AN
IMPORTANT REMINDER (First Alert) – Please reserve
the date of May 16, at 9:00 a.m. for the Spring General Assembly. This is a critical assembly as the agenda
will include information updates on the year’s accomplishments, projected
school improvements for the coming year, and the approval of the calendar and
the SY 2015-2016 Budget. There will also
be a report on the re-accreditation process of the school. Please participate in the democratic process
of the Discovery School!
AdvancED/SACS
Accreditation – Students, parents and staff members
are required to fill out surveys during the month of March for review by the
Accreditation Committee. These surveys
are critically important to our continued recognition by the accrediting
institution. They will be filled out
online. We will provide Spanish language
translations of the questions to parents for their convenience, but the
questions must be answered online (where they will be seen in English). We will provide more information later on.
**REORGANIZATION
OF THE NURSERY AND PRE-KINDER PROGRAM
The
Discovery School Board of Directors, at its regularly scheduled February
meeting, approved the restructuring of the Nursery and Pre-Kinder programs of
the Early Childhood Division of the school.
Effective with the beginning of the Fall, 2015 school year, the
following actions have been approved:
1.
Parents will have a choice
between a half-day (8 a.m. to 11:00) and a full day Learning Care Center. Parents who opt for the ½ service will have
bus service. Parents who opt for the
full day Learning Care Center—8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.—will pay an adjusted fee,
and will also be offered bus service.
2.
The Board of Directors has postponed the capital fee for Nursery and Pre-K, which will now
be paid upon admission and entry to the Kinder year of the Early Childhood
Division, effective for all new students admitted to these grades. This waiver
is not retroactive.
3.
The curriculum of Nursery and
Pre-Kinder are being modified to include an emphasis on fine motor skills
development, to include Baby and Kids Yoga, movement, balance, and creative
dance. Trained staff will be provided.
Current Discovery School Parents will be
given first option on the choice of programs for their children in these years
(ie., full day or half day). Then,
registration will be opened to the public after a carefully prepared
promotional campaign. More information
will be available to you soon, and you may expect a full report at the May
Assembly.
DISCOVERY
SCHOOL AT THE ABSH SCIENCE FAIR - Three of our
students represented Discovery School at the ABSH Elementary School Science
Fair. This event was held in San Pedro Sula. As usual, our students did an
excellent job in representing our school. Congratulations to Natalia Sherman
(grade 4) and Maya Baril (grade 5) for obtaining "Honorable Mention",
and to Narayan Baril (grade 6) for obtaining "Outstanding" in the
competition. Thank you for your hard work, and special thanks to Ms. Amy Suhr
(grade 4) who traveled to San Pedro Sula to accompany our students and also be
a judge in this event.
NUESTROS
PEQUEÑOS HERMANOS (NPH) -- Due to a number of
circumstances, our friends at Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos have experienced an
increase of over 70 children, most of them under the age of 8 years old.
They are direly in need of clothing for these children, especially pajamas.
The critical age group is between 5 - 8 years old. We hope that
parents will consider donating used clothing, laundered, that might help
alleviate the stress the NPH is under with this immediate need. Please
launder the clothing and place it in a plastic bag. You, or your child,
may deliver it to Ms. Carolina at the reception. Thank you for your
generosity.
PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT WEDNESDAY – This Wednesday is an early
dismissal day for our students, who will be released at 11:45 a.m. and we will
follow P.M. schedule (periods 4-7).
LOST
AND FOUND – Please encourage your child to go the
office to check out the Lost and Found boxes. There are many items (sweaters,
Tupperware, water bottles) that need to be claimed by their owners as soon as
possible.
SECONDARY
STUCO MEETING – The Student Council will meet on
Wednesday, February 25 at 8:50 a.m. in the library.
EARLY
CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY READ-A-THON – To
commemorate Dr. Seuss’ birthday in March, the students from grades Kindergarten
through five will all be participating in the month-long Read-a-Thon. The
winner from each class will go out to lunch as a special treat from our DPTO!
Please encourage your students to read, read, read, and fill out the reading
logs that will be distributed next week.

institution. Her admission was accompanied by a significant academic
scholarship. We are proud of you Andrea!

Roches is Santiago’s first choice university.
*Sofía Williams
has been admitted to the University of Palermo in Argentina. Congratulations
Sofía!

