UPDATE ON PAVING – It appears that on Monday, perhaps
Tuesday, the Paving Company will have finished the second traffic lane,
completing the first phase of the paving project. (The other two phases will be drainage on the
side towards the hill, and a sidewalk on the school side of the road.) Please do not drive on the new concrete lane
until it is officially opened. We will
need at least 14 days after the completion the lane for it to resist the weight
of our vehicles. I will keep you
notified. Think happy thoughts!
CLARIFICATION ON
UPCOMING HOLIDAYS – We want to let everyone know that Tuesday,
April 14 and Monday, April 20 will be regular school days. Our next holiday will be Friday, May 1, as per
our school calendar. We have already
used up our “extra instructional days” for the completion of the paving
project. We will not cancel school
another day this year except for what was previously in the calendar. As always, parents have the authority to
decide whether and when a child comes to school, but I encourage you all to
cooperate with the established instructional calendar.
INVITATION TO CURRENT PRE-SCHOOL PARENTS AND OTHER
INTERESTED PARTIES—
On Thursday,
April 16, parents are invited to the pre-school area at 08:00 a.m. for a
meeting to discuss the reorganization of the Early Childhood Program,
particularly the Maternal and Pre-Kinder grades (although changes to Kinder and
Grade 1 will also be discussed). If you
know anyone who might be interested in registering a child in these areas, even
if they are not currently part of our school community, please invite them to
join us. We will meet at the champa/shelter in front of the 1st
grade, and the school will be offering coffee, juice and cookies. Dr. Ketterer will provide a clear vision for
the Early Childhood Program that focuses on the integral development of your
children. Be sure to pick up a copy of the April “CROMOS” magazine, or the
April “ESTILO” to see our announcement about these changes.
MATH OLYMPICS – Last
week, a group of Middle and High School students traveled to La Ceiba to
participate in the ABSH Math Olympics. Our students did a fantastic job. The

WORLD OF 7 BILLION COMMENDATIONS – With the curricular leadership of Ms. Ashley Pileika, our secondary
students engaged in an international competition to define the problems of
population growth and its impact on quality of life, the economy, and
consequent social problems. Congratulations to the following teams for advancing to the
next round of the World of 7 Billion student video contest. Over the course of
several weeks, each team researched the connection between population growth
and education to create a short film proposing solutions for a sustainable
future. The following groups were recognized from a selection of over 850
student entries world-wide:

been chosen as a finalist in the World of 7 Billion contest among
the entries focusing on the global education challenge! This is a huge accomplishment and you

as finalists from the over 850 videos submitted this year. We have sent the final round of videos
to a panel of expert judges who are in the process of reviewing them. Winners

at this time your video has been selected to go on to the next round of judging
in the World of 7 Billion student
contest! We received over 800 submissions so this means your creation was among
the top 20%. Congratulations for making this far! The next step in the judging
process it to select the top 10 finalists from each of the three topic
categories and we will announce those finalists on Thursday, April 2nd.
We hope you enjoyed creating a video; we definitely had a blast viewing them

GO GREEN MONTH: Our students and parents are reminded to take green actions in their
classrooms and at home. Students will be
keeping a “GO GREEN” chart in their
classroom to record these actions.
Recycling is one of these actions, so students are encourage to bring
from home their cleaned and sorted paper, glass, aluminum, and plastic
containers for recycling. Also, our
students are encouraged to wear green each Friday this month.
GO GREEN CLASSROOM COMPETION FOR
EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY - The environmental
science students should have bought a poster chart to the classrooms. On this chart, students can keep track of
their "green" actions. They
may add a dot/stick/X to each box when they:
- Recycle aluminum, paper, or plastic in the appropriate bin
- Save energy by turning off the computers, lights, and fan when
leaving the classroom
- Conserve resources by using both sides of the paper
- Prevent waste production by using a reusable lunch box or thermos
SPANISH WEEK CELEBRATIONS –To commemorate the Day of the Spanish Language (April 23) the
Spanihs and Spanish Social Studies teachers will carry out several activities
with our students. Some of them are as follows:
*Inaguration Assembly– Monday, April 20 at 8:00 a.m. in the gym
(Early Childhood and Elementary students in charge)
*Closing Assembly - Thursday, April 23 at 2:07 p.m. in the gym
(Secondary students in charge)
*Classroom Activities related to the language, literature and music:

**SENIOR’S NEWS - Our
senior, Victoria Glynn, was admitted
to her first choice university, Berkeley
University of California. UC Berkeley was rated the No.3 global university
in the latest U.S. News & World
Report rankings. This admission is accompanied by a substantial financial
aid package. Victoria has also added Cornell
University to her list of university admissions. Congratulations Vicky on
your most recent achievements!
We are happy to
share with you the admission of Andrea
Martinez to the University of New
Mexico. With this admission, she was
also awarded the International Amigo
Freshman Scholarship which allows her to receive a significant tuition
waiver. Kudos to you, Andrea!
**CAREER
DAY - We will be having a Career Day here in school on April 17 from 8:30 a.m. to
10:30 a.m. We have invited several professionals from our Discovery School
community as well as from the outside, to come to share with our kids their
experience and thoughts about the career they chose to pursue. Grades 9th
through 12th are invited to attend. If
you wish to participate, you are very welcome to do so. We still have available
spaces for parent volunteers. Please

