DISCOVERY WOLF ‘PUPS’ – For the first
time, our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students will participate in a track
and field event this week, which has been organized by the bilingual schools of
Tegucigalpa. The event will take place at the Villa Olimpica on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 – 11:00 a.m. Ms. Gigi, Ms. Sophia, Ms. Vivian,
Ms. Carol, Mr. Victor and Ms. Nora will accompany the students to supervise and
help in whatever way they are needed. We have requested that OSM, our health
care provider, send an ambulance to the Via Olimpica on each of those days in
case their services are needed.
ABSH MODEL UNITED NATIONS – The
following students will travel this week to La Ceiba to participate in the annual Model United Nations
event: Santiago A., Paulina L., Catalina
R., Gabriel R., Luis B., Katarina F., Victoria G., Catalina C., Krisna V., and
Sachi K. These students have been working hard and planning for this event all
year with Mr. Kjell Fenn, who will accompany them.
CURRICULUM CONSULTANT – Ms. Judi Fenton
will arrive in Tegucigalpa on Friday, April 19. She will be in school the
following week to work with faculty on reviewing and revising the curriculum,
as needed. Part of the discussion will be the Common Core Curriculum that has
been adopted by 46 states in the United States. The Admin team will follow her
suggestions in setting up opportunities for the staff to meet with her. Ms.
Fenton will return in September to follow up on the work that is started during
this week.
SCHOOL PICTURES: If you did not

DPTO Fun Run and Olympic Games
-Proceeds to buy TECHNOLOGY for the school. On Saturday morning, April
20, the DPTO will once again host the annual Fun Run for parents and students
of all age. This year, it will be even better, as we are beginning the event
with an Olympic torch run, followed by the Fun Run, Parent/Student/Teacher
competitions (such as basketball,
volleyball, soccer), archery, and Greek games created and hosted by the
Grade 5 students. You can either pick up the pledge form from Carolina
(Receptionist) or click here
to access the form. Just print and fill out the Pledge Form, collect the money,
and bring both with you to the Fun Run.
BINGO returns to Discovery! - Proceeds
to buy TECHNOLOGY for the school. Please mark your

2013-2014 SCHOOL CALENDAR: Click
here to view the proposed Calendar for the 2013-2014 school year. In
drafting this Calendar, we have considered recommendations of parents,
especially concerning half days and interruptions to the school week. The new Calendar has incorporated the
following:
- The Open House will be held the day before
school starts, August 7, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon—for parents only,
without their children. We will establish a schedule that will enable the
parents to visit with more teachers than they have been able to do in the
past.
- In
order to minimize the number of shortened
days, we have combined
half days with Professional Development afternoons wherever possible.
Thus, in October, U.N. Day
and Professional Development are combined on October 30; in March, half-day
conferences and Professional Development are combined on March 20; in
April, the Professional Development was moved to coincide with a half-day on May 1, preceding the Labor Day holiday
- We
moved the Discovery
Workshop, which is usually held on the Friday preceding Thanksgiving
in November, to November 8, with the hope that this will not need to be
cancelled due to the elections held later in that month
- We
moved the Science Fair
(Secondary) to December
instead of February as it has been done in the past, in order to have it
concluded before the Winter Break and make it a more concise and less
drawn-out activity
- We
moved the Semester exams in December for Grades 9-12 and
May for Grades 8-12 to maximize student time in class and eliminate some
of the wasted days at the end of the school year

