MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD –
Please remember that there will be a General Assembly on Saturday, May 14, at
9:00 a.m. Among the issues to be addressed are 1) the school calendar, 2)
the budget for the coming year, and 3) the election of four (4) board
members. Please mark this on your calendars. We sent out the
formal call to assembly on April 29, as directed by the statutes of the
Association.
Why get involved in Discovery School?
Parents sometimes ask why they should get
involved with school activities. There has been research on the benefits
and can be summarized as:
1.Higher grades. Kids whose parents are
involved in their education generally get better grades and have higher
test scores.
2. Better
behavior. Kids develop better social skills and show improved behavior when
their parents are involved at school.
3. Improved
education. Parent involvement can help improve the quality of schools,
raise teacher morale, and improve a school’s reputation in the community.
4. Increased
confidence. When students feel supported at home and school, they develop
more positive attitudes about school, have more self-confidence, and place a
higher priority on academic achievement.
There are
many ways to get involved, and I hope you do so. Opportunities
include the Board of Directors (elections this weekend at the General
Assembly), joining the DPTO, being a classroom parent representative, and
joining Board committees.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON
MAY 14 - The
Discovery School’s third General Assembly meeting is scheduled for Saturday,
May 14, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. at the school's cafeteria. There will be 4 vacancies on the Board of
Directors. Nominations will still be accepted the day of the General Assembly,
as specified in our by-laws.
The reward of an “ice cream day” will be offered to the
elementary and secondary group with best attendance resulting in a quorum.
**ART EXHIBIT – we will be having our annual Art Exhibit on
Saturday.
**CHILD SUPERVISED ACTIVITIES FOR THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY – In
order to help our parents attend the General Assembly, the school is providing
supervised activities in the Early Childhood area for those parents who would
like to bring their children to school. There will be movies, arts &
crafts, board games and word games available for those who find child care on
Saturday a difficulty!
Please note that, other than
an art exposition, we will be focused on the decision-making agenda of the
day. There will not be any performances
and every attempt will be made to reduce your time commitment to this very
important annual assembly.
MAP TESTING FOR SPRING – We
began the MAP testing session for Spring 2016 on Tuesday, May 3. Please see the schedule below.
OPEN HOUSE
– The school will have an Open House for new families on Friday, May 20, from
8:30 to 10:30 a.m. This is a day in which we have to shine! Please invite your
friends who have potential students for the school.

soccer tournament during lunch for third, fourth and fifth grade. Please take

ASSEMBLY – The assembly will take place on Friday, May 27 @ 1:30 pm.
BAKE SALE
– The Juniors will be having their last bake sale of the year on Friday, May 20. Goodies will be sold
during snack and lunch. All proceeds will go towards their upcoming community
service.

DAILY
ATTENDANCE – We would like to remind
parents that it is extremely important that your child arrives to school on
time EVERY DAY. By getting to school
on time, your child is able to organize his/her locker and backpack, turn in
all homework, and still have time to meet and greet his friends. When your
child is late to school, he come to class stressed out, interrupts the class,
and misses important information given by the teacher at the beginning of the
class. We strongly recommend your child arrives to school by 7:45 a.m. There is
a warning bell @ 7:55 and then classes begin promptly @ 8:00 a.m.

Congratulations to Nicolle Rojas on her two most recent university admissions, Kansas University and Seneca College in
Canada. Great job, Nicolle!
BRICKZ4KIDS – The
new module on Space Explorations begins on Monday, May 9. This module will last
4 weeks!
DISCOVERY IDOL – Start preparing your presentation for our annual talent show!
Auditions will take place during lunch recess in the music room on May 11 and
12.
SUMMER
CAMPS AT DISCOVERY SCHOOL -- Just like last year,
there will be two summer camps in the month of June. Discovery Zone 7 will be a
fun, artistic and entertaining camp for children 3 to 9 years old. There will
also be a reinforcement camp for reading, writing and French for students in
grades K-2. Both camps will run from June 13 to July 1, with the same schedule (8:00
a.m. to 12:00). Transportation is available at a small additional cost. If you
or a relative/friend is interested, more information can be given to you by Ms.
Carolina or at the accounting offices in school.

