NEW YEAR!
WELCOME BACK! We hope you
all had a fun and restful winter break, and your batteries are recharged for
the second semester. New and exciting things await all of us this year.
SACS
ACCREDITATION - We are beginning to form committees to collect data to support our
case for reaccreditation with the AdvancED/SACS Association. There will be opportunities to for parents to
participate in the activities of the committee.
Your participation is one of the key indicators of a healthy, highly
functional school. There are five standing
committees, with chairpersons as noted:
1. Purpose and Direction (Chair: Ms. Cristiana Banegas); 2. Governance and Leadership (Chair: Ms. Nora
Sierra); 3. Teaching and Assessing for Learning (Co-Chairs: Ms. Christina
Agurcia & Ms. Ashley Lardizábal);
4. Resources and Support Systems (Chair: Ms. Regina Ochoa); and 5. Using
Results for Continuous Improvement (Chair: Ms. Marilis Zambrana). There is a lot of information to generate,
and we ask your cooperation as we go through this 8 month process. More information will follow!
SCHOOL
IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS - We worked intensely over the
Christmas Break to bring a number of school improvement projects to conclusion,
and as we begin the 2015 spring semester, we can see that the end is nearly in
sight for the fulfillment of the vision the Board of Directors is strongly
committed to achieve.
THE
SOCCER FIELD AND PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUND. Both areas now have a network of French drainage tile and a minimum
of 15 cms. of compacted, fine gravel to absorb rainwater and ensure efficient
drainage. The Board of Directors chose
to insist on a “3rd generation” artificial turf of the type that
FIFA is now using that does not employ fine sand or crushed rubber fillers. This caused a bit of delay, because this
product is not readily available and had to be imported. Our current information is that the
installation of the new turf will begin on Friday after school and will be
mostly completed for the following Monday.
We will keep you informed of any new developments.
THE
INFIRMARY. The
Board approved the construction of a small, centrally located Nurse’s station
near the fountain between the elementary and pre-school areas. The construction phase has finished and the
crew will now be doing the inside finishing (floors, ceiling, windows/door,
& lighting). This should be finished
within 2 weeks, depending on the special order of window frames to match those
already existing in the school.
REMODELING
OF BATHROOMS. The school has hired a mason and a mason’s assistant (they built the
champa in the pre-school area) who work under the supervision and direction of
the school administration. They are
working at this moment on the bathrooms near the library. When this project is completed, they will
move on to the bathrooms in the elementary area and in the high school.
The Discovery School Board of Directors has undertaken a careful review of immediate and longer term
infrastructural needs, and I will be informing you of progress as we develop
priorities and specific plans.
Certainly, the information provided by parent surveys has guided this
process. Thank you to all members of the
parent community who respond promptly to our requests for feedback! Your voice is heard.
SECOND
QUARTER REPORT CARDS AND CONFERENCES – Next Friday,
January 16 has been set aside for the distribution of the report cards for the
second quarter. This day in an early dismissal day for students, and they will
be released at 11:45 a.m. We will follow the PM Schedule (which begins with period four). Conferences for this
day are on a need basis. Teachers will send notices for the conferences on
Monday, January 12. If you did not receive a notice, but would like to meet
with a teacher, please do not hesitate to contact the school to set an appointment
for the afternoon of that day.
EPSON
TRAINING –Epson is flying a specialized trainer
being in to Tegucigalpa next week. The administration team has has decided to
seize the opportunity being offered for the professional development of our
teachers in the area of technology. Therefore, next Wednesday, January 14
will be an early dismissal day for students, and we will follow the AM schedule (periods one through four).
The training will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the computer lab.
FROM THE CONSELOR’S OFFICE –
***We wish to congratulate Victoria
Glynn on her admission to Michigan
State University. Victoria has also been invited to join the Honors College
in MSU and be awarded some significant scholarships. Victoria has as well added to her admissions list, Boston College, Florida State University,
and Fordham University ( New York).
Way to go, Victoria!
*** Our congratulations also go to Katarina Fenn on her admission to Trevecca Nazarene University in Tennessee. Katarina has been
offered a significant scholarship. Kudos to you, Katarina!