Assembly of parents on May 16, it would be helpful to have your comments in

BUS EXPECTATIONS AND CONSEQUENCES: If your
child rides the school bus, please remind them of the expectations and
consequences that were provided to parents and students at the start of the
school year. They are stated
here as a reminder:
- Students are expected to
enter the bus, sit down,
buckle the seatbelt, and remain seated. To safeguard the students,
they are not allowed to leave the bus once they have gotten on.
- Students need to remain in their seats and use
seatbelts for the entire trip. They are not to be standing until the
bus comes to a complete stop at their own house.
- Students should keep their arms and legs
inside the bus at all
times, and not open or close the windows unless instructed to do so by the
nanny
- Shouting is not allowed on the bus. Students need
to speak using a quiet
'indoor' voice and talk
only with the student seated beside them. It is distracting for the bus
driver when the students become too loud, and it creates an unsafe
condition on the bus
- Students are expected to treat other students, the bus
nanny, and the driver with respect. Name-calling,
foul language, or obscene gestures, shoving, kicking, and teasing are not
allowed on the bus.
- Students should not
throw garbage, papers, or any other objects in or outside of the bus
- No food or drink is allowed on the bus
Consequences:
- First Offense:
Warning and reminder of the rules
- Second Offense: Conference
with Transportation Supervisor, and parents notified
- Third Offense: Loss
of bus privileges for one to three days; parents notified; notation in
student's file
- Fourth Offense: Loss of bus
privileges for 10 days up to the remainder of the school year; parents
notified; notation in student's file
ENROLLMENT DRIVE: Last year's Enrollment Drive brought in 14
new students to the school and helped account for the 13% increase in
enrollment that we have experienced this year. The Board of Directors has
elected to repeat the Enrollment Drive again for the 2013-2014 school year.
1. PERIOD
OF THE ENROLLMENT DRIVE: This
opportunity is from April 16 until August 31, 2013, and is not retroactive.
2.
CONDITIONS:
A. Discovery Parent must personally introduce
a potential new student and parents to Ms. Giles at the beginning of the
admission process (this must be someone who has not already requested
information on admission)
B. The school will follow the usual
admission process in determining whether the student will be admitted
C. The cash benefit will apply only if the
new student is actually admitted for the 2013-2014 school year.
3. CASH
BENEFIT FOR DISCOVERY SCHOOL PARENTS AND TEACHERS:
During the enrollment drive period, for each new
student that a family introduces to Ms. Giles and who is thereafter admitted
after meeting all of our admission requirements, the sponsoring parent or
teacher will receive a cash bonus in the amount of 5% of the tuition
(not capital fee) that the new student actually pays during the 2013-2014
school year.
4.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: All new
students are required to meet the admission requirements that are already
established. If a student applies and is not admitted, no bonus will be paid.
5.
ORGANIZATIONS: This offer applies
to individuals who pay their own tuition and does not apply to organizations.
6.
UNFORESEEN COMPLICATIONS: The
Board reserves the right to discontinue the Enrollment Drive at any time if
there are any unforeseen complications for the school.
**NOTE: If a
class is or becomes full, Discovery School reserves the right to put a new
applicant on a waiting list. In that case, the bonus would not be paid unless
the child is admitted during the 2013-2014 school year.
WHY DISCOVERY SCHOOL? -- Talking points for Promoting

COST: The
research shows that when compared with other top schools in Tegucigalpa,
Discovery is NOT more expensive. When our one-time capital fee is compared to
paying a yearly matricula, and when other fees such as uniforms, gym fees, book

The money that our parents pay goes to education. It is not used for any person’s personal

SECONDARY ACADEMIC PROGRAM: The academic program in our Middle School and
High School are rigorous and college preparatory. Our goal is to prepare

(AP) program provides courses that are taught at the university level and in
many cases leads to a student earning college credit while still in High
School. Our Math, Language Arts, and Spanish programs in the High School are
superior.