MENSAJE DE LA JUNTA DIRECTIVA – Favor recuerden
que tendremos una Asamblea General el día sábado 14 de mayo, a las 9:00 a.m.
Entre los temas a discutir están 1) el calendario escolar, 2) el presupuesto
para el próximo año, y 3) la elección de cuatro (4) miembros de la junta. Favor
marque la fecha en su calendario. Enviamos una convocatoria formal el 29 de
abril, según lo dictaminan los estatutos de la Asociación.
¿Por qué involucrarse en las actividades de la
Escuela Discovery?
Los padres algunas veces preguntan porque deben
involucrarse en las actividades de la escuela. Hay estudios acerca de los
beneficios que se pueden resumir de la siguiente manera:
1.Calificaciones mas altas. Los niños de
cuyos padres están involucrados en su educación generalmente obtienen mejores
calificaciones y tienen mayores notas en los exámenes.
2.Mejor comportamiento. Los niños desarrollan
mejores habilidades sociales y demuestran mejoramiento en su comportamiento
cuando sus padres están involucrados en la escuela.
3.Educacion de calidad. El involucramiento
de los padres puede ayudar a mejorar la calidad de las escuelas, levanta la
moral de los maestros, y mejoran la reputación de la escuela en la comunidad.
4.Aumento de la confianza. Cuando los
alumnos se sienten apoyados en casa y en la escuela, desarrollan mas actitudes
positivas acerca de su escuela, tienen más autoconfianza, y establecen una
mayor prioridad en los logros académicos.
Hay muchas maneras de involucrarse, y espero que
lo hagan. Las oportunidades incluyen la Junta Directiva (las elecciones son
este fin de semana en la Asamblea General), uniéndose al DPTO, siendo un padre representante
en el aula, y uniéndose a los comités de la junta.

ASAMBLEA
GENERAL EL 14 DE MAYO - La tercera Asamblea General de la Escuela
Discovery está programada para este sábado 14 de mayo de 2016, a las
9:00 a.m. en la cafetería de la escuela. Habrá cuatro vacantes en la
Junta Directiva. Las nominaciones serán aceptadas aún el día de la Asamblea
General según nuestros estatutos.
Se ofrecerá la recompensa de “un día de ice cream”
a los grupos de primaria y secundaria con la mejor asistencia que resulte en
quórum.
**EXHIBICION DE ARTE – Asimismo el
día sábado estaremos realizando nuestra Exhibición de Arte Anual.
**ACTIVIDADES SUPERVISADAS PARA
LOS NIÑOS EN LA ASAMBLEA GENERAL – Para ayudar a nuestros padres
asistir a la Asamblea General, la escuela proporcionará actividades
supervisadas en el área de pre-escolar para aquellos padres que deseen traer a
sus hijos a la escuela. Tendremos películas, manualidades, juegos de mesa y
juegos de palabras disponibles para aquellos que se les dificulta encontrar
quien cuide a los niños el sábado!
Favor tomen nota que además de la Exhibición de
Arte, nos enfocaremos en la toma de decisiones según la agenda del día. No
tendremos presentaciones y haremos lo posible para reducir el tiempo de
compromiso que deben prestarle a esta muy importante asamblea anual.

VENTA DE PASTELES – Los Juniors tendrán su ultima venta de pasteles
del año el viernes 20 de mayo. La
venta será durante el receso y el almuerzo. Todas las ganancias son para su próximo
año de servicio social.

ASISTENCIA DIARIA – Queremos recordarles a los padres que es
extremadamente importante que sus hijos lleguen a la escuela a tiempo TODOS LOS DÍAS. Al llegar a tiempo, le
da tiempo a su hijo(a) a organizar su casillero y mochila, entregar las tareas,
y todavía tener tiempo para saludar a sus amigos. Cuando su hijo(a) llega
tarde, llega a las clases estresado, interrumpe la clase, y se pierde de
información importante que los maestros dan al inicio de la clase. Firmemente
les recomendamos que sus hijos lleguen a la escuela antes de las 7:45 a.m.
Suena una campana de aviso a las 7:55 a.m. y las clases comienzan a las 8:00
a.m. en punto.

BRICKZ4KIDS - El nuevo modulo de Exploraciones
Espaciales comienza el lunes 9 de mayo. Este modulo durará 4 semanas!
DISCOVERY IDOL – Comienza a preparar tu presentación para nuestro
programa anual de talentos! Las audiciones se realizarán durante el recreo en
el aula de música el 11 y 12 de mayo.
CAMPAMENTOS DE VERANO EN LA ESCUELA DISCOVERY – Así como el año pasado, tendremos dos campamentos
en el mes de junio. El Discovery Fun 7 que será un campamento divertido,
artístico y mucho entretenimiento para los niños de 3 a 9 años. También
tendremos el campamento de refuerzo para lectura, escritura y francés para
alumnos de K – 4 grado. Ambos campamentos se realizarán del 13 de junio al 1 de
julio, al mismo horario (8:00 a.m. a 12:00). Tendremos transporte disponible
con un costo adicional. Si usted o un familiar/o amigo está interesado, Ms.
Carolina o en la oficina de contabilidad le proporcionarán mayor información.
