DISCOVERY SCHOOL MONDAY MEMO FOR PARENTS 10/8/12

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DISCOVERY SCHOOL CHOIR:  Our Choir was invited to perform as special guests for the 25th Anniversary of the Festival of Children’s Voices of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Once again they have made us proud. Thanks to Ms. Pamela and Ms. Norma for preparing the students and to our Choir parents for their constant support.

MAP TESTS - Make up tests will be done on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (the testing window closes on October 10).  If you child has missed a day of school in the past three weeks  and missed on taking a MAP assessment please make sure they are in school to take the make up test this week. MAP reports will be distributed to parents at the Student Led Conferences on Friday, October 26.

BOARD TRAINING AND GOAL SETTING – The Discovery School Board of Directors will participate in a Board Training and Goal-Setting session with Ms. Giles on Monday, October 8, from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the school’s Conference Room. Many thanks to these dedicated parents who commit many hours during the school year to provide the governance and oversight that keeps Discovery strong. Members of this year’s Board are Amanda Miller, Arnoldo Palma, Chris Mueller, Evy Williams, Mona Kuntz, Robert Myers, Wendolyn Vasquez, and Wendy Willemsen.

PSAT EXAM – Fifteen students will take the PSAT exam on Wednesday, October 17 from 8:00 – 12:00. This is excellent preparation for the SAT’s that will be taken at a later time.

ELEMENTARY PARENT LUNCHEON: Our School Cafeteria will be hosting their first Parent Luncheon for Elementary parents and students on Friday, October 19. Pre-order forms with the menu and prices will be distributed on Monday. Please support our Cafeteria as they provide this opportunity for parents and students to share a delicious lunch at school.

MEDICAL BRIGADES - Cape Cares partners with Discovery to take medical assistance to rural communities near Tegucigalpa. We need parent and student volunteers who could translate for doctors and help with the paper work done at the pre-clinic. Please email Mrs, Ivonne Casco if you are interested and want more information. Brigades will take place in San Marcos October 21 to 28; and Los Encinitos November 10 to 17.

DPTO MEETINGS –  The DPTO continue to meet on Wednesday at the cafeteria to organize our UN Day celebration that will take place in October. Please feel free to join this meetings that take place from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m.  

SENIORS 2013 U.N. DAY CASH RAFFLE –  To raise funds for their community work, our Seniors are selling tickets for a CASH price raffle that will be held during our U.N. Day Celebration. The first prize is L5,000.00, the second prize is L3,000 and the third prize is L2,000.00 Please support our Seniors by purchasing tickets (only L50 a piece).

TARDY PROCEDURES FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS – The Administration and secondary teachers are concerned about the number of students who are arriving to school late for classes in the morning. This affects not only the student who is late, but also the entire class if information needs to be repeated. It is distracting to the class, and it prevents the student who is late from participating in essential review of material  and presentation of new information that occurs in the beginning of the class period. A clearly-stated procedure for dealing with tardies will be set home this week, and will be in effect starting with the second quarter on October 16. FELICIDADES AL CORO DE LA ESCUELA DISCOVERY: Nuestro Coro fue invitado a presentarse como invitado especial para el 25 Aniversario del Festival de Voces Infantiles de la Iglesia Adventista del Séptimo Día. Una vez más nos hacen sentirnos muy orgullosos. Agradecemos a Ms. Pamela y Ms. Norma por preparar a los alumnos, y a los padres del Coro por su constante apoyo.

EXÁMENES MAP – Los exámenes de reposición se realizarán el lunes, martes y miércoles (el tiempo para finalizar los exámenes concluye el 10 de octubre). Si su hijo ha faltado a la escuela en las últimas tres semanas y ha perdido alguna evaluación MAP por favor asegúrese que se presenten a la escuela para tomar el examen de reposición esta semana. Los reportes de MAP serán entregados a los padres en las conferencias dirigidas por los alumnos el día viernes 26 de octubre.

CAPACITACIÓN DE LA JUNTA DIRECTIVA Y ESTABLECIMIENTO DE METAS – La Junta Directiva de la Escuela Discovery participará en una reunión de capacitación y establecimiento de metas con Ms. Giles el día lunes 8 de octubre, desde la 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. en el salón de conferencias de la escuela. Agradecemos mucho a estos padres dedicados quienes brindan muchas horas durante el año escolar para dar la gobernabilidad y manejo que mantiene fuerte a Discovery. EXAMEN PSAT -  Quince alumnos estarán tomando el examen PSAT el día miércoles 17 de octubre de 8:00 – 12:00 m. Esta es una preparación excelente para los exámenes SATs que deberán realizar próximamente.

ALMUERZO DE PADRES DE PRIMARIA – La Cafeteria de la escuela estará organizando su primer Almuerzo para padres y alumnos de Primaria el día viernes 19 de octubre. Los formularios para pedidos con el menú y precios se enviarán el lunes. Favor apoye nuestra Cafetería ya que ellos nos dan la oportunidad para que padres y alumnos compartan un delicioso almuerzo en la escuela.

BRIGADAS MÉDICAS – Cape Cares se asocia con Discovery para proporcionar asistencia médica a las comunidades rurales cerca de Tegucigalpa. Necesitamos padres y alumnos voluntarios que puedan traducir para los médicos y ayudar con el papeleo que se hace en la pre clínica. Favor comuníquese con Ms. Ivonne Casco si está interesado y desea mayor información. Las brigadas se realizarán en San Marcos del 21 al 28 de octubre; y en Los Encinitos del 10 al 17 de noviembre.

REUNIONES DEL DPTO – El DPTO está trabajando en la organización de la celebración del Día de las Naciones Unidas que se realizará el 25 de octubre. Se están reuniendo cada miércoles en la Cafetería de la escuela, desde las 7:45 a las 8:15 a.m. Por favor acompáñelos si está disponible a esas horas.

RIFA DE EFECTIVO DE SENIORS 2013, EN DÍA DE N.U. -  Para recaudar fondos para su Trabajo Educativo Social, los Seniors están vendiendo boletos para una rifa de premios en EFECTIVO que será realizada durante la celebración del Día de las Naciones Unidas. El primer premio es de L5,000.00, el segundo premio es de L3,000.00 y el tercer premio es de L2,000.00. Favor apoye a nuestro Seniors comprando su boleto (a solamente L50 cada uno).

PROCEDIMIENTO DE LLEGADAS TARDE PARA LOS ALUMNOS DE SECUNDARIA – La administración y los maestros de secundaria están preocupados por el número  de alumnos que están llegando tarde a la escuela y sus clases de la mañana respectivamente. Esto afecta no solamente al alumno(a) que llega tarde, sino que también a toda la clase si la información tiene que ser repetida. Distrae a la clase y evita que el alumno que llega tarde participe en el repaso esencial del material y la introducción de la nueva información que se realiza al inicio de la clase. Un procedimiento claramente establecido para tratar con las llegadas tardes será enviado a casa esta semana, y tendrá efecto comenzando el segundo trimestre el 16 de octubre. Cuando reciba los lineamientos, si tiene alguna pregunta, favor comuníquese con Ms. Gloria Palacios.