UN RECORDATORIO MUY IMPORTANTE
(Primer aviso) – Favor aparten la
fecha del 16 de mayo a las 9:00 a.m. para la Asamblea General de primavera.
Esta es una asamblea crítica ya que la agenda incluirá informes sobre los
logros realizados durante el año, proyectos de mejoras en la escuela para el próximo
año, y la aprobación del calendario y presupuesto para el año escolar
2015-2016. También les daremos un reporte del proceso de re-acreditación. Favor
participen en los procesos democráticos de la Escuela Discovery!
Acreditación de AdvancED/SACS – Se requiere que alumnos, padres y miembros del
personal llenen encuestas durante el mes de marzo para la revisión del Comité de
Acreditación. Estas encuestas son muy importantes para continuar nuestro
reconocimiento por la institución acreditadora. Se llenaran en línea.
Proporcionaremos traducción al idioma español para los padres según su
conveniencia, pero las preguntas deben ser respondidas en línea (donde se verán
en ingles). Les estaremos enviando información más adelante.
**REOGANIZACION DEL PROGRAMA DE
NURSERY Y PRE-KINDER
La Junta Directiva de la
Escuela Discovery, en su reunión regular del mes de febrero, aprobó la reestructuración
del programa de Nursery y Pre-kínder para el área de pre-escolar de la escuela.
Efectivo a inicios del otoño, del año escolar 2015, las siguientes acciones han
sido aprobadas:
- Los padres tendrán la opción de los días medios (8:00 a.m. a 11:00 a.m.) y días completos en el Centro de Aprendizaje y Cuidados. Los padres que opten por el servicio de ½ día, tendrán servicio de bus. Los padres que opten por el día completo Centro de Aprendizaje y Cuidados—8:00 a.m. a 3:00 p.m.—pagarán una tarifa ajustada, y también se les ofrecerá el servicio de bus.
- La Junta Directiva ha pospuesto el Fondo de Inversión para Nursery y Pre-kínder, el cual será pagado cuando estén admitidos al año de Kínder, efectivo a partir del 1ero de agosto, 2015 para todos los alumnos admitidos a esos grados. Esta resolución no es retroactiva.
- El currículo para Nursery y Pre-kínder está siendo modificado para incluir un énfasis en las habilidades de desarrollo del motor fino, para incluir yoga para bebes y niños, movimiento, balance, y danza creativa. Se tendrá personal entrenado.
Los padres actuales de la Escuela Discovery tendrán la primera opción para
elegir el programa para sus hijos en estos años (ej. Día completo o medio día).
Luego se abrirá la matricula para el público después de preparar cuidadosamente
una campaña promocional. Les tendremos mayor
información pronto, y pueden esperar un reporte completo en la Asamblea de
mayo.
LA ESCUELA DISCOVERY EN LA FERIA DE
CIENCIAS ABSH – Tres de nuestros
alumnos representaron la escuela en la Féria de Ciencias de Primaria ABSH. Este
evento se realizó en San Pedro Sula. Como es usual, nuestros alumnos hicieron
un excelente trabajo representando la escuela. Felicitamos a Natalia Sherman
(4to grado) y Maya Baril (5to grado) por ganar “Mención Honorable”, y a Narayan
Baril (6to grado) por ganar “Excelencia” en la competencia. Les agradecemos su árduo
trabajo, especialmente agradecemos a Ms. Amy Suhr (4to grado) quien viajó a San
Pedro Sula a acompañar a nuestros alumnos y también a cumplir como juez en este
evento.
NUESTROS PEQUEÑOS HERMANOS (NPH) – Debido a diversas circunstancias, nuestros amigos
de Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos han experimentado un incremento de más de 70
niños, la mayoría de menos de 8 años de edad. Estos niños urgentemente necesitan
ropa, especialmente pijamas. El grupo crítico están en las edades de 5 -8 años.
Esperamos que los padres consideren la donación de ropa usada, debidamente
lavada, que pueda aliviar el estrés que tiene NPH por esta necesidad tan
inmediata. Favor lave la ropa y póngala en una bolsa de plástico. Usted o su
hijo, pueden traerla adonde Ms. Carolina en la recepción. Agradecemos su
generosidad.
MIERCOLES DE DESARROLLO PROFESIONAL – Este miércoles es un día de salida temprana para
nuestros alumnos, quienes serán despachados a las 11:45 a.m. y en el cual
seguiremos un horario P.M. (periodos del 4-7).
OBJETOS PERDIDOS Y ENCONTRADOS – Favor anime a su hijo a pasar por la recepción a
revisar las cajas de objetos “perdidos y encontrados”. Hay varios artículos (suéteres,
contenedores plásticos, botellas de agua) que necesitan ser reclamadas por sus
dueños tan pronto como sea posible.
REUNION DE STUCO DE SECUNDARIA – El Consejo Estudiantil se reunirá el día miércoles
25 de febrero a las 8:50 a.m. en la biblioteca.
MARATON DE LECTURA DE PRE-ESCOLAR Y
PRIMARIA – Para conmemorar el
cumpleaños del Dr. Seuss en marzo, los alumnos de los grados desde Kínder hasta
quinto estarán participando en un maratón mensual de lectura. El ganador de
cada clase tendrá un almuerzo especial que será proporcionado por el DPTO!
Favor anime a sus alumnos a leer, leer, leer, y llenar las hojas de registro de
lectura que serán entregadas la próxima semana.

*La Universidad de Oglethorpe en Georgia, admitió a Andrea Martínez a su
prestigiosa institución. Su admisión estaba acompañada de una beca académica
muy significativa. Estamos orgullosos de ti Andrea!
*Felicitamos a Santiago Robayo por su admisión a la Universidad Les Roches en
Suiza. Les Roches era la primera elección de universidad para Santiago.
*Sofía Williams ha sido admitida en la Universidad de Palermo en Argentina.