“LOBITOS” CACHORROS DE DISCOVERY – Por primera vez, nuestros alumnos de Pre-Kinder y
Kinder participaran en un evento de atletismo esta semana, el cual ha sido
organizado por las escuelas bilingües de Tegucigalpa. El evento se realiza en
la Villa Olimpica los días martes, miércoles y jueves, desde las 8:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Ms. Gigi, Ms. Sophia, Ms. Vivian, Ms. Carol, Mr. Victor y Ms. Nora acompañaran
a los alumnos para supervisar y asistir en lo que sea necesario. Hemos solicitado

CONSULTOR CURRICULAR - Ms. Judi Fenton
llegará a Tegucigalpa el viernes 19 de abril. Estará en la escuela la siguiente
semana para trabajar con el personal docente en la revisión del currículo escolar,
según sea necesario. Parte del trabajo será el Common Core Curriculum (Currículo
Básico) que ha sido adoptado por 46 estados en Estados Unidos. El equipo
administrativo seguirá sus sugerencias en el establecimiento de oportunidades
para que el personal se reúna con ella. Ms. Fenton regresará en septiembre para
darle seguimiento al trabajo que comenzará en esta semana.

CALENDARIO ESCOLAR 2013-2014: haga click aquí Click here para ver el Calendario propuesto para el
año escolar 2013-2014. Cuando se realiza este calendario, hemos considerado las
recomendaciones de los padres, especialmente concernientes a las salidas
tempranas e interrupciones en la semana escolar. El nuevo calendario tiene
incorporado lo siguiente:
- El Open House que se
realizará el día antes que comiencen las clases, el 7 de agosto, desde las
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 m.- solamente para padres, sin sus hijos.
Estableceremos un horario que permita a los padres visitar mas maestros de
lo que anteriormente ha sido posible.
- Para minimizar el número de días
cortos, hemos combinado los días cortos con las tardes de Desarrollo
Profesional en la medida de lo posible. Sin embargo, en octubre, el Día de
las Naciones Unidas y Desarrollo Profesional están combinados el 30 de
octubre; en marzo, las conferencias de medio-día y Desarrollo Profesional están
combinados el 20 de marzo; en abril, el Desarrollo Profesional fue
trasladado para coincidir con el medio-día del 1 de mayo, seguido del
feriado del Día del Trabajo.
- Hemos trasladado el Taller
de Discovery, el cual normalmente se realiza el viernes antes de Acción
de Gracias en noviembre, al 8 de noviembre, con la esperanza de que no sea
necesario cancelarlo debido a las elecciones que se realizarán más
adelante ese mes.
- Hemos trasladado la Feria
de Ciencias (Secundaria) a diciembre en lugar de febrero como se ha hecho
en el pasado, de modo que ya haya finalizado para el Feriado de Diciembre
y hacerlo una actividad más concisa y menos prolongada.
- Hemos trasladado los Exámenes
Semestrales a diciembre para 9-12 grados y mayo para 8-12 grados para maximizar el tiempo en el aula de
clases y eliminar algunos de los días perdidos al final del año escolar.

aprobado en la Asamblea General de Padres el 16 de mayo, seria de mucha ayuda saber

