AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES – This is the fourth week of our After School Activities program for the second quarter. Please be sure to pick your child up at 4:00 p.m.
MIDTERM – Midterm Reports for the second quarter were distributed to students last Wednesday, Novemember 21. Please sign and return the report to your child’s teacher.
CHRISTMAS BASKETS FOR OUR SUPPORT PERSONNEL – Christmas is the season to open our hearts and share with those around us that need it most. It has been a tradition at Discovery School for students to come together and contribute in assembling baskets of goods for our support personnel. We are asking for your cooperation in sending the following:
Pre Kinder and 6th grade students 1 5-lb bag of beans
Kinder and 7th grade students 1 5-lb bag of rice
1st grade and 8th grade students 1 5-lb bag of sugar
2nd grade and 9th grade students 1 bottle or 2 bags of oil, 2 boxes of margarine, OR
3rd grade and 10th grade students 1 4lb-bag of MASECA
4th grade and 11th grade students 3 lbs of spaghetti (six packages) OR 1 bag of coffee
5th grade and 12th grade students 4 packages of tomato paste
Please feel free to send any additional goodies that you want to share with our devoted staff, such as canned goods, instant soups, cookies and crackers, or anything else that does not require refrigeration. Please send these items no later than Friday, December 14th. Your participation will be deeply appreciated.
SONG FEST PREPARATION - The Discovery School Song Fest (to be held on Tuesday, December 18 at 6:00 p.m.) is around the corner! This year, the Music Department is making a very special celebration as an extension of their Music classes. The children will sing and dance beautiful Disney or famous movie themes. The Music teachers need your cooperation by providing dresses for your child:
NURSERY AND PK - Song to perform: “It’s A Small World After All”. The children need to dress up as: The Princess, Mickey, Minnie, Pluto or any other Disney character.
KINDER- Song to perform: “Somewhere Out There” from “Fievel An American Tale”
The children need to dress up as a Mouse with pajamas, tale, and big mouse ears. A small pillow will be also needed (bring it the day of the performance).
FIRST GRADE - Song to perform: “Heigh Ho” from “Snow White”. The boys need to dress up as a dwarf with beard and big dwarf hat and a hammer or shovel. The girls need to wear a dress with a diamond or other gem tiara to simulate a jewel.
SECOND GRADE - Song to perform: “You’ll Bring Honor to us all” from “Mulan”. The children need to dress up as a Chinese girl with a fan or Chinese boy.
THIRD GRADE - Song to perform: “So Long, Farewell” from “The Sound of Music”.
The girls need to wear a formal dress and the boys formal pants, and shirt with a tie.
FOURTH GRADE - Song to perform: “Chim Chimney” from “Mary Poppins”.
The children need to wear blue jeans, black shirt and black cap. They also need a broomstick.
FIFTH GRADE - Will present “We are off to Visit the Wizard of Oz” from the movie
“The Wizard of Oz”. The children need to dress up as one of the movie characters (as it has already been assigned in class).
SIXTH GRADE - Will sing “Hakuna Matata” from the movie “The Lion King”. Students need to dress up as one of the movie characters (as it has already been assigned in class).
SEVENTH GRADE - Will play on the guitar the main theme of the movie “Star Wars”. Students need to dress up as one of the movie characters (as it has already been assigned in class).
EIGHTH GRADE - will sing and dance the song “We Go Together” from the movie “Grease”. Girls need to use a long skirt, a blouse and black shoes with white socks; Boys need to wear blue jeans, white T-Shirt and a leather black jacket (if possible), resembling the 70’s fashion.
NINTH GRADE - Will perform with a “Stomp Choreography”. Students will wear jeans and a yellow, red or blue T-Shirt.
NPH GIVING TREE- Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) is an international organization that takes in abandoned and orphaned children, providing a home and education. Discovery School teachers have played an important role in visiting a group of children from the orphanage and this year will hope to provide shoes and socks for each of these children. A giving tree has been set up on the second floor of the secondary building. Tree tags have the children's size information. Items need to be returned to school by Tuesday, December 4th. Secondary homeroom teachers have provided information on the Giving Tree to their students. Elementary students are welcome to join in the giving. For more information, see Christina Agurcia. SECONDARY SEMESTER EXAMS - Students from grade 9 – 12 will be having semester exams (Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, and Spanish only) beginning December 12 – December 14. The last day to introduce a new topic and to assign deadlines for projects, quizzes, tests, etc. is Friday, December 7. Students will begin their exams at 8:00 am and will finish at 12:30. They can leave after they are done with their exams. More information will be provided next week.
CHOIR PERFORMANCE - The Discovery Choir will sing at an Awards Ceremony at the U.S. Embassy on December 7 at 10:30 a.m.
