CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS TO THE DPTO for hosting a wonderful Family Night last Friday, and to the teachers and parents who contributed to the event. All your efforts paid off as our school community had a delightful evening. We are very grateful for all the work the DPTO does on behalf of our students and teachers throughout the year.
CONGRATULATIONS, ALSO, TO THE CHOIR PARENTS for organizing BINGO-- It was the perfect ending to a great evening of family fun. From the number of people participating, it was a clear success!

DISCOVERY SCHOOL STUDENTS AT THE ABSH MODEL UNITED NATIONS – Last week Ms. Kristen Fink traveled to the Mazapan School in Ceiba with eight of our High School students to represent our school at the Annual Model United Nations (activity organized by the ABSH). The team was comprised of Santiago Agurcia and Catalina Rodriguez (11th grade). Sachi Kameishi. Krisna Mendoza, Ana Paulina Leal (10th grade) and Victoria Glynn, Catalina Correa and Katerina Fenn (9th grade). It was an extremely successful trip for our students, as many awards were given to our school. In addition to the awards listed below, the bill that was written by Catalina Rodriguez was recorded for airing on television at a later date.
The Bazooka Award (award for delegate with most founded attacks) was given to Santiago Agurcia, Security Council.
The Best Alliance distinction was given to Sachi Kameishi, UNHRC, Catalina Rodriguez, UNDOC and Santiago Agurcia, Security Council.
The Future UN Delegate recognitions were given to Victoria Glynn, UNICEF, Santiago Agurcia, Security Council and Sachi Kameshi, UNHRC.
The Encyclopedia Award (most background knowledge) was given to Victoria Glynn, UNICEF.
Honorable Mention Best Delegate was awarded to Sachi Kameishi, South Korea, UNHRC.
The Best Delegate Awards were issued to Santiago Agurcia, USA, Security Council and Victoria Glynn, United Kingdom, UNICEF. Discovery School was the only school participating that received two (2) Best Delegates Award!
Mrs. Fink, and the entire school, are EXCEPTIONALLY proud of all the students who participated in this simulation and we thank all of them (including Ms. Fink) for their hard work and dedication! This was a team event, and it took the entire group working together to accomplish and receive the distinction and awards. Congratulations to all! We are already planning to expand the Model United Nations for next year by competing in an international event in the United States.
PERSONAL HYGENE TALKS FOR THE ELEMENTARY - Ms. Ivonne has invited a guest speaker to talk to our elementary students about taking good care of your body, personal grooming and hygiene (4th and 5th graders will have the same topics plus some developmental changes that children their age will go through). We appreciate the elementary teachers’ accommodating their classroom schedules and bringing the students to the library on Tuesday, April 24 following the schedule below:

FROM THE CAFETERIA – ELEMENTARY PARENT LUNCHEON - Take Your Parents to Lunch Day Friday May 11th. Our school cafeteria will be hosting the second student and parent luncheon soon. Flyers with menus will be going home with your children this week. Please return with payment –exact change is preferred - by Monday 07th. The latest date the cafeteria will take orders is Wednesday 09th as the staff needs to prepare and have all ingredients on hand to ensure food for everyone. Students love to spend time with their parents at school, and this is a good opportunity to share your day with them. Parent involvement is proven to help children perform better academically and socially.

DRESS CODE FOR STUDENTS – Reminder to all parents and requesting support in this matter: All students should be appropriately dressed in a manner that promotes academic seriousness. The following is NOT ACCEPTABLE, among others (please refer to the Parent/Student Handbook, page 30 and 31):
- Drug, alcohol or tobacco related clothing, jewelry or paraphernalia
- Clothing promoting sex, racism, violence or profanity
- Clothing which, because of its briefness or tightness of fit is deemed distracting to the academic atmosphere
- Strapless tops or tops with either shoulder bare
- Shower-type flip-flops
- Shorts or skirts that are shorter than mid-thigh
The school stresses the avoidance of extremes and reserves the right to request a student to change into more appropriate attire or call home to acquire more suitable dress.

