DISCOVERY SCHOOL MONDAY MEMO FOR PARENTS MAY 23, 2011

THE CHRONICLES OF DISCOVERY GALA WAS TRULY AN EVENING TO REMEMBER!! Last Friday, May 20, the High School parents and teachers came together at the Museo Del Hombre for a magnificent celebration of our students` literary and artistic talents. A very special recognition goes to Mr. Kjell Fenn for the superb work he does in the Language Arts department, and for putting together such a wonderful night, and to Ms. Elizabeth Campbell for the excellence in art that has been achieved by our students. We also thank the choir for their outstanding performance. Last, but certainly not least, we salute all the contestants for their hard work, and congratulate the winners of the evening:

MAP TESTING make-ups will be done today (Monday 23rd), These reports will be included in the report cards to be handed out on the last day of school.

CHOIR PRESENTATION – Our magnificent school choir has been invited to perform at the event “Los Niños Cantando por los Niños” sponsored by the World Food Programme on Wednesday, May 25, at 5:30 pm at the Manuel Bonilla theater. This is an initiative to help feed hungry children in the southern part of Honduras. Tickets are available for L.50 in the music room. Their performance will be aired on Thursday in channel 8 on local TV. We hope our community can assist on Wednesday--not only to support our choir, but such a worthy cause as well.

RAINY DAY PROCEDURES – Our teachers have been instructed to refrain from dismissing our students at 3:00 pm if it is raining heavily. The buses will wait, and we know our parents will understand that we are ensuring the safety of our students. We appreciate your patience. If it rains during recess time, and if there is thunder and lightning, the teachers will send the students back their classrooms.  

DISCOVERY IDOL – Our annual Talent Show is scheduled for June 7. Auditions are being held during recess and lunch. Please motivate your students into participating in this fun event.

DISCOVERY ZONE SUMMER CAMP – Our Summer camp is quickly filling up!!! It begins on June 13th. Please help promote our Summer Camp with your friends and relatives. This is a great tool to market the school.

ART EXHIBIT CONTINUES AT U.S. EMBASSY – We are continuing to showcase our students’ artistic talent by exhibiting a representative sample of student work at the U.S. Embassy until May 26. Thanks to Ms. Campbell, Mr. Vincent, Ms. Fink, Ms. Paola and all of those who have helped in selecting and arranging the display, and to the U.S. Embassy for allowing us to display our students’ artwork.

FENCING MATERIAL – Now that our security fence is completed, we will dispose of the wire and concrete panels that made up our original fence, as well as the original concertina wire that was at the top of the fence and some rebar and other materials. If you are interested in purchasing that fencing, please see Paola for further information on submitting a bid. Bids must be submitted in writing to Paola by Friday, May 27, and all materials purchased should be removed by Friday, June 17.

SALE OF COUCHES IN LIBRARY – As we make plans to improve the Elementary Library, we will sell the two couches that are currently located in the library (one is in secondary and one is in elementary). If you are interested in purchasing either or both of these couches, bids must be submitted in writing to Paola by Friday, May 27, and the couches must be removed by Friday, June 3.

SALE OF OTHER ITEMS – As we clean out the bodega on the lower field, we have identified several items that we will dispose of—damaged chairs and table tops, chalk and white boards, warped doors. If you are interested in any of these items, please talk to Paola. She will arrange a schedule when she can take interested persons to the bodega to see what is available.

RESERVE YOUR CHILD’S SPACE NOW FOR 2011-2012

From now through Tuesday, May 31, we will process information for enrollment and/or readmission to Discovery School.

In order to reserve space in a class for 2011-2012 school year:

1.              Because we have updated our forms, every parent must complete new registration forms and turn them in to Carolina, Receptionist, before May 31. (The forms are with Carolina)

2.              If you are responsible for paying some or all of your child’s fees and/or tuition, you must sign a Payment Contract in the Finance Office before May 31. (The forms are with Ms. Reina)

This information is for a one-year period and must be renewed each year.