ADVANCED ANNUAL CONFERENCE IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Ms. Giles is attending the annual Conference in Atlanta that is hosted by AdvancED, the umbrella organization for our accrediting agency, SACS. In her absence, please refer all matters to her admin team.

PREPARACIONES PARA EL FESTIVAL DE LA CANCION - El Festival de la Canción de la Escuela Discovery (que se llevará a cabo el martes 18 de diciembre a las 6:00 p.m.) está a la vuelta de la esquina! Este año el departamento de Música está realizando una celebración especial como extensión de su clase de Música. Los niños cantarán y bailarán bellas canciones de Disney o temas de películas famosas. Los maestros de música necesitan su colaboración proporcionando el vestuario para sus hijos:
NURSERY Y PREKINDER - Canción que presentarán: “It´s a Small World After All”. Los niños necesitan vestirse de: Princesas, Mickey, Minnie, Pluto o cualquier otro personaje de Disney.
KINDER - Canción que presentarán: “Somewhere Out There” de “Fievel An American Tale” Los niños necesitan vestirse como un Ratón en pijamas, cola, y orejas grandes de ratón. Una almohada pequeña también será necesaria (traerla el día de la presentación).
PRIMER GRADO – Canción que presentarán: “Heigh Ho” de “Blanca Nieves”. Los niños necesitan vestirse como enanos con barba y un sombrero grande de enano y un martillo o pala. Las niñas necesitan vestirse con un vestido con un diamante u otro accesorio como tiara que simulen una joya.
SEGUNDO GRADO – Canción a presentar: “You’ll Bring Honor to us all” de “Mulan”. Los niños necesitan vestirse como niñas chinas con un abanico o niños chinos.
TERCER GRADO – Canción a presentar: “So Long, Farewell” de “La Novicia Rebelde”. Las niñas necesitan vestir con vestidos formales y los varones con pantalones formales, camisa con corbata.
CUARTO GRADO – Canción a presentar: “Chim Chimney” de “Mary Poppins”. Los niños necesitan vestir de jeans azules, camisa negra y gorra negra. También necesitan un palo de escoba.
QUINTO GRADO – Presentarán: “We are off to Visit the Wizard of Oz” de la película
“El Mago de Oz”. Los niños deberán vestir como alguno de los personajes de la película (como ya ha sido asignado en clase).
SEXTO GRADO – Cantarán “Hakuna Matata” de la película “El Rey Leon”. Los alumnos deberán vestir como algún personaje de la película (como ya ha sido asignado en clase).
SEPTIMO GRADO - Ejecutarán en la guitarra el tema principal de la película “La Guerra de las Galaxias”. Los alumnos deberán vestir como algún personaje de la película (como ya ha sido asignado en clase).
OCTAVO GRADO – Cantarán y bailaran la canción “We Go Together” de la película “Vaselina”. Las niñas deberán usar falda larga, una blusa y zapatos negros con calcetines blancos; los varones necesitan usar jeans azules, camiseta blanca y chumpa de cuero negra (si es posible), mostrando la moda de los años 70.
El vestuario debe estar listo para el jueves 13 de diciembre para el Ensayo General con vestuario!
ARBOL DE DONACION NPH – Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) es una organización internacional que alberga a niños abandonados y huérfanos, proporcionándoles casa y educación. Los maestros de la Escuela Discovery han jugado un papel importante visitando a un grupo de los niños del orfanato y este año esperan proporcionarles zapatos y calcetines a cada niño. Un árbol de donaciones se ha puesto en el segundo piso del edificio de secundaria. Etiquetas en el árbol tienen la información del tamaño del niño. Los artículos deben ser traídos a la escuela antes del martes 4 de diciembre. Los maestros guía de secundaria han proporcionado información del árbol de donaciones a sus alumnos. EXÁMENES SEMESTRALES DE SECUNDARIA – Los alumnos de los grados de 9-12 tendrán exámenes semestrales (Literatura, Estudios Sociales, Matemáticas, Ciencias, y Español únicamente) el 12 al 14 de diciembre. El ultimo día para enseñar un nuevo tema y asignar fechas límite a proyectos, pruebas, exámenes, etc. es el viernes 7 de diciembre. Los alumnos comenzarán sus exámenes a las 8:00 a.m. y terminarán a las 12:30. Pueden salir cuando hayan terminado sus exámenes. Se dará mayor información la próxima semana.
PRESENTACION DEL CORO – El Coro de la Escuela Discovery cantará en la Ceremonia de Premiación en la Embajada Americana el 7 de diciembre a las 10:30 a.m.
CONFERENCIA ANUAL ADVANCED EN ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Ms. Giles está asistiendo a la Conferencia Anual en Atlanta que es patrocinada por AdvancED la organización madre de nuestra agencia de acreditación, SACS. En su ausencia, favor comunicar todo asunto a su equipo administrativo.