BIENVENIDOS! Esperamos
que hayan disfrutado de unas vacaciones divertidas y relajantes, y que sus baterías
estén recargadas para el segundo semestre. Cosas nuevas y emocionantes nos
esperan este año.
ACREDITACION DE SACS - Estamos
formando comités para la recolección de información para respaldar nuestro caso
de re-acreditación con la Asociación de AdvancED/SACS. Habrá oportunidades que
los padres participen en las actividades del comité. Su participación es una de
las claves que indican una escuela saludable y de alta funcionalidad. Hay cinco
comités formados, con los siguientes presidentes: 1. Propósito y Dirección (precedido
por: Ms. Cristiana Banegas); 2. Gobernabilidad y Liderazgo (precedido por: Ms.
Nora Sierra); 3. Enseñanza y Medición de Aprendizaje (co-precedidos por: Ms. Christina
Agurcia y Ms. Ashley Lardizabal); 4.Recursos y Sistemas de Soporte (precedido
por: Ms. Regina Ochoa); y 5.Utilizando los Resultados para Mejoramiento Contínuo
(precedido por: Ms. Marilis Zambrana). Hay mucha información que generar, y pedimos
su colaboración durante este proceso de 9 meses. Se les proporcionará mas información!
PROYECTOS DE MEJORAS EN LA ESCUELA –
Hemos trabajado intensamente
durante las vacaciones de navidad para completar varios proyectos de mejoras, a
medida que empecemos el semestre de primavera del 2015, para poder ver que al
final se verá el cumplimiento de la visión de la Junta Directiva que está
fuertemente comprometida a hacerlo.
CAMPO DE FUTBOL Y AREA DE JUEGOS DE
PRE-ESCOLAR. Ambas áreas tienen
una red de drenaje francés y un mínimo de 15 cms. de grava finamente compactada
para absorber el agua de lluvia y asegurar un drenaje eficiente. La Junta
Directiva insistió en la grama artificial de “3era generación” que actualmente
usa la FIFA para que no sea necesario utilizar relleno de arena fina o caucho
granulado. Esto ha causado una pequeña demora, ya que este producto no
estaba disponible y tuvo que ser importado. Nuestra información actualmente es
que la instalación de la grama comenzará el día viernes después de clases y
estará casi completa el siguiente lunes. Les mantendremos informados de
cualquier cambio.
LA ENFERMERIA. La Junta aprobó
la construcción de una pequeña enfermería localizada de manera céntrica cerca
de la fuente, en medio de las áreas de primaria y pre-escolar. La fase de construcción
ha finalizado, y el personal estarán realizando los trabajos de acabados
internos (pisos, cielo falso, ventanas/puertas, e iluminación). Esto deberá
estar finalizado dentro de las próximas 2 semanas, dependiendo de la llegada de
la orden especial de marcos de ventanas que se hizo para que sean iguales a los
marcos existentes.
REMODELACION DE BAÑOS. La escuela ha contratado a un albañil y asistente
de albañil (quienes construyeron la champa en el área de pre-escolar) y que
trabajan bajo la supervisión de la administración de la escuela. En este
momento están trabajando en los baños cerca de la biblioteca. Cuando este
proyecto esté completo, se moverán a los baños del área de primaria y a los de
secundaria.
La Junta Directiva de la Escuela
Discovery ha tomado en consideración
la revisión cuidadosa de las necesidades infraestructurales inmediatas y a
largo plazo, y les estaré informando el progreso de manera que desarrollamos
prioridades y planes específicos. Ciertamente, la información recibida en las
encuestas a padres ha guiado este proceso. Agradecemos a todos los miembros de
la comunidad de padres que responden a tiempo a nuestras solicitudes de retroalimentación!

CALIFICACIONES Y CONFERENCIAS DEL
SEGUNDO TRIMESTRE - El próximo viernes 16 de enero se ha
establecido para la entrega de calificaciones del segundo trimestre. Este día los
alumnos saldrán temprano, a las 11:45 a.m. Llevaremos a cabo el horario
PM (el cual comienza con el cuarto período). Este día se realizaran
conferencias según sea necesario. Los maestros enviarán notificaciones para las
conferencias el lunes 12 de enero. Si usted no recibe notificación, pero desea
reunirse con un maestro, no dude en comunicarse con la escuela para concertar
una cita durante la tarde de ese día.
CAPACITACION DE EPSON - Epson
traerá un instructor especializado la próxima semana. El equipo administrativo
ha decido aprovechar la oportunidad ofrecida para el desarrollo profesional de
nuestros maestros en el área de la tecnología. Por lo tanto, el próximo miércoles
14 de enero tendremos un día de salida temprana para los alumnos, y
seguiremos el horario AM (períodos
del primero al cuarto). La capacitación comenzará a la 1:00 p.m. en el
laboratorio de computación.

***Deseamos felicitar a Victoria Glynn por su admisión a la Universidad del Estado de Michigan. Victoria también ha sido
