WORKSHOP: IT’S HERE! The pre-conference for the workshop will be held on Thursday, November 17 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. (attendance mandatory). The workshop hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 18 and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, November 19. There is no school on Friday, November 18.
ELEMENTARY STUDENT COUNCIL ASSEMBLY – There will be an Elementary Student Council Assembly for the different teams to present their plan of action if elected on Thursday, November 17 from 8:20 to 8:50 a.m. Student Council elections will be held on Wednesday, November 23.
MID-TERM REPORTS – It is hard to believe that the midterm for the second quarter is this Thursday, November 17. Midterm reports will be sent home the following Wednesday, November 23. Please make sure you go over these reports carefully. The report cards that will be issued at the end of the second quarter will not include narratives, thus it makes it important to address any concerns teachers and parents have in a timely manner. Our teachers are always ready and willing to meet with any parent to discuss the performance of their students. Please contact the school if a conference is not requested and you feel one is needed.
U.S. AMBASSADOR AND HEALTH UNIT VISIT – On Tuesday, November 15, at 10:00 a.m., the new U.S. Ambassador, Lisa Kubiske, and the new Nurse Practitioner at the US Embassy, Holly Paul, will visit Discovery School. This is their first chance to have the Discovery experience, and we know they will enjoy seeing what our teachers and students are doing in (and out of) the classroom.
VISIT TO ALISON BIXBY STONE SCHOOL IN ZAMORANO – On Thursday, November 17, Debbie, Nina Glynn (Board President) and Ivonne (Counselor) will visit Alison Bixby Stone School to facilitate a school-to-school relationship with them.
ABSH SPANISH CONTEST – The Spanish Department, Area Administrators, and all of our teachers are busy preparing to pilot a new program that was proposed by Discovery School. In February, in conjunction with the ABSH Spelling Bee, we will host the new ABSH Spanish Competition. This will require the work and cooperation of the school community, and we know that it will be an exciting opportunity to present another excellent event at Discovery.
TELEPHONE INTERRUPTIONS TO CLASS – During the Secondary Area Meeting, teachers discussed the numerous telephone interruptions that occur during classtime. We are looking into that in an effort of eliminating or minimizing those interruptions. Therefore, please note the following:
If a student forgets something at home, s/he can check with the office between classes to see if it has been delivered for them. We will not make calls into the classroom to inform students that something has been delivered. Students need to be reminded to plan ahead and bring their materials with them.
MIMIOS AND PROJECTORS -- The school has ordered two additional projectors and two additional Mimio interactive systems for the classrooms. Those will arrive soon and will be available to all teachers who want to use them on a sign-up basis. This will enable us to have three interactive white boards, and there are plans to continue adding more to facilitate teaching and learning.
AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES – Providing an After-School Activity program is a requirement from our SACS accreditation. However, we need to inject new life into our program and create more interest among the students.
Therefore, Ivonne (Counselor) is going to assume responsibility for overseeing and revamping the activities, working with Victor and Carol, for the second semester. She will lead the process of identifying those activities that we value as a school, that we want to do for the whole semester or the whole year, and that we want to do with excellence. She has already begun interviewing students to determine what they would like to see us offer.

ADVANC-ED LATIN AMERICAN CONFERENCE – Debbie will be gone from November 19 through December 3 to attend the Latin American Conference in Atlanta, Georgia that is presented every year by Advanc-ED. During the conference, she will learn about the new requirements that have been put into place for SACS accreditation. She will also meet with Dr. Bill Scotti and Dr. Louis Fuccillo, who are strong U.S. State Department Office of Overseas Schools supporters of Discovery School. In Debbie’s absence, Gloria will be in charge of questions regarding the secondary school, and Cristiana will be in charge of questions regarding the elementary school.

EL TALLER DE MAESTROS: ESTA CERCA! La pre conferencia para el Taller de Maestros se llevará a cabo el jueves 17 de noviembre desde las 4:30 a las 7:30 p.m. (la asistencia es obligatoria). Las horas del taller son para el viernes 18 de noviembre de 8:00 a.m. a 5:00 p.m. y el sábado 19 de noviembre de 8:00 a.m. a 12:00 del mediodía. No habrá clases el día viernes 18 de noviembre.
ASAMBLEA DEL CONSEJO ESTUDIANTIL DE ALUMNOS DE PRIMARIA – El jueves 17de noviembre desde las 8:20 a las 8:50 a.m. habrá una Asamblea del Consejo Estudiantil donde los diferentes equipos presentarán su plan de acción si fueran elegidos Las elecciones del Consejo Estudiantil se llevarán a cabo el miércoles 23 de noviembre.