**INFORMATIVE TALK FOR PARENTS - Mrs. Anna Lucía
Acosta, specialist on family counseling, will be
giving a presentation to the parents on the topic “Educating today is different”. This event will take place on
Tuesday, April 28, at 1:00 p.m. in
our Library. You are all invited to come and acquire some insight on this
valuable education topic. Refreshments will be served.
BRICKS4KIDZ – Session 2 is this Friday, April 17. The sessions run from 3:15 to
4:15 and will be open for students in from kindergarten
to grade five. There are spaces still available! You can register on
Friday!
ACTUALIZACION EN LA PAVIMENTACION
- Parece ser que entre el lunes, o quizá
el martes, la compañía de pavimentación habrá terminado el segundo carril,
completando así la primera fase del proyecto. (Las otras dos fases serán el
drenaje en el lado de la colina, y la acera en el lado de la escuela.) Favor no
conduzca en el nuevo carril hasta que este oficialmente abierto. Necesitamos
por lo menos 14 días después de terminado para que resista el peso de nuestros vehículos.
Les mantendré notificados. Seamos pacientes y tranquilos!
ACLARACION ACERCA DE LOS PROXIMOS
FERIADOS – Deseamos notificar a
todos que el día martes 14 de abril y el lunes 20 de abril
tendremos clases regulares. Nuestro próximo
feriado será el día viernes 1 de mayo, de acuerdo a nuestro calendario escolar.
Ya hemos utilizado nuestros “días extras de instrucción” para completar el
proyecto de pavimentación. No cancelaremos clases otro día de este año,
solamente los días que ya están establecidos en el calendario previamente. Como
es habitual, los padres tienen la autoridad de decidir qué día asisten sus
hijos a la escuela, pero les animo a todos a cooperar con el calendario de instrucción
establecido.
INVITACION A LOS PADRES DE
PRE-ESCOLAR Y OTROS INTERESADOS – El día jueves 16 de abril, los padres del área de pre-escolar están
invitados a las 8:00 a.m. a una reunión para discutir la reorganización del
Programa de Pre-escolar, particularmente de los grados de Maternal y Pre-Kínder
(también se hablará de los cambios para Kínder y 1er grado). Si
conoce a alguien que pueda estar
interesado en matricular a un niño en estas áreas, aunque aún no sean parte de
nuestra comunidad escolar, favor invítelo a que nos acompañe. Nos reuniremos en
la champa enfrente de 1er grado, y les brindaremos café, jugo y galletas.

OLIMPIADAS DE MATEMÁTICAS - La semana
pasada un grupo de alumnos de secundaria viajaron a la ciudad de La Ceiba para
participar en las Olimpiadas de Matemáticas ABSH. Nuestros alumnos se
desempeñaron maravillosamente. Los resultados obtenidos por nuestra escuela son

FELICITACIONES – Con el liderazgo

involucraron en una competencia internacional para definir los problemas del

MES DEL MEDIO AMBIENTE – Les recordamos a nuestros
alumnos y padres a tomar acciones favorables para el medio ambiente en sus
aulas y en casa. Los alumnos mantendrán un cuadro “ECOLOGICO”
en sus aulas para registrar estas acciones. Reciclar es una de ellas, así que
animamos a los alumnos a traer de casa su papel limpio y clasificado, vidrio,
aluminio, y contenedores de plástico para el reciclaje. Además, animamos a
nuestros alumnos a vestir de verde cada viernes de este mes.
COMPETENCIA ECOLOGICA
POR GRADO, PARA PRE-ESCOLAR Y PRIMARIA – Los alumnos de Ciencias Ambientales debieron haber
llevado un cuadro en cartulina a cada aula. En este cuadro, los alumnos pueden
llevar el registro de sus acciones “ecológicas”. Pueden agregar un punto/calcomanía/X
en cada caja cuando hayan:

Reciclado
aluminio, papel, o plástico en el contenedor correspondiente.

Ahorrado energía
apagando la computadora, luces, y ventilador cuando salen del aula
-
Conservar
recursos usando ambos lados del papel
-
Prevenir
desperdicios usando loncheras y botellas reusables

el Día del Lenguaje Español (23 de abril) los maestros de Español y Estudios
Sociales llevarán a cabo varias actividades con nuestros alumnos. Algunas son

**Feria
Vocacional – Estaremos realizando una Feria
Vocacional en la escuela, el día 17 de abril desde las 8:30 a.m. a las
10:30 a.m. Hemos invitado a varios profesionales de la comunidad de la Escuela
Discovery así como de afuera, para que vengan y compartan con nuestros alumnos
sus experiencias e ideas acerca de la carrera profesional que eligieron seguir.
Los alumnos de 9no a 12vo están invitados a asistir. Si
desea participar, es bienvenido a hacerlo. Todavía tenemos espacios para

**Charla
informativa para padres – Mrs. Anna Lucía Acosta, especialista en consejería familiar, estará
dando una presentación a los padres en el tema “Educar hoy en día es diferente”. Este evento se realizará el jueves
28 de abril, a la 1:00 p.m. en nuestra biblioteca. Todos están invitados a venir
y conocer algunos puntos de vista en este importante tema de educación. Se
servirán bocadillos.
