GENERAL ASSEMBLY - The General Assembly last Thursday was a success! Over 70 people were present, and we thank the parents who took time out of their very busy schedules to come and support the school. We want to thank Dr. Eduardo Retes for presenting the school nurse and the medical team from OMS, and Mr. Daniel Lopes, UN Security Advisor, who talked about security in Honduras, and especially on the school campus. Mr. Lopes reminded and encouraged parents of the importance of complying with the security procedures and guidelines that the school has set in place to ensure the safety of our students, including rolling windows down upon entry and exit and allowing guards to look inside the vehicle. Parents were encouraged to speak with their drivers and bodyguards about these procedures, as they are in the best interest of all of our students and staff. We will continue to enforce these regulations, especially during drop off and pick up times. We thank you for helping our guards and teachers follow the guidelines that have been given to them for these purposes.
TWITTER ACCOUNT—with the guidance of Warren Ochoa, Computer Instructor, we now have a Twitter account that will provide some visibility for the school in terms of people who may be relocating to Honduras and looking for information about schools. This is one of the ways we are going to use technology to market Discovery School. If you want to follow our account, go to twitter.com and become a follower of Debra Giles. This is a work in progress, so please make any recommendations that you think will help with our marketing, especially through electronic means.
SCHOOL MASCOT - The voting for the image of our new school mascot THE WOLF will take place today in the school cafeteria area.
OFFICE OF OVERSEAS SCHOOLS VISIT TO DISCOVERY SCHOOL – Thanks, once again to Dr. Bill Scotti from the Office of Overseas School (Department of State), who is an avid supporter of Discovery School
All parents are also invited to attend an evening session with Mr. Whitney at the American School
REPORT CARDS, NARRATIVES, MAP REPORTS AND SCHEDULING CONFERENCES – Student Led Conferences will be held on Friday, October 21. Elementary Teachers will be sending out the notices to all parents to set up conference times. Middle and High School Conferences will be on a fist come-first serve basis. Report Cards and MAP reports should be handed out on this day. If you cannot make it that day, please call the office to schedule an appointment on another day.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEDNESDAYS – Following SACS recommendations, we will devote the last Wednesday of each month to professional development of our teachers. Students will be dismissed at 11:45 am on the last Wednesday of each month, starting on Wednesday, October 26. Students will be dismissed at 11:40 a.m. We will follow AM schedule on this day.
UN DAY CELEBRATION – The DPTO has been meeting regularly to plan upcoming events, especially the UN Day taking place on Friday, October 28. This is an event that celebrates the true international flavor of our school community.
HAVE LUNCH WITH YOUR ELEMENTARY STUDENT – The School Cafeteria wants to invite all the Elementary Parents to come and have lunch with their child(ren) on Friday, November 4. On this day, the Adult size meal will be offered for the children size price! A notice for pre-ordering will be sent home next week, but you might want to mark you calendars for that day!

ASAMBLEA GENERAL – La Asamblea General del jueves pasado fue todo un éxito! Más de 70 personas estaban presentes, y agradecemos a los padres que tomaron el tiempo de su muy agitada agenda para poder venir y dar su apoyo a la escuela. Queremos agradecer al Dr. Eduardo Retes por hacer la presentación de la enfermera escolar y el equipo médico de OMS, y Daniel López, Consejero de Seguridad de NU, quien nos hablo de la seguridad en Honduras, y especialmente en la escuela. El Sr. López recordó y exhorto a los padres a cumplir con las medidas y lineamientos de seguridad que la escuela ha establecido para asegurar la seguridad de nuestros alumnos, incluyendo el hecho de bajar las ventanas en la entrada y la salida para permitir a los guardias ver adentro del vehículo. Se le recomienda a los padres a hablar con sus choferes y guardaespaldas acerca de estos procedimientos, ya que son para el mejor cuidado de todos nuestros alumnos y personal. Continuaremos reforzando estas regulaciones, especialmente durante las horas de la entrada y la salida. Les agradecemos por la ayuda proporcionada a nuestros guardias y maestros en seguir las indicaciones que fueron establecidas para este propósito.
CUENTA EN TWITTER – Con la ayuda de Mr. Warren, Instructor de Computación, ahora contamos con una cuenta en Twitter la cual proveerá alguna visibilidad para personas que son asignadas a trabajar en Honduras y buscan información de escuelas. VISITA A DISCOVERY SCHOOL DE LA OFICINA DE ESCUELAS EN EL EXTRANJERO - Gracias, una vez más al Dr. Bill Scotti de la Oficina de la Escuela del Exterior (Departamento de Estado), que es un ferviente partidario de la Escuela Discovery, recibiremos al Sr. Whitney Jarid de Cal Tech el jueves 20 de octubre. Él se reunirá con los alumnos de 9no y 10mo a las 1:15 pm, y con los alumnos de 11vo y 12vo a las 2:10 pm Todos los padres están invitados a venir también, y habrá tiempo a las 3:00 para preguntas individuales. Él informara a nuestra comunidad escolar sobre la creación de carteras de admisión para la universidad.

BOLETAS DE CALIFICACIONES, NARRATIVAS, REPORTES DE MAP Y PROGRAMACIÓN DE CONFERENCIAS – Las conferencias dirigidas por los alumnos se llevarán a cabo el viernes 21 de octubre. Los maestros de primaria enviarán las notificaciones a todos los padres informando las horas de sus conferencias. Las conferencias de secundaria serán atendidas por orden de llegada. Las boletas de calificaciones y los informes de MAP serán entregados ese día. Si usted no puede asistir ese día, por favor llame a la oficina para programar una cita en otro día.
MIÉRCOLES DE DESARROLLO PROFESIONAL - Siguiendo las recomendaciones de SACS, dedicaremos el último miércoles de cada mes para el desarrollo profesional de nuestros maestros. Los alumnos saldrán a las 11:45 horas el último miércoles de cada mes, comenzando el miércoles 26 de octubre. Los alumnos saldrán a las 11:40 am. Vamos a seguir horario AM en este día.
CELEBRACIÓN DEL DÍA DE NACIONES UNIDAS - El DPTO se ha estado reuniendo periódicamente para planificar los próximos eventos, en especial el Día de las Naciones Unidas que tendrá lugar el viernes 28 de octubre. Este es un evento que celebra el verdadero sabor internacional de nuestra comunidad escolar.
ALMUERCE CON SU ALUMNO DE PRIMARIA - La cafetería de la escuela quiere invitar a todos los padres de familia de primaria a venir a almorzar con su hijo (a) el viernes 4 de noviembre. En este día, el plato de comida para adultos se ofrecerá por el precio del tamaño de los niños! Un aviso para pre-pedido será enviado a casa la próxima semana, pero es posible que usted desee marcar el calendario para ese día!