REPORTES DE MEDIO PERIODO – Es difícil de creer que la mitad del segundo bimestre es este jueves 17 de noviembre. Los reportes de este período se enviarán a casa el siguiente miércoles 23 de noviembre. Por favor asegúrese de revisar estos reportes con cuidado. Las calificaciones serán emitidas al final del segundo bimestre y no incluirán narrativas, por lo tanto es importante que dirija cualquier inquietud de padres o maestros en el tiempo adecuado. Nuestros maestros están siempre listos y dispuestos a reunirse con cualquier padre para hablar del desempeño de sus alumnos. VISITA DE LA EMBAJADORA DE E.E.U.U. Y LA UNIDAD DE SALUD – El martes 15 de noviembre a las 10:00 a.m., la nueva Embajadora de Estados Unidos, Lisa Kubiske y la nueva Enfermera de la Embajada Americana, Holly Paul, vendrán de visita a la Escuela Discovery. Esta es su primera oportunidad de experimentar el ambiente de la Discovery, y sabemos que disfrutarán observar lo que nuestros maestros y alumnos están haciendo en las aulas (y fuera de ellas).
VISITA A LA ESCUELA ALISON BIXBY STONE EN EL ZAMORANO – el día jueves 17 de noviembre, Debbie, Nina Glynn (Presidente de la junta) e Ivonne (Consejera) estarán de visita en la Escuela Alison Bixby Stone para abrir paso a la relación escuela a escuela con ellos.
COMPETENCIA ESPAÑOL ABSH – El Departamento de Español, las Administradoras de Área, y todos nuestros maestros están ocupados preparando el piloto para el nuevo programa que fue propuesto por la Escuela Discovery. En febrero, en conjunto con el Concurso de deletreo ABSH, seremos los anfitriones de la nueva competencia de Español ABSH. Esto requerirá del trabajo y la cooperación de la comunidad escolar, y sabemos que será una emocionante oportunidad de presentar otro evento excelente en Discovery.
INTERRUPCIONES TELEFONICAS EN LAS CLASES – Durante la reunión de Secundaria, los maestros hablaron de las numerosas interrupciones telefónicas que están ocurriendo durante las clases. Estamos analizando eso en un esfuerzo de eliminar o minimizar esas interrupciones. Por lo tanto, tome nota de lo siguiente:
Si un alumno olvida algo en la casa, él/ella puede ver en la oficina en cambio de clases si se lo han llevado. No haremos llamadas a las aulas para informarles a los alumnos que le trajeron algo. Los alumnos necesitan que se les recuerde que planifiquen con tiempo y traigan consigo sus materiales.
MIMIOS Y PROYECTORES – La escuela ha ordenado dos proyectores adicionales y dos pizarras inteligentes para las aulas. Estas llegarán pronto y estarán disponibles para todos los maestros que deseen usarlas en un sistema de apartados. Esto nos permitirá tener tres pizarras interactivas, y planeamos continuar agregando más para facilitar la enseñanza y aprendizaje.
ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES – El proporcionar un programa de Actividades Extracurriculares es un requisito de nuestra acreditación con SACS. Sin embargo, necesitamos inyectar nueva vida a nuestro programa y crear mayor interés en los alumnos.
Por lo tanto, Ivonne (Consejera) estará asumiendo la responsabilidad de revisar y darle una nueva cara a las actividades, trabajando juntamente con Víctor y Carol, para el segundo semestre. Ella guiará el proceso para identificar aquellas actividades que valoramos como escuela, que queremos hacer todo el semestre o todo el año, y que queremos hacer con excelencia. Ya se inició el proceso de encuestas a los alumnos para determinar que les gustaría que les ofreciéramos.
Si tiene alguna sugerencia para las actividades que son de su interés y sea sostenible para nuestros alumnos, favor comuníquese con Ivonne o alguna de nuestras Administradoras.
CONFERENCIA DE ADVANC-ED DE LATINO AMERICA – Debbie no estará desde el 19 de noviembre hasta el 3 de diciembre para asistir a la Conferencia de Latinoamericana en Atlanta, Georgia la cual es organizada cada año por Advanc-ED. Durante la conferencia, conocerá acerca de los nuevos requisitos que la acreditación de SACS solicita. También se reunirá con el Dr. Bill Scotti y el Dr. Louis Fuccillo, de la Oficina de Estado de EE.UU. Departamento de Escuelas en el Exterior quienes apoyan fuertemente a la Escuela Discovery. En la ausencia de Debbie, Gloria estará a cargo de las consultas concernientes al área de Secundaria, y Cristiana estará a cargo de las consultas concernientes al área de Primaria.
