Dear Parents of Discovery School,
At the present time, our plans are to continue with classes today and tomorrow (Wednesday). However, we want to assure you that we are alert to the developing situation and will be making and communicating decisions to you every day for the rest of the week at 1:30 p.m. Please watch for these communications in your email, DS Facebook, DS Twitter and DS Instagram.
The information that I have is that we can expect increased traffic in the late afternoons, so for this reason I am cancelling after-school activities for the entire week in progress.
To repeat: the decision about classes will be made and communicated to you on a day-by-day basis.

SONG FEST ON DECEMBER 8, 2017

As you all know, December is a very busy time of the year in the city. With all the road innovations going on, the traffic has become a major obstacle at all times, but especially after 4:00 pm, and even more so on Fridays. This is why the school has decided to change the time of our annual Song fest to the following:
- The presentations from Early Childhood (grades Nursery, Pre-Kinder, Kindergarten and Grade 1) will take place at 8:30 a.m.
- The presentations for Elementary and Secondary (grades 2-10) will take place at 1:30 p.m.
Both presentations will take place in our school gym. The DPTO will be selling food at both times, as will the Senior class be selling drinks and the NPH community service club be selling desserts.
We hope this decision will be well received by our parents, and count on your support to make this event the success it has always been.

Como todos saben, diciembre es uno de los meses más atareados del año en la ciudad. Con todas las innovaciones viales, el tráfico se ha convertido en un gran obstáculo en todo momento, pero especialmente después de las 4:00 p.m. y aún más los viernes. Esta es la razón por la cual la escuela ha decidido cambiar el horario de nuestra Fiesta Anual de la Canción a lo siguiente:
• Las presentaciones de Pre-escolar (grados Nursery, Pre Kinder, Kinder y 1er Grado) se llevarán a cabo a las 8:30 a.m.
• Las presentaciones para Primaria y Secundaria (grados 2do -10mo) tendrán lugar a la 1:30 p.m.
Ambas presentaciones tendrán lugar en el gimnasio de nuestra escuela. El DPTO estará vendiendo comida en ambas ocasiones, al igual que los estudiantes del Duodécimo grado venderán bebidas y el club de servicio comunitario de NPH venderán postres.
Esperamos que esta decisión sea bien recibida por nuestros padres de familia, y contar con su apoyo para que este evento sea el éxito que siempre ha tenido.

After enjoying the book Wonder for Read Aloud, and reading Out of Mind as a class novel, the fourth graders had the unique experience of interviewing via skype Ms. Georgette Pappas, a Special Education teacher. The conversation included topics like disabilities and inclusion. Thank you Ms. Karen and Ms. Dariela for making this happen, and thanks to Mr. Gregory Pappas for letting us contact your resourceful mother.

Después de disfrutar el libro “Wonder” en voz alta y leer “Out of Mind” como una novela en la clase, los alumnos de cuarto grado tuvieron la experiencia única de entrevistar por Skype a Mrs. Georgette Pappas, una maestra de Educación Especial. La conversación incluyó temas como discapacidad e inclusión. Gracias a Ms. Karen y a Ms. Dariela por hacer que esto suceda, y gracias a Mr. Gregory Pappas por permitirnos contactar a su ingeniosa madre.

This Thursday, November 30 the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh graders to a special matinee at Novacentro to watch the movie WONDER, based on the book by R.J. Palacio, which most of our students have read.
This book teaches so many valuable lessons which are aligned with our school’s philosophy (inclusion, tolerance, respect, standing up for what is right, anti bullying, and choosing kindness) the school believes these are important values for this group age. Because of this, the DPTO will be sponsoring part of the entrance fee for our students, fronting up L90 for each child. The school will be picking up the cost of L40 per child to cover the transportation costs. The students only need to bring L50 and the signed permission form. Please have your child wear a Discovery School polo or shirt if possible.

Este jueves 30 de noviembre estaremos llevando a los alumnos de cuarto, quinto, sexto y séptimo grado a un matinée especial en Novacentro para ver la película WONDER, basada en el libro escrito por R.J. Palacio, el cual ha sido leído por la mayoría de nuestros estudiantes. .
Este libro contiene valiosas lecciones que son muy congruentes con nuestra filosofía de escuela (la inclusión, la tolerancia, hacer lo correcto, decir no al bullying, y ser generoso con los demás) los cuales la escuela considera son valores importantes para los chicos de esta edad. Es por esto que el DPTO estará patrocinando parte de la entrada para nuestros estudiantes, pagando L90 por cada chico. La escuela cubrirá el costo de L40 por estudiante para el transporte. Los estudiantes solo deberán traer L50 con esta hoja de permiso. Si es posible, favor que su hijo (a) vista una polo o camisa de Discovery School.

Letters to the parents of the winners of the Spelling Bee, Ortografia, Speech and Oratoria competitions were sent out last week, We need confirmation from the parents of the attendance of these students to the ABSH event in La Ceiba on February 10, 2018. We ask parents to send these notes by Thursday, November 30.
Coaches will be assigned this week, and will be meeting with students once a week to work with them in preparation for the competitions.

Las cartas con los ganadores de los concursos de Spelling Bee, Ortografia, Speech y Oratoria se enviarán la semana pasada a los padres de familia. Necesitamos la confirmación de los padres de familia para la asistencia de estos estudiantes al evento ABSH en La Ceiba el 10 de febrero de 2018. Les solicitamos a los padres de familia enviar las cartas para el jueves 30 de noviembre.

ATTENDANCE - Traffic is difficult for everybody in the city. Please make the necessary arrangements so your child arrives to school before 7:55 am.

It is always the season to open our hearts and share with those around us that need it most. It has been a tradition at Discovery School for students to come together and contribute in assembling baskets of goods for our support personnel. We are asking for your cooperation in sending the following:

1 5-lb bag of beans
Kinder and 7th grade students
1 5 lb bag of rice
1st grade and 8th grade students
1 5-lb bag of sugar
2nd grade and 9th grade students
1 bottle or 2 bags of oil, 2 boxes of
margarine, OR 3 lbs of lard
3rd grade and 10th grade students

4th grade and 11th grade students
3 lbs of spaghetti (six packages)
1 bag of coffee
5th grade and 12th grade students
4 packages of tomato paste
Please feel free to send any additional goodies that you want to share with our devoted staff, such as canned goods, instant soups, cookies and crackers, or anything else that does not require refrigeration. Please send these items no later than Friday, December 1. Your cooperation will be deeply appreciated.