For those of you who are leaving us, please remember that the office needs at least 2 weeks advance notice in order to have leaving documents ready in a timely manner. Therefore, to receive leaving documents this year, the request must submitted in writing to Carolina by Wednesday, May 25.

ENROLLMENT DRIVE - Please keep in mind that our Enrollment Drive is in effect from now until August 15. If you personally introduce a prospective parent to Ms. Giles, and if the new student is admitted following the admission procedures, you can receive a bonus of 3% of whatever tuition (not capital fees) that student pays for the 2011-2012 school year. Please see Ms. Giles if you have any questions or need further clarification. This is a great opportunity to promote Discovery School and receive a financial benefit at the same time!

MASS FOR GRADUATES – Marielos Bendeck, one of our Senior class Moms, has arranged a Mass for graduates on Thursday, May 26, for the Grade 6 and 12 students at La Guadalupe Church, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Students, teachers, parents and friends are welcome to attend.

LA GALA DE LAS CRONICAS DE DISCOVERY FUE REALMENTE UN EVENTO MEMORABLE!! El pasado viernes, 20 de mayo los padres la escuela secundaria y maestros se reunieron en el Museo del Hombre para una extraordinaria fiesta de "talentos literarios y artísticos” de nuestros estudiantes. Un reconocimiento muy especial a Mr. Kjell Fenn por el excelente trabajo que hace en el departamento de Lengua y Literatura, y por organizar una noche tan maravillosa, y a Ms. Elizabeth Campbell por la excelencia en arte que ha logrado para nuestros alumnos. También damos las gracias al coro por su destacada actuación. Por último, pero ciertamente no menos importante, saludamos a todos los concursantes por su arduo trabajo, y felicitamos a los ganadores de la noche:

EXÁMENES MAP de reposición se llevarán a cabo hoy (lunes 23). Estos reportes se incluirán en las calificaciones que se entregarán el último día de clases.

PRESENTACIÓN DEL CORO - Nuestro magnífico coro de la escuela ha sido invitado a actuar en el evento "Los Niños Cantando Por los Niños", patrocinado por el Programa Mundial de Alimentos el miércoles, 25 de mayo a las 5:30 pm en el teatro Manuel Bonilla. Esta es una iniciativa para ayudar a alimentar a niños hambrientos en el sur de Honduras. Los boletos están disponibles por L.50 en el salón de música. Su actuación será transmitida en diferido el jueves en el canal 8 por televisión local. Esperamos que nuestra comunidad pueda asistir el miércoles - no sólo para apoyar a nuestro coro, sino una causa tan digna también.

PROCEDIMIENTO DE DÍAS LLUVIOSOS - Nuestros maestros han recibido instrucciones para que se abstengan de despedir a nuestros alumnos a las 3:00 pm si está lloviendo mucho. Los autobuses esperaran, y sabemos que nuestros padres comprenderán que estamos garantizando la seguridad de nuestros alumnos. Gracias por su paciencia. Si llueve durante la hora del recreo, y si hay truenos y relámpagos, los maestros van a enviar a los alumnos de nuevo sus aulas.

IDOLO DISCOVERY – Nuestro show anual de Talentos esta programado para el 7 de junio. Las audiciones se llevaran a cabo durante receso y hora de almuerzo. Favor anime a sus alumnos a participar en este divertido evento.

CAMPAMENTO DE VERANO ZONA DE DISCOVERY – Nuestro campamento de verano se esta llenando!!! Comienza el 13 de junio. Favor ayúdenos a promover el Campamento de Verano con sus amigos y familiares. Es una buena herramienta para promover la escuela.

