We hope you all had a great holiday! Please read this (and all weekly memos) carefully. Important information is distributed in them.

LANDSCAPING (Pre-School Area)—We have be working very hard to beautify areas of the school, and pre-school parents will notice that we have added nutrients to the soil in the preschool area and decorated with a wood product (non-toxic!) to improve the previously uncovered areas.  Parents may expect this project to be extended in the coming months.  Please remind your children to pick up water bottles and trash and help with the beautification of the school.  Thanks!

SUNSHINE SCHOOL FRIENDLY SPORTS ACTIVITIES – Next Wednesday, January 28 our students will receive the visit of Sunshine School. Our Grades K-2 will be participating in games and races, and grades 3-8 will be playing friendly soccer matches. This day is an early dismissal day (PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS) and students will be released at 11:45 a.m. Our teachers will be working on special committees this afternoon for our AdvancedEd certification.

KARATE EXHIBITION – There will be a Karate demonstration for all our student body, coordinated by Ms. Yery Villeda with the Federación Nacional  Kenpo Karate Honduras. This will take place on Friday, January 23 at 2:10 p.m. in the library.

BRICKS4KIDS – As an after school activity for our younger students, the school has been in contact with Bricks4 kidz to offer six one-hour, Friday- afternoon sessions beginning on Friday, January 30 from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.. Following the We learn-We build-We play approach, Bricks 4 Kidz after-school classes build on the universal popularity of LEGO® bricks to deliver a high quality of educational play.  For more information on its educational value, visit http://www.bricks4kidz.com/  Bricks4kidz will be here on Friday, January 23 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. if you want to register your child(ren).

FIELDTRIP TO THE MIN – Grades 3-5 will be visiting the Museo de Identidad Nacional on Friday, January 23. Permission slips will be distributed and need to be sent home today, and must be signed and returned with the established fee no later than Wednesday. For this fieldtrip, our students need to wear a Discovery School Polo (or t-shirt).

AASCA MUSIC DIRECTOR – Because of her outstanding trajectory both with the Discovery School Choir and in her personal / professional career, our very own Ms. Pamela Cruz has been invited by the Association of American Schools of Central American to direct the Honors Choir at the 2014-2015 AASCA Music Festival to be held in Copan this week. Congratulations Ms. Pamela for this tremendous honor!

STUCO MEETING: Dr. Ketterer will be meeting with all STUCO (Student Council) representatives on Tuesday, January 20 at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will take place in the Library.

DPTO FUN RUN – The DPTO has been working hard to organize the annual Fun Run, which will be held this year on Saturday, January 31. The activity will begin with registration of our runners at 8:30 a.m., followed by the run at 9:00 a.m and the traditional pancake breakfast at around 9:45 a,m. Pledge forms were distributed with the report cards last Friday. The DPTO would appreciate teachers (besides the P.E. teachers) who are interested in helping to contact Ms. Karla Soto (dsmarketing@discoveryschool.edu.hn) or Ms. Cristiana to see what they can help with.

FROM THE CONSELOR’S OFFICE:

*** Our senior, Victoria Glynn, has been admitted to Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. In addition, she was selected as a University Scholarship recipient. The admission is accompanied by a significant cash award covering 4 years of study. We are proud to see that Vicky is being recognized as the type of student who will excel in Case Western Reserve University which is recognized nationwide for its rigorous academic programs. Way to go Vicky!

*** Katarina Fenn got recently admitted to Redeemer University (Canada) with eligibility to a scholarship. She also got admitted to Hope College in Michigan and her academic records qualify her for a merit scholarship. Nyack College (New York) also accepted her. Congratulations, Katarina!

***Scholastic - Scholastic Book Club leaflets are out. This is an optional activity offered by the school, because we know you want to motivate your child to read at home.  With your purchase, our library will accumulate points to redeem more books for the benefit of your children in our school.  The due date to purchase the books online is Jan.30. The books will arrive to the school in one single delivery, and we will distribute them to the students according to their orders, approximately three weeks after the purchase due date.

***Hygiene Talk - A talk on good hygiene habits will be given by Mrs. Marilís Zambrana (School Counselor) to the 6th graders on the following days and times:

·         6B- Wednesday, January 21 at 1:20 p.m. in the Library

CAYOS COCHINOS - As part of TES, Trabajo Educativo Social, the 12th graders will be going to Cayos Cochinos  on March 2 to 7  to assist the community of Cayo Mayor. The Alfonso Lacayo Public School is in need of school materials, so the Senior class has decided to conduct a school supply drive. They would appreciate any and all donations but wish to ask the following classes that each student contributes the following:

Nursery and Kinder – I pack of 12 colored markers

1st and 2nd – 2 pencil sharpeners

3rd and 4th – 1 pack of 12 colored pencils

5th – 2 scissors

6th to 8th – 2 normal sized composition notebooks

9th – 1 blue, black and red pen

10th – 1 pack of 12 pencils and two erasers

11th – 4 UHU glue sticks

WE WOULD ALSO GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY SPANISH BOOK DONATIONS. Please help not only the Senior class, but also the inhabitants of Cayo Mayor.

PAISAJE (Área de pre-escolar) – Hemos estado trabajando arduamente para embellecer las áreas de la escuela, los padres de alumnos en pre-escolar notarán que hemos agregado nutrientes a la tierra en el área de pre-escolar y lo hemos decorado con producto de madera (no tóxico!) para mejorar las anteriormente mencionadas áreas no cubiertas. Favor recuerde a sus hijos que recojan las botellas de agua y la basura y nos ayuden con el embellecimiento de la escuela. Gracias!

