BUCKET CHALLENGE - You may have heard that a wave of joyful
enthusiasm has poured over the school as students, teachers, and staff members
have accepted the “ice bucket challenge.”
This first phase of charitable commitment to the struggle against
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) will shortly come to an end. Teachers are currently looking at creative alternatives
to involve younger students in the community service commitment and preserve
their enthusiasm. In order to avoid possible injury to any child (if a heavy
bucket should fall) and the inconvenience of a school full of wet clothes on
younger children, we are changing direction just a bit.
We would like to
emphasize that we will seek to maintain the commitment to community service in
a spirit of joy and good will. All
donations received for the struggle against ALS should be directed to Ms. Cecilia
Vallecillo, Elementary Spanish Social Studies. Thanks to all the students who got
involved. It was fun!

OF DIRECTOR NOTES - In the first regular meeting of the
Discovery Board of Directors, the following officers were nominated and elected
in accordance with the by-laws of the school.

Committee
Membership. Three standing committees,
as provided for in the by-laws, were appointed:
--Finance
Committee: Headed by Mr. Mueller, with
Colin Baril
--Strategic
Planning: Headed by Ms. Manana Watson,
with Ms. Adam-Glynn, Ms. Williams, and Mr. Atuán.
--Policy
Committee: Headed by Dr. Ketterer, with
Mr. Matamoros, Ms. Adam-Glynn, and Ms. Callejas.
--An Ad Hoc
Technology committee was authorized by the Board, with Mr. Matamoros to
chair. This committee will involve
members of the community in questions of technology training and
infrastructural development.
All parents who
are interested in joining a committee, and are able to dedicate the time
necessary, are welcome to contact Dr. Ketterer, who will assist them in joining
the committee.
The Board will
meet on the second Thursday of each month at 17:30 hrs. Any parent who wishes to suggest an item for
Board consideration should contact Ms. Ninoska Adam-Glynn or Dr. Ketterer 2
full days before the scheduled board meeting. Finally, you are cordially
reminded to attend the Fall General Assembly on Saturday, September 27, at 9:00
a.m. We remind you of the legal
requirement to achieve a quorum for this important meeting.

SCHOOL VISITOR - We are cordially inviting all DS parents to come
and meet Mr. Mike Sexton, representative of the Overseas Schools Project in the
Department of State, which provides support for schools attended by children of
US Embassy personnel. Mr. Sexton is currently Vice President for Enrollment
Management at Santa Clara University and has been in college admissions for
thirty-six years. He would love to meet you over coffee this coming Thursday,
Aug. 28. At 8:00 a.m., in the Library. Hope to see you there!

ENVIRONMENTAL
CLASS PROJECT - Next week (August 25th-29th) the 10th
graders will carry out their “Reducing our Waste Line” week. This week is dedicated to making our students
think about producing less waste, through the 4 R’s (recycle, reuse, reduce,
and rethink). The 10th grade
environmental students are preparing a few activities for this week: 1) classroom chats and 2) Ecofriendly Lunch
Day.
The classroom chats will include age-appropriate
activities that will promote waste reduction.
These will take place on Monday, August 25th and Tuesday, August 26th,
from 10:25-10:45 a.m.

To help our
students learn more about waste free lunches and overall waste reduction,
including the recycling program at school, our 10th grade environmental science
students will visit the elementary classes with fun lesson and activities on
Monday, August 25th and Tuesday, August 26th.
EARLY DISMISSAL
ON WEDNESDAY – We want to remind our parents and students that
this Wednesday, August 27 is the first professional development day for
teachers this school year. On this Wednesday (as with every last Wednesday of
each month) the students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m. so our teachers can
work on trainings and curriculum work. Please make sure you make the necessary
arrangements for this early dismissal.
We will follow AM Schedule.
For Middle and High School only:
MATH OLYMPICS CLUB - First
informative meeting this Monday, August 25 during lunch. All students
interested from grades 7 - 12 are invited. Come to Room # 6.