LINEAMIENTOS Y CONSECUENCIAS DEL BUS: Si su hijo utiliza el bus, por favor recuérdele los lineamientos
y consecuencias que fueron indicados a los padres y alumnos al principio del
año escolar. Los detallaremos a continuación como un recordatorio:
- Se espera que los alumnos entren al bus, se sienten, abrochen su cinturón y permanezcan sentados. Para
asegurar a los alumnos, no se les permite bajarse una vez que hayan
abordado.
- Los alumnos necesitan permanecer
en sus asientos y usar su cinturón todo el camino. No deben pararse hasta
que el bus se detenga por completo en su casa.
- Los alumnos deben mantener sus brazos y piernas adentro del bus
en todo momento, y no abrir o cerrar las ventanas a menos que sea indicado
por la niñera.
- Gritar en el bus no está permitido. Los alumnos necesitan utilizar su “voz de interiores” calmada y
hablarle solamente al alumno que esta sentado a su lado. El conductor del
bus se distrae cuando los alumnos hacen mucho ruido, y crea un ambiente
inseguro en el bus.
- Se espera que los alumnos se traten
mutuamente, a la niñera y al conductor con respeto. No están permitidos
los insultos, lenguaje grosero, o gestos inadecuados, empujones, pateadas,
y molestarse en el bus.
- Los alumnos no deben botar
basura, papeles, o cualquier otro objeto adentro o afuera del bus.
- No es permitido ir con comidas
o bebidas en el bus.
Consecuencias:
- Primera ofensa: Advertencia y recordatorio de las reglas
- Segunda ofensa: Reunión
con el Supervisor de Transporte, y notificación a los padres
- Tercera ofensa: Perdida de privilegios de bus por tres días; notificación
a los padres; nota en el expediente del alumno
- Cuarta Ofensa: Perdida de privilegios de bus por 10 días hasta
el final del año escolar; notificación a los padres; nota en el expediente
del alumno.
CAMPAÑA DE MATRICULA: La Campaña de Matricula del año pasado trajo 14 nuevos
alumnos a la escuela y ayudo con el conteo con un 13% de incremento en la
matricula que hemos experimentado este año. La Junta Directiva ha decidido
repetir la Campaña de Matricula para el año escolar 2013-2014.
- PERIODO DE LA CAMPAÑA DE MATRICULA: Esta oportunidad es desde
el 16 de abril hasta el 31 de agosto del 2013, y no es retroactivo.
- CONDICIONES:
A.
El padre de
Discovery debe presentar personalmente al nuevo alumno potencial y los
padres a Ms. Giles al comienzo de proceso de admisión (estos deben ser personas
que no han solicitado información de admisión)
B.
La escuela seguirá
el proceso de admisión acostumbrado para determinar si el alumno es
admitido
C.
El beneficio en efectivo aplicará solamente si el
nuevo alumno es realmente aceptado en el año escolar 2013-2014.
- EL BENEFICIO EN EFECTIVO PARA LOS PADRES Y MAESTROS DE DISCOVERY:
Durante
el periodo de matrícula, por cada nuevo alumno que una familia presente a Ms.
Giles y por consecuencia es admitido después de reunir todos los requisitos de admisión,
el padre o maestro que lo apadrino recibirá un bono en efectivo del 5%
de la colegiatura (no el fondo de inversión) que el nuevo alumno pague durante el año
escolar 2013-2014.
- REQUISITOS DE ADMISION: Se requiere de todos los nuevos alumnos
cumplir con los requisitos de admisión que ya están establecidos. Si un
alumno aplica y no es admitido, no se pagará el bono.
- ORGANIZACIONES: Esta oferta solo aplica a individuos que pagan su
propia colegiatura y no aplica a organizaciones.
- COMPLICACIONES IMPREVISTAS: La Junta se reserva el derecho a
descontinuar la Campaña de Matricula en cualquier momento si se presentan
complicaciones inesperadas para la escuela.
**NOTA: Si un grado se llena,
la Escuela Discovery se reserva el derecho de poner al nuevo aplicante en lista
de espera. En tal caso, el bono no será efectivo a menos que el alumno sea admitido
durante el año escolar 2013-2014.

ESTADO SIN
FINES DE LUCRO: Discovery es una escuela sin fines de lucro. El dinero que
nuestros padres pagan destina a la educación. No se utiliza para el
enriquecimiento personal de cualquier persona. Los padres a determinar todos
los presupuestos, salarios y políticas. Ellos son los que son dueños de la
escuela. Sus hijos se benefician de dicha inversión.
PROGRAMA
ACADÉMICO DE SECUNDARIA: El programa académico de nuestra Escuela Secundaria y
Bachillerato son rigurosos y preparan a nuestros estudiantes para la
universidad. Nuestra meta es preparar a los estudiantes para una variedad de
opciones cuando se gradúen. La colocación avanzada (AP) proporciona cursos que
se imparten a nivel universitario y en muchos casos conduce a un estudiante
obtener créditos universitarios mientras están en la escuela secundaria.
Nuestra Matemáticas, Lengua y Literatura, y los programas de Español en
Secundaria son superiores.
