FLU UPDATE – We appreciate our teachers’ and parents’ support in handling
the cases of flu we have had in school. We administered 210 flu vaccines on Friday. If you were not able to get your vaccination, please check with
your doctor and see if s/he advises you and your family to get one and find out
where it is available. We are hopeful that this will help slow the spread of
the disease. Grades 11 and 12 will return to school from being quarantined on
Tuesday, October 29, and Grades 1 and 2 will return to school on Wednesday,
October 30. We ask parents to be vigilant of flu-like symptoms, keep your child
home if s/he displays any of those symptoms, and contact the school if your
child has tested postive for the H1N1 virus. We are aware that there are also
other strains of the flu showing up this flu season. We will continue to
monitor this situation closely, and keep our teachers and parents informed via
email.
REPORT CARDS AND CONFERENCES– If you did not meet with your child’s teachers last
Friday, please be proactive in contacting them and setting up an appointment to
reschedule your child’s conference. Conferences for the first quarter
are mandatory at Discovery School.
U.N. DAY CELEBRATION- The DPTO is organizing our annual U.N. Day celebration for this
Wednesday, October 30. We hope our parents can join us this day. The
celebration will begin at 9:00 a.m. to allow parents time to set up their
tables. Students will be dismissed from school at 11:45 a.m. The DPTO has
planned an International Fashion Show for the UN Day, and they need your help!

REMINDER TO MARK YOUR CALENDARS - There will be no school for students on Friday, November 8 as stated
in the school calendar. This time will be used for professional development of
the staff in implementing new strategies to support the Common Core Curriculum.
For Early Childhood and Elementary:
BOOK CHARACTER DAY – The Early Childhood
and Elementary students are asked to come dressed as their favorite book
character on Thursday, October 31. Grades 3, 4 and 5 will be hosting a live wax
museum of book characters during the second period.
CHILDREN’S OPERA AT THE MANUEL BONILLA – Grades Kindergarten through Fifth have been invited to the presentation
of LA TORTUGA YLA MAGICA CANCION
For Secondary:
COMMUNITY SERVICE CLUB- We will have a meeting on Tuesday, October
29, at lunchtime in Mrs. Christina Agurcia's room. We will discuss our visit to Nuestros
Pequenos Hermanos on Sunday, November 3rd and preparation for the annual
Christmas party. All secondary students
are invited to attend.
OPERATION WALLACEA- Operation Wallacea
is an international organization that joins high school and university students
with field research scientists to aid in gathering data for biodiversity
conservation, here in Honduras and in other locations throughout the
world. Representatives from this
organization will present information on Tuesday, October 29, at 3:15 PM in the
Discovery School library. Students from Grades
8-12 and their parents are invited to attend and learn about this amazing
opportunity.
DONATIONS NEEDED: Don’t forget to send in cereal boxes for “Ya Tengo Donde Escribir” between now and November 20. The
grade that brought the most boxes will be awarded a pizza party or ice cream
party! Please help us help those in need!

ACTUALIZACION SOBRE
LA GRIPE – Agradecemos a los maestros y padres por el apoyo en el manejo de los
casos de gripe que hemos tenido en la escuela. El viernes se
administraron 210 vacunas para la gripe. Si no pudo recibir su vacuna por favor
consulte con su médico para ver si él/ella aconseja que usted y su familia la
reciban y les averigüe adonde está disponible. Esperamos que esto ayude a que
la enfermedad se propague menos. Los alumnos de 11 y 12 grados regresarán a
clases después de su cuarentena el día martes 29 de octubre, y los alumnos de
los grados 1 y 2 regresarán a clases el día miércoles 30 de octubre. Les
solicitamos a los padres que estén pendientes de síntomas parecidos a los de la
gripe, que deje a su hijo(a) en casa si presenta alguno de estos síntomas, y se
comunique con la escuela si su hijo(a) resulta positivo con el virus H1N1.
Estamos conscientes que también hay otras manifestaciones de la gripe que se
están presentando en esta temporada. Continuaremos monitoreando la situación de
cerca, y mantendremos a nuestros maestros y padres informados por correo
electrónico.
CALIFICACIONES Y CONFERENCIAS – Si no se
reunió con los maestros de su hijo(a) el viernes pasado, por favor sea
proactivo y comuníquese con ellos para concertar una cita y reprogramar la
conferencia de su hijo(a). Las conferencias son obligatorias en el
primer trimestre en la Escuela Discovery.
CELEBRACIÓN DE
NACIONES UNIDAS- El
DPTO está organizando nuestra Celebración Anual de las Naciones Unidas para
este miércoles 30 de octubre. Esperamos que los padres nos puedan acompañar. La
celebración dará inicio a las 9:00 a.m. para permitirles a los padres que
tengan tiempo para arreglar sus mesas. Los alumnos saldrán de la escuela a las
11:45 a.m. El DPTO ha planificado un Desfile de Modas Internacional para el Día
de Naciones Unidas, y necesitan su ayuda! Si desea participar modelando o prestando

LIBRO – Se
les ha pedido a los alumnos de Pre-escolar y Primaria venir vestidos como su
personaje de libro preferido el día jueves 31 de octubre. Los alumnos de 3, 4 y
5 estarán presentando un museo de cera en vivo de personajes de libro durante
el segundo periodo.
OPERA DE NIÑOS EN EL
MANUEL BONILLA – Los
niños de Kínder hasta Quinto grado han sido invitados a la presentación de LA
TORTUA Y LA MAGICA CANCION UWUNGELEMA, la primera ópera para niños
presentada en Honduras. Esta ópera fue escrita y dirigida por el Maestro Jorge Mejia. Los alumnos asistirán
a la presentación el miércoles 6 de noviembre. Saldremos de la escuela a las 8:00
a.m. y regresaremos a las 11:00 a.m. La tarifa por la entrada y transporte es
de L180.00, el cual debe ser enviado
a la escuela a mas tardar el viernes 1 de noviembre. Para este paseo, cada
grado debe llevar un padre acompañante
por cada 4 alumnos. Si le interesa por favor comuníquese con el maestro
de su hijo(a).

CLUB DE SERVICIO
COMUNITARIO – Tendremos
una reunión el día martes 29 de octubre, durante el almuerzo en el aula de Ms.
Christina Agurcia. Hablaremos de nuestra visita a Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos el
domingo 3 de noviembre y la preparación de la fiesta anual de Navidad. Todos
los alumnos de secundaria están invitados a asistir.
OPERACIÓN WALLACEA- Operación Wallacea es
una organización internacional que une alumnos de secundaria y universitarios
con científicos de investigación de campo para ayudar a la recolección de
información de la conservación de la biodiversidad aquí en Honduras y en otros
lugares alrededor del mundo. Los representantes de esta organización
presentarán la información el martes 29 de octubre, a las 3:15 p.m. en la
biblioteca de la Escuela Discovery. Los alumnos de 8-12 grados y sus padres
están invitados a asistir y conocer acerca de esta increíble oportunidad.

NECESITAN DONACIONES: No olvide enviar las cajas de cereal
para “Ya Tengo Donde Escribir” desde ahora hasta el 20 de noviembre. El grado
que haya recolectado mas cajas de cereal será recompensado con una fiesta de
