WELCOME NEW STUDENTS- We want to welcome our new students to Discovery School! Maya has joined Ms. Vivian’s class in PreK, and her brother, Oliver, has joined Ms. Valencia’s class in Kinder. Marko has joined Ms. Magda’s class in first grade, and his brother, Nikolas, has joined the 7th grade. We are glad you are here, and we are sure that you will be very happy at Discovery School.
MAP TESTING – MAP testing will be held from Tuesday, January 17, through Tuesday, January 31, with make-up tests scheduled following that. For the first time, we will also administer the MAP testing for our Grade 1 students. Please plan on having your students attend school on the days of the test. If you anticipate they will be absent, contact your child’s teacher as soon as you can.
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY – This week, our students will be learning about the life and contributions of this great American and World leader. Please take the time to ask and discuss with your children about the relevance of his contributions to mankind. We remind you that next Monday’s holiday is in observance of his birth date and his contributions.
REPORT CARDS AND CONFERENCES: Report Cards will be issued on Friday, January 13. Conferences are on an ‘as-needed’ basis.

ABSH SPELLING BEE AND SPANISH CONTEST –Discovery School Teachers are working very hard to prepare to host the ABSH Spelling and Speech and Oratoria and Ortografia Competitions on February 11, 2012.
PARENT WORKSHOP: Our school counselor, Ms. Ivonne Casco, will be hosting a workshop for parents on Friday, January 20, at 1:30 p.m. Information will be posted on her blog.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEDNESDAY: Our third Staff Development Wednesday will take place on Wednesday, January 18. Please note that we are meeting on the 18th instead of the last Wednesday of the month. Mr. Jose Cordon will lead a training on how to use the Mimio technology—including time for teachers to ‘play’ with it. This is an early dismissal day (PM Schedule) for students.
DPTO FUN RUN: Our annual school Fun Run will take place on Saturday, January 28, beginning at 8:30 a.m. There will be the traditional run, games, and a complimentary pancake and fruit breakfast to follow. The pledge forms were sent before the Winter Holiday, however, if you would like an additional copy, please download it from the Area Administrators’ blogs. Encourage your family and friends to support our students and pledge for this fun event. We hope to see you at this fun Saturday morning.

BIENVENIDOS ALUMNOS NUEVOS – Queremos dar la bienvenida a nuestros alumnos a la Escuela Discovery! Maya se ha unido a la clase de Ms. Vivian en PK, y su hermano Oliver a la clase de Ms. Valencia en Kinder. Nos da mucho gusto tenerlos con nosotros, y estamos seguros que estarán muy felices en la Escuela Discovery.
EXAMENES MAP – Los exámenes MAP comenzarán desde el martes 17 de enero hasta el martes 31 de enero, con exámenes de reposición programados inmediatamente después. Por primera vez, también le haremos exámenes MAP a nuestros alumnos de 1er grado. Por favor planifique que sus hijos estén en la escuela para las fechas de los exámenes. Si sabe por anticipado que estarán ausentes, llame al maestro de su hijo tan pronto sea posible.

CONCURSO DE ORTOGRAFIA Y ESPAÑOL DEL ABSH – Los maestros de la Escuela Discovery están trabajando arduamente para preparar ser los anfitriones del Concurso de Spelling and Speech, y Oratoria y Ortografía del ABSH el 11 de febrero del 2012.
TALLER DE PADRES: Nuestra consejera estudiantil, Ms. Ivonne Casco, estará realizando un taller para padres el viernes 20 de enero a la 1:30 p.m. La información será publicada en su blog.
MIERCOLES DE DESARROLLO PROFESIONAL: Nuestro tercer miércoles de Desarrollo Profesional tendrá lugar el miércoles 18 de enero. Favor tome nota que nos reuniremos el día 18 en lugar del ultimo miércoles del mes. El Sr. José Cordón hará un entrenamiento para que los maestros puedan utilizar la tecnología Mimio -incluyendo tiempo para “jugar” con ella. Este día los alumnos saldrán temprano (horario PM).
CARRERA POR LA DIVERSION DEL DPTO: Nuestro evento escolar Fun Run será el sábado 28 de enero, comenzando a las 8:00 a.m. Se llevará a cabo la carrera tradicional, juegos y el desayuno complementario de pancakes y frutas que ofrece a continuación el DPTO. Los formularios de promesa fueron enviados antes del Feriado de Invierno, sin embargo, si le gustaría tener una copia adicional, puede descargarlo del blog del Administrador de Área. Anime a sus familiares y amigos a apoyar a nuestros alumnos y haga sus promesas para este evento tan divertido. Esperamos verlos ese divertido sábado en la mañana.