FELICITAMOS Y AGRADECEMOS AL DPTO por organizar una maravillosa Noche de Familia el viernes pasado, y también a los maestros y padres que contribuyeron a la realización del evento. Todos sus esfuerzos valieron la pena ya que nuestra comunidad escolar disfrutó mucho la velada. Estamos muy agradecidos por todo el trabajo que el DPTO realiza en nombre de nuestros alumnos y maestros durante todo el año.
FELICIDADES, TAMBIEN, A LOS PADRES DEL CORO por la organización del BINGO— Fue la manera perfecta de finalizar una velada de diversión familiar. De acuerdo al número de personas que participaron, vemos que fue claramente todo un éxito!
GRACIAS a toda nuestra comunidad por el apoyo a los esfuerzos en la recolección de fondos de estos dos grupos.
ALUMNOS DE LA ESCUELA DISCOVERY EN EL SIMULACRO DE LAS NACIONES UNIDAS ABSH - la semana pasada Ms. Kristen Fink viajo a la Escuela Mazapán en La Ceiba, con ocho de nuestros alumnos de secundaria para representar nuestra escuela en el Simulacro Anual de las Naciones Unidas (actividad organizada por el ABSH). El equipo estaba formado por Santiago Agurcia y Catalina Rodríguez (11avo grado). Sachi Kameishi, Krisna Mendoza, Ana Paulina Leal (10mo grado) y Victoria Glynn, Catalina Correa y Katerina Fenn (9no grado). El viaje fue extremadamente exitoso para nuestros alumnos, ya que se concedieron muchos premios a nuestra escuela. Adicionalmente a los premios detallados a continuación, la ley que fue escrita por Catalina Rodríguez fue grabada para ser televisada próximamente.

Al Futuro Delegado de UN reconocimientos otorgados a Victoria Glynn, UNICEF, Santiago Agurcia, Consejero de Seguridad y Sachi Kameishi, UNHRC.
El Premio Enciclopedia (mayor conocimiento general) fue otorgado a Victoria Glynn, UNICEF.
Mención Honorable al Mejor Delegado fue otorgado a Sachi Kameishi, Corea del Sur, UNHRC.
Premios a la Mejor Delegación fueron otorgados a Santiago Agurcia, USA, Consejero de Seguridad y Victoria Glynn, Inglaterra, UNICEF. La Escuela Discovery fue la única escuela participante que recibió dos (2) Premios a Mejor Delegación!
Mrs. Fink, y toda la escuela, nos sentimos EXCEPCIONALMENTE orgullosos de todos los alumnos que participaron en este simulacro y les agradecemos (incluyendo a Ms. Fink) por su gran trabajo y dedicación! Este fue un evento de equipo, y tomo trabajo en equipo de todo el grupo para lograr y recibir las distinciones y premios.
Felicidades a todos! Ya estamos planeando expandir el Modelo de Naciones Unidas para el próximo año, y competir en eventos internacionales en los Estados Unidos.
CHARLAS DE HIGIENE PERSONALPARA PRIMARIA – Ms. Ivonne tiene un invitado especial para hablar con nuestros alumnos de primaria acerca del buen cuidado del cuerpo, aseo e higiene personal (a 4to y 5to grado se les impartirán los mismos temas y además algunos de cambios en el desarrollo que atraviesan los niños de esa edad). Apreciaremos que los maestros de primaria acomoden su horario de clases y lleven a sus alumnos a la Biblioteca el martes 24 de abril siguiendo el horario descrito a continuación:

DESDE LA CAFETERIA – ALMUERZO CON PADRES DE PRIMARIA - Día de Lleva a tus padres a almorzar el viernes 11 de mayo. La cafetería de nuestra escuela estará organizando el segundo almuerzo de alumnos con padres pronto. Hojas volantes serán enviadas a casa con sus hijos esta semana. Por favor envíelas de regreso junto al pago – el cambio exacto preferiblemente- antes del lunes 7. El último día que la cafetería tomará órdenes es el miércoles 9 ya que el personal necesita prepararse con todos los ingredientes a mano para asegurarnos que haya comida para todos. A los alumnos les encanta pasar tiempo con sus padres en la escuela, y esta es una buena oportunidad para compartir su día con ellos. Esta comprobado que al involucrarse los padres se ayuda a los niños a tener un mejor rendimiento académico y social.

CODIGO DE VESTIR - Recordatorio a todos los padres y solicitud de ayuda en esto: Todos los alumnos deben vestir de manera apropiada de modo que promueva la seriedad académica. Los siguientes NO SON ACEPTABLES, entre otros (por favor lea el Manual de Padres/Maestros, pagina 30 y 31):
- Ropa, joyería o pertenencias con temas de drogas, alcohol y tabaco.
- Vestimenta que promueva el sexo, racismo, violencia o profanidad.
- Vestimenta que, por ser muy corta o pegada sea considerada distracción a la atmosfera académica.

La escuela hace hincapié en evitar los extremos y reserva el derecho de solicitar a un alumno para cambiar su atuendo a más apropiado o "llamar a su casa" para adquirir una vestimenta más adecuada.
