7790) to make an appointment with Mrs. Ivonne Casco to help you and your student transition smoothly.
- Medical Brigades - Cape Cares partners with Discovery to take medical assistance to rural communities near Tegucigalpa. We need parent and student volunteers to translate for doctors and help with the paperwork done at the pre-clinic. Please email Mrs, Ivonne Casco if you are interested and want more information. Brigades will take place in San Marcos October 21 to 28; and Los Encinitos November 10 to 17.
NUTRITIONAL TALK – Ms. Erika Corletto is organizing a Nutrition Talk for our Discovery School parents, sponsored by Pediasure. This talk will be offered by Eda Flefil, a nutritionist that will be talking about the benefits of a well-balanced diet. Please join us on Friday, September 21 at 2:30 p.m. in our school library.
Ms. Josie Quintana (Art Teacher) is seeking a used television with USB plug in capability. If anyone has an extra or used 22” and above flat screen TV for sale for around $125 if it is in good condition, please let Ms Quintana know. She is looking to purchase a used one to keep in her classrom to show her art slide shows and power point presentations to her classes. Thanks.

CELEBRACIONES DEL DIA DE LA INDEPENDENCIA DE HONDURAS – Favor tome nota que el lunes 3 de septiembre tendremos una asamblea de 20 minutos a las 8:00 a.m. en el gimnasio por el Día de la Bandera Hondureña. Durante la ceremonia cantaremos el Himno Nacional, se izará la bandera, aprenderemos acerca de la importancia de los símbolos patrios, y haremos la juramentación a la bandera.

ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES – Las actividades extracurriculares comienzan esta semana (martes 4 de septiembre). Una nota se envío a casa la semana pasada a todos los padres para que conozcan las actividades que se llevarán a cabo todo el año. Por favor lea la nota cuidadosamente – cada actividad es diferente, ofrecidas por diferentes patrocinadores y son impartidas en diferentes momentos del año escolar. Les pedimos a los padres que estarán inscribiendo a sus hijos en las actividades que planifiquen de manera que puedan recoger a sus hijos a las 4:00 p.m. en punto. Tendremos un bus para después de las actividades para las áreas cercanas a la escuela; sin embargo, como anteriormente, no tendremos bus hacia el Hatillo, Santa Lucia u otras áreas fuera de la zona central de la ciudad. REUNION DEL DPTO ESTA SEMANA – La Organización de Padres y Maestros de Discovery tendrá su primera reunión el miércoles 5 de septiembre desde las 7:30 a las 8:15 a.m. en la Biblioteca. Los temas de la agenda incluyen: información general del DPTO, actividades del año escolar, presupuesto, y organización del Día de las Naciones Unidas. Se ofrecerá una merienda liviana. Capacitación de MAP
Uno de los temas requeridos por el Equipo de Acreditaciones sobre Plan de Mejoramiento de la Escuela para el año escolar 2012-2013 es:
“Desarrollo más profundo en el uso de la información de Medidas de Progreso Académico (MAP) para mejorar el aprendizaje de los alumnos.”
Para cumplir la meta, hemos programado que un capacitador de la Asociación Educacional de Noroeste venga a Tegucigalpa y provea una capacitación a nuestros maestros.
Para esta capacitación, asistirán todos los maestros de Primaria y algunos maestros de Secundaria. Por lo tanto,
NO habrá clases desde Nursery hasta 5to Grado los días jueves y viernes, 6 y 7 de septiembre.
Nuestros maestros están haciendo las adecuaciones necesarias en sus currículos y asegurarnos que esto no afecte el aprendizaje de los alumnos. Como solo algunos de los maestros de Secundaria asistirán a la capacitación.
Los alumnos de Secundaria tendrán clases de manera normal los días jueves y viernes, 6 y 7 de septiembre.

- Un Representante de la Universidad de Bentley de Boston visitó a nuestros Juniors y Seniors el lunes pasado. Los alumnos tuvieron la oportunidad de preguntar acerca de los perfiles estudiantiles y currículos. También recibieron respuestas concernientes a los procesos de admisión.
- Lunes 3 de septiembre - un representante de la Universidad de Oglethorpe estará en la escuela desde las 11:45 a las 12:20 en la Biblioteca. Animamos a los padres que vengan y nos acompañen para escuchar a Mr. Perroune aconsejar a los alumnos acerca de completar aplicaciones a universidades.
- 13 de septiembre - Los Juniors y Seniors asistirán a la Feria de Universidades CIS ofrecida por la Escuela Americana. 34 representantes de universidades estarán presentes para hablarles de los diferentes programas que ofrecen. La feria comienza a las 11.30 a.m. y dura alrededor de dos horas. Los alumnos deben vestir de manera profesional para este evento, y los padres deben hacer los arreglos para recogerlos en la Escuela Americana a la 1:00 p.m.
- Padres Nuevos en Secundaria – Si usted en un padre nuevo en Secundaria por favor llame a la oficina principal (2221-7790) para hacer una cita con Ms. Ivonne Casco quien le ayudará a usted y a su hijo tener una transición más fácil.
- Brigadas Médicas – Cape Cares se asocia con Discovery para llevar asistencia médica a comunidades rurales cerca de Tegucigalpa. Necesitamos alumnos y padres voluntarios para traducirles a los doctores y ayudar con el papeleo en la pre-clínica. Favor comuníquese con Ms. Ivonne Casco si está interesado y desea más información. Las brigadas serán en San Marcos del 21 al 28 de octubre; y el Los Encinitos del 10 al 17 de noviembre.
CHARLA DE NUTRICION – Sra. Erika Corletto está organizando una Charla Nutricional para los padres de la Escuela Discovery, patrocinada por Pediasure. Esta charla la ofrecerá la Dra. Eda Flefil, nutricionista quien les hablará de los beneficios de una dieta bien balanceada. Por favor acompáñenos el viernes 21 de septiembre a las 2:30 p.m. en la biblioteca de la escuela.
Ms. Josie Quintana (Maestra de Arte) está buscando un aparato de televisión con conector de USB. Si alguien tiene en venta un televisor extra o usado de 22” o más, con pantalla plana de alrededor $125 y está en buenas condiciones, por favor notifíqueselo a Ms. Quintana. Ella quiere comprar uno usado para mantenerlo en su aula de clases y poder mostrar las diapositivas de arte y presentaciones de power point a sus alumnos. Gracias.