ACTIVIDAD DEPORTIVA AMISTOSA CON LA ESCUELA SUNSHINE – el próximo miércoles 28 de enero, nuestros alumnos recibirán la visita de la Escuela Sunshine. Los grados de K-2 estarán participando en juegos y carreras, y los grados de 3-8 jugarán partidos amistosos de futbol. Este día es de salida temprana (DESARROLLO PROFESIONAL) y los alumnos saldrán a las 11:45 a.m. Nuestros maestros estarán trabajando en los comités especiales esa tarde para nuestra certificación con AdvancED.

EXHIBICION DE KARATE – Tendremos una demostración de Karate para todo el alumnado, coordinado por Ms. Yery Villeda junto a la Federación Nacional Kenpo Honduras. Esto se llevará a cabo el día viernes 23 de enero a las 2:10 p.m. en la biblioteca.

BRICKS4KIDS – Como una actividad extracurricular para nuestros alumnos más pequeños, la escuela ha estado en comunicación con Bricks4 kidz para ofrecer seis sesiones de una hora, los viernes por la tarde comenzando desde el viernes 30 de enero de 3:15 p.m. a 4:15 p.m. Siguiendo el acercamiento We learn-We build-We play, las clases de Bricks 4 Kidz  se basan en la popularidad universal de bloques LEGO® para proporcionar juegos educativos de alta calidad. Para mayor información del valor educativo viste http://www.bricks4kidz.com/  Bricks4kidz estarán con nosotros el día viernes 23 de enero de 2:00 a 3:30 p.m. si desea registrar a su(s) hijo(s).

PASEO AL MIN – Los alumnos de los grados de 3 – 5 estarán visitando el Museo de la Identidad Nacional el viernes 23 de enero. Las hojas de permiso se distribuirán y enviarán a casa hoy, deben ser firmadas y enviadas de regreso con la tarifa establecida a más tardar el miércoles. Para este paseo, nuestros alumnos necesitan usar la camisa Polo de Discovery School (o camiseta).

DIRECTOR DE MUSICA DE AASCA – Por su destacada trayectoria con ambos el Coro de la Escuela Discovery y en su carrera personal/profesional, nuestra maestra Ms. Pamela Cruz ha sido invitada por la Asociación de Escuelas Americanas de Centro América para dirigir el Coro Honorario en el Festival de Música 2014-2015 AASCA que se realizará en Copan esta semana. Felicitaciones Ms. Pamela por esta gran honor!

REUNION STUCO – Dr. Ketterer se estará reuniendo con todo los representantes del STUCO (Consejo Estudiantil) el martes 20 de enero a las 10:00 a.m. La reunión se realizará en la biblioteca.

CAMINATA POR LA DIVERSION DEL DPTO – El DPTO ha estado trabajando arduamente para organizar nuestra anual Caminata por la Diversión, que se llevará a cabo este año el día sábado 31 de enero. La actividad comenzará las inscripciones de nuestros corredores a las 8:30 a.m., seguido de la carrera a las 9:00 a.m. y el tradicional desayuno de panqueques alrededor de las 9:45 a.m. Los formularios de promesa se entregaron con las calificaciones el viernes pasado. El DPTO apreciará que los maestros (además de los de P.E.) que estén interesados en colaborar se comuniquen con Ms. Karla Soto (dsmarketing@discoveryschool.edu.hn ) o Ms. Cristiana para ver en que pueden ayudar.

DESDE LA OFICINA DE LA CONSEJERIA:

***Nuestra senior Victoria Glynn, fue admitida en la Universidad Case Western Reserve en Ohio. Adicionalmente fue elegida como beneficiaria de una beca. La admisión va acompañada con un premio en efectivo muy significativo que cubre 4 años de estudios. Estamos muy orgullosos de ver que Vicky está siendo reconocida como el tipo de alumno que sobresaldrá en la Universidad Case Western que es reconocida a nivel nacional por sus programas académicos muy rígidos. Bien hecho Vicky!

*** Katarinna Fenn fue recientemente admitida a la Universidad Redeemer (Canadá) con elegibilidad a beca. También fue admitida en Hope College en Michigan y sus registros académicos la hacen calificar para una beca meritoria. Igualmente la aceptó Nyack College (Nueva York). Felicidades Katarina!

*** Scholastic – Las órdenes del Club del Libro de Scholastic ya se enviaron. Esta es una actividad opcional ofrecida por la escuela, ya que queremos motivar a su(s) hijo(s) a leer en casa. Con su compra, nuestra biblioteca acumulará puntos para redimir por más libros para el beneficio de sus hijos en la escuela. La fecha límite para comprar los libros en línea es el 30 de enero. Los libros llegarán a la escuela en un solo envío, y nosotros los distribuiremos a los alumnos de acuerdo con las órdenes, aproximadamente 3 semanas después de la compra.

***Charla de Higiene – Una charla sobre buenos hábitos de higiene será impartida por Ms. Marilis Zambrana (consejera estudiantil) para los alumnos de 6to grado, según el siguiente horario:

·         6B – miércoles 21 de enero a la 1:20 p.m. en la biblioteca.

CAYOS COCHINOS – Como parte del TES, Trabajo Educativo Social, los alumnos de 12vo grado estarán viajando a Cayos Cochinos del 2 al 7 de marzo para ayudar a la comunidad de Cayo Mayor. La Escuela Pública Alfonso tiene necesidad de materiales escolares, asi que la clase de los seniors ha decidió conducir una recolección de materiales escolares. Ellos apreciarán cualquier donación pero desean solicitarles los siguientes materiales por alumno en cada grado:

                                   1er y 2do – 2 sacapuntas
