CONGRATULATIONS 12th GRADE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS FOR AN AMAZING DIA DEL NIÑO CELEBRATION! The Elementary students had a great time with all the activities that you organized for them. Teachers have commented on how well organized and fun everything was. And special thanks for celebrating Dia del Niño with our support personnel’s children on Saturday. It was truly an amazing and generous celebration.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEDNESDAY – Don’t forget that since this is the last Wednesday of the month, students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m. to allow staff to meet together for Professional Development. Teachers are unavailable to supervise students after 12:00 noon, so please arrange to have your child picked up on time.
MINUTA FRIDAY - To raise funds for the ABSH Language Arts Festival in February 2013, the Language Arts Festival Committe will be once again selling Minutas (slushies) this Friday, September 28 during lunch time for L25 apiece. Please support this activity by letting your child bring money to purchase minutas on this day.
MIDTERMS – Please make sure that you have signed and returned the Mid-Term reports that were sent home last week. If you would like to have a conference, please contact the school office to make an appointment.
MAP testing: continues this week. Please remind and motivate your child to do his/her best. The data these assessments yield is very valuable in meeting your child’s individual learning needs.
CASA KINICH ACTIVITY for Tuesday, September 25 - Casa Kinich or ¨House of the Sun¨ is the only child-based learning center located near Mayan ruins. Casa Kínich has welcomed over 60,000 visitors, young and old alike, from around the world. Entrance to this child-based learning center is free for children and adults pay $1.00. They are undertaking a project geared towards the public schools in the Copan area to help raise awareness of the need to protect the scarlet macaw and its habitat. The museum director, Londin Velasquez, will be visiting our school on Tuesday to talk about Copan and especially about the scarlet macaw. We will meet in the Library--students must bring 2 pieces of construction paper -red, green, orange - scissors, glue stick and markers for a craft after the presentation. The schedule for this activity is the following:
1st period – Grades K -3
2nd period – Grades 4-7 and the AP environmental class
MEDICAL BRIGADES - Cape Cares partners with Discovery to take medical assistance to rural communities near Tegucigalpa. We need parent and student volunteers who could translate for doctors and help with the paper work done at the pre-clinic. Please email Mrs, Ivonne Casco (icasco@discoveryschool.edu.hn) if you are interested and want more information. Brigades will take place in San Marcos October 21 to 28; and Los Encinitos November 10 to 17.
DPTO MEETINGS – The DPTO has begun working for our UN Day celebration that will take place in October. They are meeting all Wednesdays in the school Cafeteria, from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. and invite all parents to join and help make this a memoreable event. Volunteers Needed for the following tasks.
- Entertainment Coordinator: He/she is responsible for contacting local entertainment groups and asking for them to participate in the UN Day. Groups include but are not limited to the Discovery school choir, local Honduran ballet folklorico groups, and the Garifuna Ballet Folkloric group.
- Publicity Coordinator: He/she is responsible for designing posters, signs, and sending out notices to inform the Discovery school community about UN Day.
- Country Table Coordinator: He/she is responsible for contacting all parents to participate in UN Day and maintaining communication with participants.

FELICIDADES ALUMNOS Y MAESTROS DE 12VO GRADO POR UNA MARAVILLOSA CELEBRACIÓN DEL DÍA DEL NIÑO! Los alumnos de primaria se divirtieron muchísimo con todas las actividades que prepararon para ellos. Los maestros han comentado lo bien organizado y divertido que estuvo todo. Además un especial agradecimiento por celebrarles el Día del Niño a los niños de nuestro personal de apoyo el pasado sábado. Fue una celebración asombrosa y muy generosa.
MIÉRCOLES DE DESARROLLO PROFESIONAL – No olviden que este miércoles es el último del mes, por lo tanto los alumnos saldrán de clases a las 11:45 a.m. para permitir que nuestro personal docente se reúna para sus reuniones de Desarrollo Profesional. No habrá maestros disponibles para supervisar alumnos después de las 12:00 m., así que por favor haga los arreglos necesarios para recogerlos a tiempo.
VIERNES DE MINUTA – Para recolectar fondos para el Festival de Lenguaje ABSH en febrero 2013, el Comité del Festival de Lenguaje estará una vez más vendiendo Minutas este viernes 28 de septiembre durante la hora de almuerzo, a L.25 cada una. Favor apoye esta actividad permitiendo que su hijo(a) traiga dinero para comprar minutas ese día.
REPORTES DE PROGRESO DE MEDIO PERIODO – Asegúrese que ha firmado y enviado de regreso a la escuela los Reportes de Progreso de Medio Período que se enviaron la semana pasada. Si desea una conferencia, favor comuníquese con la oficina para concertar una cita con el/los maestro(s) lo más pronto posible.
MAP: Las evaluaciones continúan esta semana. Favor motive a su(s) hijo(s) que hagan su mejor esfuerzo en esta evaluación. Los resultados obtenidos será información muy valiosa para conocer las necesidades de aprendizaje de cada estudiante.
ACTIVIDAD DE CASA KINICH para el martes 25 de septiembre – la Casa Kinich o “Casa del Sol” es el único centro de aprendizaje basado en la niñez ubicado cerca de las Ruinas Mayas. La Casa Kinich ha recibido a más de 60,000 visitantes, jóvenes y adultos, de todas partes del mundo. La entrada a este centro de aprendizaje basado en la niñez es gratis para los niños y los adultos pagan $1.00. Están participando en un proyecto enfocado hacia las escuelas públicas en el área de Copan para ayudar a concientizar la necesidad de proteger a la guacamaya escarlata y su hábitat. El director del museo, Londin Velásquez, estará visitando nuestra escuela esta martes para hablar acerca de Copan y especialmente de la guacamaya escarlata. Nos reuniremos en la biblioteca—los alumnos deben traer 2 páginas de papel construcción – rojo, verde o anaranjado- tijeras, pegamento en barra y marcadores para una manualidad que realizaran después de la presentación. El horario para esta actividad es el siguiente:

2do período – Grados de 4 a 7 y la clase AP de Medioambiente
Brigadas Médicas – Cape Cares se asocia con Discovery para llevar asistencia médica a comunidades rurales cerca de Tegucigalpa. REUNION DEL DPTO – El DPTO ha comenzado a trabajar en la celebración del Día de las Naciones Unidas que se realiza en octubre. Se están reuniendo todos los miércoles en la Cafeteria de la escuela, desde las 7:45 a 8:15 a.m. e invitan a todos los padres que les acompañen y ayuden a hacer este evento muy memorable. Se necesitan voluntarios para las siguientes tareas:
- Coordinador de entretenimiento: Él/ella es responsable de contactar grupos de entretenimiento local y solicitarles que participen en el Día de Naciones Unidas. Los grupos pueden ser, aunque no solamente, el Coro de la Escuela Discovery, Ballet Hondureño local de danza folklórica, y grupos folklóricos de Ballet Garífuna.
- Coordinador de Publicidad: Él/ella es responsable de diseñar posters, rótulos, de enviar notificaciones para informar a la comunidad de la Discovery sobre la celebración.
- Coordinador de Mesa de País: Él/ella es responsable de contactar a todos los padres para participar en la celebración y mantener comunicación con los participantes.