LA EXHIBICION DE ARTE CONTINUA EN LA EMBAJADA AMERICANA – Continuamos presentando el talento artístico de nuestros alumnos por medio de la exhibición con una muestra representativa de sus trabajos en la Embajada Americana hasta el 26 de mayo. Gracias a Ms. Campbell, Mr. Vincent, Ms. Fink, Ms. Paola y a todos aquellos que ayudaron a seleccionar y arreglar la exhibición, y a la Embajada Americana por permitirnos presentar el trabajo artístico de nuestros alumnos.

MATERIAL DEL MURO ANTERIOR - Ahora que nuestra muro perimetral está terminado, vamos a eliminar las mallas y paneles de concreto que conformaban nuestro muro original, así como el alambre de púas original que se encontraba en la parte superior de la cerca y algunas barras de refuerzo y otros materiales. Si usted está interesado en la compra de algún artículo, por favor, consulte a Paola para obtener más información sobre la presentación de una oferta. Las ofertas deberán presentarse antes del viernes, 27 de mayo y todos los materiales adquiridos deben ser retirados antes del viernes, 17 de junio.

VENTA DE SOFAS DE LA BIBLIOTECA - Al hacer planes para mejorar la Biblioteca de Primaria, venderemos los dos sofás que se encuentran actualmente en la biblioteca (uno esta en el área de secundaria y uno está en primaria). Si usted está interesado en la compra de uno o ambos de estos sillones, las ofertas deberán presentarse por escrito a Paola el viernes 27 de mayo y los sofás deben ser removidos antes del viernes 3 de junio.

VENTA DE OTROS ARTÍCULOS - A medida que se limpia la bodega en el campo inferior, hemos identificado varios elementos que vamos a desechar como sillas dañadas y tableros, pizarras de tiza y pizarras de formica, puertas deformadas. Si usted está interesado en alguno de estos artículos, por favor hable con Paola. Ella se encargará de hacer programa para que las personas interesadas puedan ir a la bodega a ver lo que está disponible.

RESERVE EL CUPO DE SU HIJO AHORA PARA EL 2011-2012

Desde hoy, hasta el martes 31 de mayo, procesaremos las solicitudes de matricula y/o readmisión a Discovery School.

 Para que reserve espacio en un grado para el año escolar 2011-2012:

1. Debido a que hemos actualizado nuestros formularios, cada padre debe llenar una nueva forma de admisión y entregarla a Carolina, Recepcionista antes del 31 de mayo. (Los formularios los tiene Carolina)

2. Si usted es el encargado de pagar parte o toda la colegiatura de su(s) hijo(s), debe firmar un Contrato de Pagos en la oficina de finanzas antes del 31 de mayo. (Los formularios los tiene Ms. Reina)

Esta información es por un período de un año y será renovada cada año.

 Para aquellos que nos dejan, favor recordar que la oficina necesita al menos 2 semanas de preaviso para preparar los documentos necesarios en su tiempo debido. Por lo tanto, recibir los documentos de traslado de este año, la solicitud debe presentarse por escrito a Carolina el miércoles, 25 de mayo.

CAMPAÑA DE MATRICULA - Por favor, tenga en cuenta que nuestra campaña de  está en efecto desde ahora hasta el 15 de agosto. Si usted personalmente presenta un futuro padre a Ms. Giles, y si el nuevo estudiante es admitido según los procedimientos de admisión, puede recibir un bono de 3% de la colegiatura (no del fondo de inversión) que el alumno paga por el año escolar 2011-2012. Por favor, consulte a Ms. Giles si usted tiene cualquier pregunta o duda. Esta es una gran oportunidad para promover la escuela Discovery y recibir un beneficio económico, al mismo tiempo!

MISA PARA LOS GRADUANDOS – Marielos Bendeck, una de las mamas de la clase de los Seniors ha preparado una misa para los graduandos el jueves 26 de mayo, para los alumnos de 6to y 12vo en la Iglesia La Guadalupe que dará inicio a las 7:00 p.m. Alumnos, maestros y amigos serán bienvenidos a asistir.