RETO DE LA CUBETA CON HIELO - Puede que haya escuchado acerca de
una ola de entusiasmo y alegría que se ha derramado sobre la escuela ya que los
alumnos, maestros y miembros del personal han aceptado “el reto de la cubeta
con hielo”. Esta es la primera fase del compromiso para apoyar la lucha contra la
Esclerosis Lateral Amiotrófica (ALS
siglas en ingles), la cual pronto concluirá. En estos momentos los maestros
están buscando alternativas creativas para involucrar a los alumnos más jóvenes
en el compromiso de servicio comunitario manteniendo su entusiasmo. Para evitar
posibles heridas a cualquier niño (si una cubeta pesada se cayera) además de la
inconveniencia de llenar la escuela con ropa mojada de los niños, estamos
cambiando la dinámica un poco.
Queremos enfatizar que
buscaremos mantener el compromiso de servicio en la comunidad con espíritu de
felicidad y buena voluntad. Todas las donaciones que se reciban para la lucha
contra el ALS deben ser dirigidas a Ms. Cecilia Vallecillo, Maestra de Estudios
Sociales en Español de primaria. Agradecemos a todos los alumnos que se han
involucrado. Ha sido muy divertido!
NOTAS DE LA REUNION DE LA JUNTA DIRECTIVA - En la
primera reunión regular de la Junta Directiva de Discovery, se nominaron y
fueron electos los siguientes oficiales, de acuerdo con los estatutos de la
escuela.

establecieron tres comités activos, de acuerdo a los estatutos:
--Comité de Finanzas:

--Comité de Políticas:
Dirigido por Mr. Ketterer, junto a Mr. Matamoros, Ms. Adam-Glynn, y Ms.

--Comité Ad Hoc de Tecnología, autorizado por la
Junta, con Mr. Matamoros como presidente. Este comité involucrará miembros de
la comunidad con preguntas de capacitación en tecnología y desarrollo
infraestructural.
Todos los padres que estén
interesados en unirse a un comité, y pueden dedicar el tiempo necesario, se les
invita a comunicarse con Dr. Ketterer, quien les asistirá para que formen parte
del comité.
La Junta se reunirá el
segundo jueves de cada mes a las 5:30 p.m. Cualquier padre de familia que desee
sugerir algún asunto para la consideración de la Junta debe comunicarse con Ms.
Ninoska Adam-Glynn o al Dr. Ketterer dos días antes de la reunión programada.
Finalmente, cordialmente se le recuerda asistir a la Asamblea General de Otoño
el día sábado 27 de septiembre a las 9:00 a.m. Les recordamos sobre el
requerimiento legal para lograr quórum en esta importante reunión.
DE LA OFICINA DE CONSEJERIA:
- VISITA ESPECIAL A LA ESCUELA – Cordialmente invitamos a todos los padres de
la Escuela Discovery a venir y conocer al Sr. Mike Sexton, representante
del Proyecto de Escuelas Extranjeras en el Departamento de Estado, quienes
proporcionan apoyo a las escuelas a las que asisten niños del personal de
la Embajada Americana. Mr. Sexton es actualmente el Vice- Presidente de
Admisiones en la Universidad de Santa Clara y ha sido parte de este
proceso de admisiones por 36 años. Sería un gusto para él poder conocerlos
y compartir un café el día jueves, 28 de agosto a las 8:00 a.m. en la
biblioteca de la escuela. Esperamos verlos ese
día!

PROYECTO DE CLASE DE CIENCIAS AMBIENTALES – La próxima semana (del 25 al 29 de agosto) los
grados de 10mo llevarán a cabo su semana “Reduciendo nuestra línea de
desperdicios”. Esta semana estará dedicada a enseñar a nuestros alumnos acerca
de minimizar la producción de desperdicios, por medio de las 4 R´s (reciclar, rehusar,
reducir, y reconsiderar). Los alumnos de Ambientales de 10mo grado están
preparando algunas actividades para esta semana: 1) charlas en las aulas y 2) Día
de Almuerzo Eco Amigable.
Las charlas de las clases
incluirán actividades apropiadas a la edad que promocionan la reducción de
desperdicios. Esto se llevará a cabo el día lunes 25 y martes 26 de agosto, de
las 10:25 – 10:45 a.m.

Para ayudar a nuestros alumnos aprender más acerca de almuerzos sin
desperdicios y de la reducción de basura en general, incluyendo el programa de
reciclaje en la escuela, nuestros alumnos de la clase de ciencias ambientales
visitarán los grados de primaria con lecciones y actividades divertidas el
lunes 25 y martes 26 de agosto.
SALIDA TEMPRANA EL MIERCOLES – Queremos recordarles a los padres y alumnos que este
miércoles 27 de agosto, es la primera reunión de este año escolar de desarrollo
profesional para los maestros. Este miércoles (así como cada último miércoles de
cada mes) los alumnos saldrán a las 11:45 a.m. para que nuestros maestros
puedan trabajar en las capacitaciones y desarrollo curricular. Por favor asegúrense
de hacer los arreglos necesarios para esta salida. Tendremos horario AM.
Solamente para alumnos de secundaria:
CLUB DE OLIMPIADAS DE MATEMATICAS – La primera reunión informativa se realizará este
lunes 25 de agosto durante el almuerzo. Invitamos a todos los alumnos de los
